I’ll raise you a Harvey Weinstein and a Russell Crowe.

I think Russell is probably pretty solid for a while, most likely an alcoholic but on cruise control with that, for the time being at least... Also has a lot of safety fat to prevent death.

Hudson County’s last Pearl Harbor survivor dies at age 100

Frank Wasniewski, Hudson County’s last link to one of the country’s most historic events, has died.

The World War II veteran passed away at the age of 100 at Christ Hospital on Jan. 21 after an illness.

Wasniewski told The Jersey Journal in 2009 that he had been stationed with the 98th Coast Artillery at Schofield Barracks, some 35 minutes north of Pearl Harbor, but that fateful day he had traveled to the Navy yard to pick up ammunition.

“They bombed for two hours,” the 90-year-old Jersey City resident said of the attack by the Japanese on Dec. 7, 1941, that claimed more than 2,400 lives and propelled the United States into World War II.

A member of “the greatest generation,” Wasniewski was drafted March 26, 1941 and had planned to serve a year. He was sent near Japan after the attack on Pearl Harbor and served four and a half years.

Wasniewski always considered himself lucky to come home alive. “It was brutal,” he said.

“Frank Wasniewski was a true American hero who stood tall in our country’s darkest hour, and stood by his fellow veterans here at home,” said County Executive Tom DeGise.

“We mourn Frank’s passing with his family, his friends, and his fellow vets, knowing that while our hearts are heavy now, they will be full of pride always that Frank Wasniewski called Hudson County his home.”

After the war, Wasniewski worked as a trailer-truck driver for the United State Postal Service for many years before retiring. He was a member of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association and a parishioner of St. Joseph R.C. Church.

Wasniewski annually attended the Hudson County Pearl Harbor remembrance ceremony, until he was too ill to make it. His niece, Geralyn Wasniewski Crawford, always seen carrying a large photo of her uncle, attended in his place the past few years.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Joseph R.C. Church on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. Interment with military honors to follow at Holy Name Cemetery in Jersey City.

In his community and his family he is a legend and that's what counts honestly.

Would be a bittersweet thing to see people with no idea of the sacrifice of his generation shit all over the ideals of the country you saved.

Star Trek and Soap Star Marj Dusay Passes Away at 83

Today, the Star Trek community is in mourning as a report has confirmed one of their own has passed away. A report has confirmed Marj Dusay has passed away at age 83. Fans will remember the actress for her prolific soap opera work as well as a stint on Star Trek: The Original Series.

The news came from Dusay's stepdaughter Elizabeth Perine. A post was shared on Facebook honoring the actress' life and legacy. "She was quite a woman and had quite a grand life," Perine shared. "She was deeply loved and will be deeply missed."

For Star Trek fans, they will remember Dusay from her work on a 1968 episode of Star Trek. "Spock's Brain" was the premiere of season three, and it featured Dusay playing a mysterious alien who secretly boarded the Enterprise. It was there she put the bridge crew asleep and examined each one before the gang awoke to Spock with his brain having been surgically removed.

As the episode goes, the Enterprise chases after the assailant and track her to a desolate planet. They learn the alien who stole Spock's brain is named Kara, and they demand it be returned. It turns out the alien comes from a race where the men and women live separately on a planet, and the latter are dependent on a brain to control their underground terrain. Luckily, Dr. McCoy is able to rig a way to save Spock while keeping the women safe, leaving Kirk and the crew to bid farewell to Kara.

Aside from Star Trek, Dusay has a long resume in television. She has starred in series like The Facts of Life, MacArthur, and more. She was well-known in the daytime television circuit after appearing on shows like Days of Our Lives, All My Children, and The Guiding Light.

I also heard that Merv Griffin was a bender.  Was that true?

Yes.

100% true.

Supposedly liked very young blonde boys that he referred to as "Twinkies."

IndyCar, NASCAR driver John Andretti dies after long, public battle with cancer

John Andretti, the versatile racer who waged a public battle with colon cancer, has died at age 56, Andretti Autosport announced Thursday. He was the nephew of Mario Andretti and son of Aldo.

“I’m an Andretti,” Andretti told IndyStar in May 2018. “I already beat the age I should have lived to. Growing up when you’re a little bit wild in a race car, I think everybody in our family’s always heard this: ‘You’re not going to live to see 20.’ Then it was, ‘You’re not going to live see 25,’ then, ’30.’

"But here I am. Still going. Our family’s already been through plenty of trials, and we’re still here. To get taken down by this, well, I’m going to go out giving it the strongest fight I can give it.”

