Does anyone here know if varicose veins are actually unhealthy? Too lazy to research it myself. I know I haven't seen it explained well on forums, posters seem to just assume something dangerous is going on.

In older people, it's a sign of venous insufficiency. Basically the veins have trouble sending back to the heart, and you wind up with things like leg edema, odd skin sensation and coloration, and risk of ulceration (this one can be nasty). I haven't seen many athletic people have many problems with them, aside from cosmetically, or with skin sensation.

His aren't just cosmetic.

This is how it will go for him. Itchy skin, followed by pain/discomfort, leg ulcers that don't heal, hugely increased risk of blood clots and in turn increased risk of heart attacks and strokes. Dead by 40

Also the 2 things that exasperate the condition. Being overweight/excess muscle mass and heavy lifting.

It's amazing to me how we can watch a guy like McCarver blow himself up and die under the guidance of Jansen and then another young guy takes his place and does the same.  This only ends in a medical retirement or death.
