It looks like we may be going with the 2 car garage in town but there is a nice gym nearby and the food proximity will make more gains than more home gym equipment. I mean I am going to try and fit it somewhere but not getting that 3rd car so either it has to go upstairs in bonus room or share garage

Have you sold the vette yet? I'm guessing it is on the to go list as it is not a practical family car.

I am keeping the vette actually looked up length of it today to compare to garage as may have to share the garage with the vette and the gym. 14 foot vette and 22 foot garage so should have some extra space up front other side has to keep the beetle and motorcycles so again will be full but the beetle and vette are not 22 feet so can put some gym stuff up front

I am having second thoughts would a smith machine with a functional trainer be better than a power rack? Is a smith machine a better long term investment for an aging lifter than a rack? Would smith machine squats and the ability to do smith machine incline and flat bench be better than just having pins for heavy squats? Still has a half rack for barbell squats but also has the smith?

The smith machine makes it easier to do partials past failure as you are not stabilizing the bar. Still has  a half rack on the outside with arms to support heavy free squats but that smith on incline barbell and flat barbell presses might be nice and could also do smith squats to allow greater foot placement and can go closer to failure greater pump if not stabilizing worried about a knee blowing out.

That might not be the exact model but thinking maybe a half rack smith with a functional is better option

As you age you have to change and adapt. If you don't you will ruin your joints beyond repair. Of course there are always exceptions. I digress but a guy who lives near me just ran a marathon at 7 minutes pace at 67 years old. Obvious an exception.

Getting back to adapting to age I had to give up the bench. I just hits my shoulder joint badly. I really think it might be a bad exercise for many. Look at the injuries and wear of so many lifters. Olympic lifters avoid the movement.  Nothing wrong with going the smith machine route if you think it will help as you age. Just make sure the machine is either bolted or weighted down. Tipping a smith has injured a few. Make sure it's properly designed.

In the end we are here to exercise the muscles. If you are in it to impress others with the weight you can shift up with a short range of motion you are in to prop up insecurities.

Sounds good Bhanky. Do you have a floor plan you can post for the new place?

As a sad pathetic loser nothing gets me more excited than looking at floor plans.

I hate to say it but I do think the smith is probably safer and better for joints as we age especially for people with previous injuries or those wanting to do partials. It is also great for beginners so would be a good way to introduce the kids to weightlifting. Having the safety bars and still being able to do free squats is also nice. I think I may go that route even though not what rogue and rep offer I do see some companies that have that setup that look decent.

This is upstairs floorplan. The master is downstairs. We went under contract yesterday. We are having the unfinished storage space finished that is going to be my gym and or office space. I can either build my gym in there and throw a desk in corner or I squeeze the gym into garage and that entire space becomes my office. Kind of debating which I would prefer. Putting a hard floor down now but could put rubber gym floor over it. The pool table goes in the upstairs Loft.

Looks and sounds good. May I suggest the home office in the loft with the pool table if there is space? I had this set up for a few years and really miss it. It was nice to get up from the desk for 10 mins, stretch my legs and mess around on the table. Found it great for clearing my head too.

Sounds like a good plan.

When I build my house I paid extra to have close to 9 foot ceilings in the basement so I could lift over head standing. I have more height than I need. Wife was great about letting me have an elaborate home gym down there. We use the two car garage for storage and it looks like Sanford and Son in there. I have to get rid of some crap. Never had a car in the garage since I moved in 20 years ago.

Why not just up the dose? It’s worked for you in the past

You have the gear testing kit.

If you have the room, why not separate Smith and Power Rack? I like squatting between 4 uprights, rather than out of rack.
(If someone ever had a fainting incident, it could save your life). You could get a Smith and a Rack for what this monster even costs.
(Titan, Valor, etc).

Its all preference though and to each his own...

Same with me.. This is my 3rd house in a 35 year period. All had double garages.
One side was always my gym, the other side was always my band rehearsal space...

Never had a car in a garage in 35 years. Harsh N.E. Winters and all... Im not a gear head, so I dont care if my cars get beat up by the weather...
We still have one of our CR-V's from 2004 (going on 20 yrs)...