Andretti was almost predestined for the cockpit of a racing machine, born while his father still was competing in various racing circuits.  But the fact that those close to him -- from family to racing peers and charity associates -- agreed that his most impactful achievements came off the racetrack paints the picture of the person Andretti was outside of a race car.

For a winner both in IndyCar and NASCAR during a career that spanned 24 years, that means something.

"He had a racing last name, but the reason he was so popular in this area was because people knew him, saw him around, knew he grew up here," said IMS president Doug Boles. "He was a great race car driver, but he was our great race car driver."

Boles remembers the the pride he felt for a Westside native when Andretti got his lone IndyCar win in the 1991 season-opener in Australia. Another special moments Boles recalls includes  John sharing a podium with his cousin, Michael Andretti, at the Milwaukee Mile later that year with a second-place finish.

"I just remember thinking, 'How cool is it to have John Andretti -- not Mario, not Michael, but John -- winning a CART race,'" Boles said. "You can't state how big that was."

Even after Andretti left IndyCar for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series after his 10th-place finish in the 1994 Indy 500, he never lost his Indy roots. After more than 10 years racing stock cars, he returned to IMS and IndyCar for five more Indy 500 starts.

By that point, he was more than a decade into what turned into his next major passion in life: the creation, development and growth of the Race for Riley, an annual go-kart race, progressive dinner and fundraiser for the Riley Children's Foundation that continues to pour money, time and effort into cancer research.

"He understood he was living the dream, getting to be a professional race car driver, and while he saw a lot of kids battling with diseases that kids shouldn't have to battle with, I think he felt compelled to use his position to help them feel better," Boles said.

Jason Mueller, the assistant vice president of communications for the Foundation, met Andretti in 2003 and said he was instantly wowed at his drive that powered the evolution of the annual event. In 23 years, the Race for Riley has raised $4.5 million for the Foundation -- in large part to Andretti's vision for others and having racing as a platform.

And while Andretti largely became the driving force behind the big-picture event, his impact reached down to the people affected by cancer, too. Mueller remembers that Andretti began a tradition of dressing in his fire suit and parading through the lobby to engage with any kid healthy enough to make the journey. And when they weren't healthy, Andretti would visit. His gentle heart, even for a few sacred moments, helped kids daydream their struggles away.

"Some kids would know exactly who he was," Mueller said. "and others would talk about their favorite driver, and John would share a laugh with those kids when they shared a name other than his.

"The way John lived his life is something that can impact all of us."

And when the dark days came for his own health, Andretti again recognized the power his status could have. As his uncle Mario explains, racing, in a way, gave way to the Stage 4 colon cancer he first was diagnosed with at age 54.

"This type of cancer, it's known as the silent killer, and it caught him when he was too busy in racing and chasing doing things he loved," the elder Andretti said. "He knew he made that mistake, but instantly, his mindset was 'Maybe, I can help prevent others from making the same mistake.'"

Soon after his diagnosis, Andretti held a news conference alongside Boles to bring light to a subject, colonoscopies, that he felt was only whispered about. On stage, Boles called his own doctor to schedule an appointment, and with the use of his social media campaign #CheckIt4Andretti, Andretti tore down the stigma of the disease.

"John wasn't doing it to benefit John," Boles said. "He knew, always knew what he was getting to do for a living was a blessing, a gift, and I think he felt an obligation to give back and use his platform to make a difference in people's lives. He just genuinely wanted to give back."
That November he announced his chemotherapy was over, and in March 2018 he tweeted his scans were clear.

But on March 29, 2019,  he took to Twitter again to say his six-month scans showed the cancer had returned and spread.

“Although this is a difficult time for us,” part of the tweet read, “your continued prayers & support are very important to us.”
The support of the racing community never wavered.

“I’m a really private person,” Andretti told Coping with Cancer magazine for its March/April 2018 issue, “and certainly nobody but my family would have known that I even had cancer if it weren’t for being pushed that I can make a difference by telling my story. That’s the only reason I went public. Because I really didn’t want people to know. I don’t want people to feel sorry for me.”

Andretti’s son, Jarett, told IndyStar in May 2017 that people had already started reaching out to him on social media to say his dad’s efforts led them to receive their own colonoscopies. A doctor, among many others, had reached out to Andretti that same month to tell him the same thing.

"The doctor told me the guy said, ‘The only reason I’m doing this is because of John,’” Andretti said.

And in his final days, as family made some of their last visits, there was Andretti, still the positive voice, lifting his family in dark times. Publicly, he was never going to submit to the disease, though privately Mario knows he was realistic.

