The beard is fine, maybe a little too overshaped. It's the pencil moustache that makes it all look peculiar

Also it looks like he has plugs or maybe spray on hair. At a minimum he went jet black just for men.

At the time scorned would have meant betrayed as in the case of a woman who had been replaced by another woman by a man.
