He was effectively a pro, just not an IFBB one.  His gig on American Gladiators gave him considerable more income than being an IFBB pro would have. And he did have supplement deals (AG actually had its own supplements; and I believe Smith was a Twinlab guy, like Quinn).

Pretty sure he competed in the NPC (saw some onstage pics somewhere) did much better as an American Gladiator….he was tall like 6 ft 2” or something … shame he passed away so young

You're right if I recall correctly Quinn was 6'1" and Billy Smith was 6'3"

It's amazing theres 30 years difference between the two pics. Strydom looks way better and never came close to winning the O. I wonder how he would have done in 91 up against Lee and Dorian?