But John Andretti always had an innate sense what an impact living as a beacon of light could be.
"Till the end, he was the one lifting all of us up," Mario said.

Added Boles: "There was never a time I would have bet against John Andretti. He was going to win and make a difference. That was the race car driver in him, and he was a race car driver all the way to the end."

Star Wars: Bossk Actor Alan Harris Passes Away at 81

Actor Alan Harris, known for playing a number of roles within the Star Wars saga, has passed away at the age of 81, as confirmed by Imperial Signings on Facebook. Harris had the rare distinction of appearing in all three original trilogy films as different characters, the most famous of which being Bossk in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back. Fans might not have seen Harris' face in the role, but it marked a rare on-screen appearance for the bounty hunter, who would go on to earn a passionate following from fans in subsequent years, in addition to the character being featured in a number of continued adventures.

Despite the actor not having as many recognizable on-screen performances, he was a regular of the convention circuit, often meeting with fans and sharing behind-the-scenes anecdotes of his time in the galaxy far, far away. Imperial Signings noted that he had struggled with health issues for a number of years.

Harris' first appearance in the franchise came in Star Wars: A New Hope, playing a member of Princess Leia's Rebel escort and also a mechanic in the war room. Additionally, he played a stormtrooper in the film. With The Empire Strikes Back, Harris played Bossk, as well as a Rebel trooper on Hoth and a member of the Bespin Wing Guard. He also served as a stormtrooper in Cloud City.

Some of the more interesting ways Harris contributed to The Empire Strikes Back happened behind the scenes, as his body was molded to create Han Solo frozen in carbonite, as well as having the Boba Fett costume molded to fit his body, though actor Jeremy Bulloch wore the costume in the actual film.

While Bossk did appear in Return of the Jedi, Trevor Butterfield wore the bounty hunter's costume as Harris served as C-3PO's stand-in to make all the necessary lighting adjustments. He also played a stormtrooper in the film.

Harris was recruited to return to the franchise with Star Wars: The Phantom Menace to serve as a stand-in for Terence Stamp, who played Supreme Chancellor Finis Valorum.

Prior to joining Star Wars, Harris worked in theater and as a model, and also served in the army.

"I have no regrets whatsoever at leaving my modeling and theatre career behind," the actor shared during a 2014 interview. "I have enjoyed my film extra and stand-in career immensely. I feel lucky to have had a successful career, particularly through the 1970s and 1980s"

Our thoughts go out to Harris' family and friends at this time.

Andy Gill, founding member and guitarist for the British post-punk outfit Gang of Four, has died at the age of 64.

Gill’s current band mates Thomas McNeice, John Sterry and Tobias Humble announced the guitarist’s death Saturday on Twitter. No cause of death was provided, but the band noted that Gill recently spent time in the hospital.

“This is so hard for us to write, but our great friend and Supreme Leader has died today,” Gang of Four wrote. “Andy’s final tour in November was the only way he was ever really going to bow out; with a Stratocaster around his neck, screaming with feedback and deafening the front row.”

The band continued, “One of the best to ever do it, his influence on guitar music and the creative process was inspiring for us, as well as everyone who worked alongside him and listened to his music. And his albums and production work speak for themselves. Go give ’em a spin for him…”

The politically conscious Gang of Four formed in the late Seventies in the wake of the punk explosion, with the band fusing punk with genres like funk and reggae, all punctuated by Gill’s jagged and incomparable riffs. Gang of Four’s 1978 debut LP Entertainment! was listed as one of Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Album of All Time.

As Gang of Four’s lone full-time member, Gill served as guitarist and producer on all nine of the band’s albums, including 2019’s Happy Now.
“His uncompromising artistic vision and commitment to the cause meant that he was still listening to mixes for the upcoming record, whilst planning the next tour from his hospital bed,” Gang of Four tweeted.

“But to us, he was our friend – and we’ll remember him for his kindness and generosity , his fearsome intelligence, bad jokes, mad stories and endless cups of Darjeeling tea. He just so happened to be a bit of a genius too.”

Bernard Ebbers, ex-CEO convicted in WorldCom scandal, dies

A former telecommunications executive convicted in one of the largest corporate accounting scandals in U.S. history died just over a month after his early release from prison. Bernard Ebbers was 78.

The former WorldCom chief died Sunday, according to a family statement cited by WAPT-TV in Mississippi.

The Mississippi-based WorldCom collapsed and went into bankruptcy in 2002, following revelations of an $11 billion accounting fraud that included pressure by top executives on subordinates to inflate numbers to make the company seem more profitable. The collapse caused losses to stockholders, including those who had invested through retirement plans.

