The protection is short lived because the flu virus mutates. In essence each annual flu vaccine is a new vaccine as it's a new formulation. It's not 5 of the same vaccine like covid. It's one and done. That's a big difference.

The original plan for the vaccine was 1-2 shots, so not dissimilar from influenza vaccine. The need for boosters was allegedly unforeseen, although our prior experience with other coronaviruses should have clued us in that immunity was unlikely to be durable. The flu shot is one and done
for that season and theres a good case to make that it should be 2 shots/season for high risk individuals:
