Man, Strydom had a sick physique in his prime! Those are some kick ass genetics. He almost has those levrone coconut shoulders going on, dont you guy think? (not quite, but somewhat)..

I remember when Strydom was coming up. He was pretty much an afterthought. This guy was supposed to be the next big thing.

I spoke about this the other day.....

I was at the 1996 NOC and a ROOKIE named Gunter looked WAY better than a veteran named Strydom.

In 2006 it isnt even a comparison. Gunter is top 3 Olympia Material. Gunter is so huge its crazy to compare him to Strydom. Gunter carries 40lbs more muscle than Gary and Gunter has a much better back and biceps that are among the best ever. Gary's legs are tiny compared Schlierkamp's.

Personally I think Gary owns Gunter in that pose and Gunter is no slouch in the muscularity department.

How so?  Gunter's delts and bi's are noticably bigger, and his legs completely trash him.  The only thing I see Strydom having on Gunter is maybe tri's.

SPEAK ON THIS.

 ;D

Is Strydom really 6'1 and 1/2?

Strydom is 6'0" 1/2" not 6'1" 1/2

Matt mendenhall's career - such as it was - was pretty much over by '86.   It is hard to imagine anyone suggesting that Strydom was an afterthought:

1983

Florida Championships - NPC, Junior Overall Winner
Florida Championships - NPC, Junior - HeavyWeight, 1st

1984

USA Championships - NPC, HeavyWeight, 1st

1986

Nationals - NPC, HeavyWeight, 1st
Nationals - NPC, Overall Winner

It was a close call that year with Shane Dimora finishing a close second in the overall.  Shane later tore his pec and his career was through as fast as it started. Shane did make a comeback later on but much like Benfatto, everything was spot-on but the pec tear was far too noticeable.

The Weider magazines certainly did attempt to turn Mendenhall's All american good looks into a cash stream for them.  This is proabably what you meant and is indeed true.  His pics were all over the place.

He finished second to Hawk at the USA championships I think.
When he finished second at the Games, that just about sealed his fate.  Berry DeMey was introduced to the world at this point.
Luck just wasn't with the guy.

Strydom has some really good parts and so does gunter but.... Gunter deffinetly has the better overall look and more complete development.

Come on, Gunter is blocky at his best...NOT top 3 Olympia material. Strydoms overall aesthetics wreck him.

Correction: Top 3 in the Olympia in this day and age where mass outweighs aesthetics.

Gunter is a fridge and has always been a fridge.I dont care what year its been, none of his looks have impressed me.Its not really Gunters fault as he doesn't seem to be a heavy GH guy.His hip structure is just huge. His waist must be 38" at its smallest. There is no way he can make his shoulders big enough to get a taper.

strydom....
easily...
i still dont think gunter is top 3 material...
8th at best..
sure he's 300lb...
but his muscles insertion and muscle sweep... and fulness are definetly inferior to a lot of guys he places ahead of
choice is an illusion

Honestly, if they really judged the show, Gary could give Gunter a serious run for the money. I personally feel Gary is a hell of alot better!

It is amazing what a little Test and hard training can do for someone of Strydom's age

Been to lotsa shows over the years guys, including Strydoms wins at WBF....if he is on the money he is much rounder than Gunter, and far less blocky through the obliques. Has anyone noticed it looks like Gunter has torn his quads somewhat (teardrop above knees?)

I've seen Strydoms leg development way better than in that photo. Is that a recent photo?

I think its more camera angle- shot sort of from above looking down- making legs look less than they really are in that shot

No I think that back in the day Strydom had amazing legs - they look like he's let them go a bit.