The Canadian-born Ebbers was convicted in New York in 2005 on securities fraud and other charges and received a 25-year sentence. He was imprisoned from September 2006 until Dec. 21, when he was released from the custody of the Bureau of Prisons in Texas.

U.S. District Judge Valerie E. Caproni said it fell within her discretion to order the early release after a lawyer cited severe medical problems and said Ebbers' weight had dropped from above 200 pounds to 147 pounds. At the time, attorney Graham Carner told the judge it was possible his client might not live another 18 months.

MASH Co-Creator Gene Reynolds Dead at 96

MASH co-creator Gene Reynolds has died, as per the Directors Guild of America. He was 96. Reynolds was most known for co-creating both MASH and Lou Grant in the 1970s. Reynolds developed MASH alongside writer and producer Larry Gelbart, a CBS stalwart that lasted 11 seasons from 1972 to 1983. The show went on to become a perennial hit, winning 14 Emmys during its 11-year run. Reynolds himself won three of those — Outstanding Comedy Series (1974, shared with Gelbart) and Outstanding Directing in a Comedy Series in both 1975 and 1976.

Beginning in 1993, the producer served a four-year stint as the president of the DGA.

“Gene’s influence on the modern Directors Guild of America was significant and lasting,” current DGA president Thomas Schlamme says in a statement obtained by Variety. “During his two terms as President, he dedicated himself to making the Guild more inclusive – broadening the leadership base, encouraging younger members to take leadership positions, strengthening ties between feature directors, pushing the industry to do better on diversity and working to modify DGA agreements so that filmmakers with low budgets could benefit from DGA membership. Gene’s commitment to the Guild lasted long after his presidency ended, regularly attending Board and Western Directors Council meetings, and never hesitating to share his thoughts. He was passionate about this Guild, spirited in his beliefs and dedicated until the end.”

Former DGA exec Jay D. Roth says, “Gene was President when I became National Executive Director,” said Roth. “He was absolutely committed to revitalizing and modernizing the Guild and laying the groundwork for its growth into the future. He cared deeply about diversity and growing the leadership base of the Guild, and his passion for the DGA never wavered.”

Other than MASH, Reynolds also won another Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series for his work on Lou Grant. He won awards from the DGA for his work on both shows. Outside of producing, Reynolds served as formidable director after becoming a mainstay on television programs from Touched by an Angel to Promised Lane, Lois & Clark, Life Goes On, and more. The late producer also earned 24 director credits on MASH plus another 11 on Lou Grant.

Prior to his work behind the camera, the Cleveland native rose to prominence as a television actor with his first acting credit coming in 1934's Sins of Man. His most recent credit acting, directing, or otherwise, was on How to Get There (1999).

Gary Romberg, the Rocket Scientist Behind NASCAR's 1970 Plymouth Superbird, Dies at 85

It’s likely that not even longtime, die-hard, trivia-obsessed NASCAR fans would immediately recognize the name Gary Romberg.

Indeed, the “Old Man” (a second-generation nickname of which he was enormously proud) was among those wondrously creative souls who have always toiled quietly behind the scenes developing every major motorsports innovation in our lifetime.

In this case, it was the famous Plymouth Superbird that NASCAR legend Richard Petty and a handful of other Mopar loyalists raced with some notable distinction in the 1970 Grand National stock car season.

Romberg died two weeks ago at age 85 in his adopted hometown of Mooresville, North Carolina. He is survived by Bonny, his wife of 62 years; sons Kurt, Val and Leif; daughter Heidi; 12 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. A native of Buckley, Washington, and 1957 graduate of Cal State Poly-San Luis Obispo, the Old Man didn’t miss much during his time on this good earth. We should all live as large and accomplish as much.

Kirk Douglas Dies, Aged 103

Though he always seemed virile and active enough to outlast us all, acting, directing and producing legend Kirk Douglas has died at the age of 103.

Douglas was a man who could play stone-jawed heroes and scheming villains, who preferred to take on characters who weren't always likeable and who established an acting dynasty that includes Michael Douglas.

Born Issur Danielovitch (later changed to Demsky) in New York in 1916, the man who would go on to choose the name Kirk Douglas grew up poor, the son of a ragman (a fact that lent its name to his autobiography). With assistance from loans and scholarships, he attended St. Lawrence University, joining the wrestling team but also showing interest in dramatics. After graduating college, he worked odd jobs (including deploying his wrestling skills professionally) and paid his way through the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. Here, he met his first wife, Diana Dill, with whom he had sons Michael and Joel (a producer).

