I use wood to heat but I buy it.....no way an I cutting it or splitting it......I`m originally rom the city so fuck wood. 
Lots of Amih people here.....no clue as to why anyone would want to live like they do....bit 10 of those fuckers can throw a huge house with a barn up in a weeks time.
They say it's 'carbon neutral.' We has the climate virtue!
I'm not entirely Amish. I use a Stihl and my quad to collect it up with the dog running around next to me. There's still enough labor in getting it together that I want a maximally efficient burn and want to keep the heat instead of venting it up the chimney. Got a stone fireplace at the moment but will fabricate a stove insert. Thinking of a dual option up/downdraft fan forced with a double barrel style heat exchanger followed by air to water.
I can't even imagine getting a season's wood together with a hand saw and an axe.
