The Vulture-Like Dracula Parrot Is Both Frightening And Gorgeous

Out of approximately 10,000 known bird species, there are about 350 parrot species alive across the world. Some parrot species are one of the most intelligent bird species in the world.
Unfortunately, parrot species are becoming more and more extinct because of the destruction of habitat and over-trapping for the pet trade. One species that is close to extinction is the Presquet’s parrot, otherwise known as the Dracula parrot.
Dracula Parrot & Appearance
One of the first things that you’ll notice when seeing a Presquet’s parrot is that their body is the shape of a parrot whereas their heads look like the head of a vulture. Very rarely you see a creature that is scary and beautiful at the same time.
Another name for this Dracula Parrot is the vulturine parrot. Out of its genus, the Dracula Parrot is the only member. Its genus is the only member of the subfamily of Psittrichadinae which makes the bird species even rarer. The only place that you can find the bird is in the lower mountains and cloud forests in the foothills of New Guinea.
An adult Dracula Parrot can grow up to be 18 inches (46 cm) tall from its beak to the end of the tails. It can reach the weight of 24-28 oz (680-800 g).
The Dracula/goth nickname to this bird is given because of its black feathers across its body with the red feathers on its belly and some part of their inner-wings. Its chest has a greyish color while his tail and beak are also black. There is almost no difference between the males and females of this species. The only difference that you will see is that males have a red spot behind their eyes while the females don’t.
Juveniles of this species are very similar to the adults, however, the red is much duller.
When you compare the Dracula Parrot to other parrot species, their head is typically somewhat smaller. The reason for this is that they have black facial skin and relatively long hooked beaks.
The Dracula Parrot species tend to live up to 9 years and are not part of the migrating species.
Because the species is a frugivore, their diet consists entirely of a few species of figs. Many researchers have been suspecting that this is the reason why they have a semi-bald head. However, nectar and flowers are not excluded from their diet since some bird watchers saw them feeding on them.
In different seasons, this bird becomes nomadic in search of fruits.
