He actually had some incredible songs. He wasn't liked by many because of the hokey image they presented him to be to the public. I real life he was dark with a drinking problem. I look at the catalog of his work and many artists would be fools not to cover his songs.
His song writing in my opinion was brilliant, and those in the business always commented on his musicianship. I was a fan and had a chance to see him at a small venue in Austin and passed on it thinking I would see him next year. He died shortly after that.
