I remember when Strydom was coming up. He was pretty much an afterthought. This guy was supposed to be the next big thing.
Matt mendenhall's career - such as it was - was pretty much over by '86. It is hard to imagine anyone suggesting that Strydom was an afterthought:
1983
Florida Championships - NPC, Junior Overall Winner
Florida Championships - NPC, Junior - HeavyWeight, 1st
1984
USA Championships - NPC, HeavyWeight, 1st
1986
Nationals - NPC, HeavyWeight, 1st
Nationals - NPC, Overall Winner
It was a close call that year with Shane Dimora finishing a close second in the overall. Shane later tore his pec and his career was through as fast as it started. Shane did make a comeback later on but much like Benfatto, everything was spot-on but the pec tear was far too noticeable.
The Weider magazines certainly did attempt to turn Mendenhall's All american good looks into a cash stream for them. This is proabably what you meant and is indeed true. His pics were all over the place.
He finished second to Hawk at the USA championships I think.
When he finished second at the Games, that just about sealed his fate. Berry DeMey was introduced to the world at this point.
Luck just wasn't with the guy.