Summer Stock theatre acting followed, and Douglas hit Broadway in 1941, playing a singing messenger in Spring Again. World War II briefly interrupted his ambitions, but once he was honorably discharged, he returned to the stage, appearing in small roles, dropping out of the original production of On The Town because of illness.

Acting classmate Lauren Bacall recommended him to a producer Hal Willis, and he signed on to a contract for $500 a week. He made his film debut in 1946's The Strange Love Of Martha Ivers, moving on to other movies such as Mourning Becomes Electra and Out Of The Past. He began to clash with Willis on payment and contract issues, and rather than signing another long agreement, went freelance, working for Fox and other studios.

His first taste of stardom was 1949's Champion, which also saw him earn his first Oscar nomination, and despite his earlier wish to be free, a seven-year deal with Warner Bros. His career blossomed again, and he appeared in The Big Sky and Billy Wilder's The Big Carnival (AKA Ace In The Hole).

At MGM, he earned another Academy Award nomination from 1952's The Bad And The Beautiful. More success followed, and he met and married publicist Anne Buydens, who survives him, and had two more sons, Peter and Eric. Douglas also set up his own production company, Bryna, named for his mother.

In 1957, he gave one of the performances for which he has become legendary, in Stanley Kubrick's Paths Of Glory. And then came Spartacus, for which he hired Kubrick to replace director Anthony Mann. Kubrick wasn't a fan of the finished product, but it's seen as a classic. Spartacus also represented Douglas pushing back against the blacklist, becoming one of those to insist that writer Dalton Trumbo be credited for the movie's script.

Back on stage, Douglas starred in One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, adapted from the Ken Kesey novel. He tried for a decade to turn it into a film, but while son Michael succeeded, he'd aged out of the main role, McMurphy, with Jack Nicholson taking the lead, and winning an Oscar. "I made more money from that film than any I acted in," Douglas has said. "And I would gladly give back every cent, if I could have played that role." In addition to producing, Douglas directed two films, Scalawag in 1973 and Posse in 1975.

He faced numerous health challenges through his career, including injuries from a helicopter accident and stroke in 1995 which forced him to learn to speak again, resulting in his withdrawal from the public spotlight for a time. He returned for 1999's Diamonds and then It Runs In The Family, which co-starred Michael, and Kirk's grandson, Cameron Douglas. TV movies and the odd series appearance dotted his career, and his final two releases were indie movie Illusion and TV movie Empire State Building Murders.

A keen supporter of charities, he worked on behalf of stroke sufferers, those with Alzheimer's, and building playgrounds for children. Douglas was given an honorary Oscar in 1996 and picked up the AFI Lifetime Achievement Award in 1991. And what a life, indeed. Michael Douglas has paid tribute to his father with a statement: "It is with tremendous sadness that my brothers and I announce that Kirk Douglas left us today at the age of 103. To the world he was a legend, an actor from the golden age of movies who lived well into his golden years, a humanitarian whose commitment to justice and the causes he believed in set a standard for all of us to aspire to. But to me and my brothers Joel and Peter he was simply Dad, to Catherine, a wonderful father-in-law, to his grandchildren and great grandchild their loving grandfather, and to his wife Anne, a wonderful husband," he writes.

"Kirk’s life was well lived, and he leaves a legacy in film that will endure for generations to come, and a history as a renowned philanthropist who worked to aid the public and bring peace to the planet. Let me end with the words I told him on his last birthday and which will always remain true. Dad – I love you so much and I am so proud to be your son."

Cleveland Browns Mascot Swagger Dead At 6

Tragic day for the Cleveland Browns ... the team's first-ever live mascot, Swagger, has passed away after a battle with cancer. He was 6 years old.

The 145-pound bullmastiff joined the Browns as a puppy at the beginning of the 2014 season ... and ran out with the players before every home game until Week 10 of the 2019 season.

The only home game Swagger missed was in 2017 ... when the Browns played in London.

Swagger's son, SJ, took over the mascot duties as the cancer progressed ... and the beloved dog served as "Dawg Pound Captain" during his final Browns game.

Swagger was a fan favorite at FirstEnergy Stadium ... and even got some one-on-one time with folks like UFC champ Stipe Miocic and Baker Mayfield.

According to Browns fans in our office ... the dog was a true bright spot during some of the Browns' worst years.

Mayfield posted a tribute to Swagger, saying "Doggy heaven got a good one today."

The team says SJ will continue to fill his dad's shoes for 2020 and beyond.

#RIP
