Judge halts home upgrades in Beverly Hills over city's lack of affordable housing

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (KABC) -- A Los Angeles County Superior Court ruling has found that the city of Beverly Hills cannot issue new construction permits because it is not following state laws requiring it to plan for affordable housing.

Judge Curtis Kin's ruling still allows Beverly Hills to move forward with any new residential developments, but prohibits the city from issuing permits for residential renovations, commercial developments or any other construction projects.

The affordable housing advocate group Californians for Homeownership filed suit against Beverly Hills last year, accusing the city of skirting state housing laws for years.

For more than 50 years, California law requires cities to have a compliant affordable housing plan that spells out where housing for people at various income levels will be developed.

It’s really gone to shit since.  There were RVs on blocks running generators, various pieces of furniture in the middle of the road, and fires burning in steel drums. 

The hotel where I stayed in 2001 was now surrounded by a high fence, and a guard was on duty at the parking lot entrance 24/7, asking for your room number.

We went to Denny’s for dinner, and the parking lot was almost empty.  We were one of two customers, and the prices were 15-20% higher than here in Riverside County.

At 1:30 you can see an RV in the background.  There were many along that street that were running generators; it was like a street-long shanty town.

Adam Schiff (D-CA) and Katie Porter (D-CA) are also seeking to grab the seat. Compared to Lee, her fellow Democrats Schiff and Porter have called for an increase in the minimum wage to $20 to $25/hours. Lee’s proposal would make it so minimum wage workers earn $104,000 annually.

At a Monday night debate with Schiff, Porter, and Republican Steve Garvey (who does not support any minimum wage increase), Lee defended her plan when pushed on how such a dramatic increase could be sustainable.

Mission Street is a north-south arterial thoroughfare in San Francisco, California that runs from Daly City's southern border to San Francisco's northeast waterfront , recent street conditions have decimated local businesses large and small from retail pharmacies to restaurants , block after block of vacant store fronts is what mission street has been reduced to.

In this video I’m walking the downtown part of the mission, what I found is a transformation of the city no one could have imagined just a few years ago.

The referendum sought to repeal Proposition 209, a 1996 initiative based on the 1964 Civil Rights Act that amended California’s Constitution to prohibit government institutions from discriminating on the basis of race, sex, or ethnicity in their hiring practices.

“The state shall not discriminate against, or grant preferential treatment to, any individual or group, on the basis of race, sex, color, ethnicity, or national origin in the operation of public employment, public education, or public contracting,” Proposition 209 read.

Though the California Senate in June 2020 had voted to strike these words from California’s Constitution, Golden State voters overwhelmingly rejected the proposal (56–44%).

When you become state property, you lose your right to consent. I would know — I’ve been through it. Upon imprisonment, women are told “no means no” and “yes is not allowed.”

There’s a collective understanding — sex is strictly prohibited on all counts behind bars, right? That was, until California passed AB 999 in 2013, requiring all prisons to furnish condoms for inmates by 2019.

Naturally, men began to infiltrate women’s prisons. The ballpark count is at least 40, but it’s hard to be sure because California refuses to publish this data and gives men the option of acquiring a new state identification number to reduce stigma.

The floodgates have opened for men with histories of violence against women —  often including charges such as aggravated rape — to transfer into women’s general population facilities.

Sophisticated ‘burglary tourists’ fly from South America to rob wealthy homes, LAPD says

In the desert around Scottsdale, Ariz., on Monday, police officers hunted for a member of an international heist ring suspected of swiping jewels and luxury goods from homes across Los Angeles. Using helicopters and drones, they eventually found him hiding under a tree.

The wanted man, it turned out, was a 17-year-old from Chile.

Authorities say the teenager and his two adult accomplices later admitted to breaking into multiple homes, part of a growing trend of “burglary tourism” from South America.

Increasingly over the last five years, police officials say, thieves from South American nations have entered the U.S. for the purpose of committing robberies.

Once in the country, police say, they plan heist sprees and fence the loot before dispatching their earnings back home.

‘I can tell you that we have a significant increase in burglaries from organized groups that are outside this country, that are coming into the country, and they are targeting high-end residents,’ LAPD Chief Dominic Choi said….
