As you are aware, selling a property for X dollars does not mean that the seller pockets X dollars.  Asking for help to pay medical bills isn’t really what I would call a “stunt” either.

No one selling a 9000sq ft house for millions will ever get a donation from me.  Likewise no one who has bragged about being the strongest man in the world and presumably earning the dollars that go with that title (purse winnings, endorsements, etc) is getting my donations either.  You are welcome to disagree and open your wallet for Kaz… but I caution you… after meeting the $40k goal they jacked it up to $100k looking for more suckers—I mean donors—to give. ::)

Poor MaryLou, she probably had to sell the house to pay those medical bills. This champion is likely living in a 4000 sq ft shack living hand to mouth because Bay won’t cover her medical bills. Such a sad story.

It’s not Mary Lou’s fault she never received financial training while she devoted her youth to bringing glory to our country.

I wonder if her name holds any value in the sports memorabilia autograph circuit, or if she could teach gymnastics courses to raise money?

Yes, you’ve already stated that she sold her 9000sqft house for millions of dollars.  You’ve also previously stated that you wouldn’t be donating.  No need to repeat it for a third time.

I’ll ask my question to you again, as you failed to acknowledge it:  You understand that the price a property sells for, and the price that the seller receives are different sums of money, yes?  I would have thought you knew this but you keep referencing the selling price of the house as if it bears any relevance to her wealth

PV do you think Mary Lou lost money on the sale of the house? Or she was upside down and had to take a loss?

I think Bays point was she should have some resources based on the sale.

But I think Bays larger point was that those in the “limelight” are often better off than the “fans” of said person, and the money grabs are disgusting. I think it was wrestler Scott Hall who had a go fund me for a surgery and he sent autographed merch to those who donated.

It’s likely Kaz wasn’t wealthy but he probably did okay. Asking for help isn’t wrong and neither is changing the amount asked for but they do have a responsibility to keep their donators informed of the process.

 ;D ;D

I recall that ML Retton sold her house one or two years before her medical dramas unfolded and in her defense it was her daughter who set up the gofundme; nevertheless it is unseemly that someone with such a high profile and millions in endorsement deals would end up begging the public for money to cover her healthcare costs or otherwise be without insurance.  Kaz is in the same envelope... globetrotting at 71 with no health coverage?  Shamefully bad choices in life. >:(

Quite a few World Strongest Man competitors have died (relatively) young. I couldn't find a list online, must be somewhere, or a video.

Anyone participating in such sports should try to get the best medical insurance they can get.

No idea if this list is worth anything. If they really understood health I don’t think most would stay in it very long.

 * Jon Pall Sigmarsson: A multiple-time World's Strongest Man champion, Sigmarsson died of a heart attack in 1993 at the age of 32.
 * Mike Jenkins: A highly regarded strongman competitor, Jenkins died in 2013 at the age of 31 from an enlarged heart, suspected to be caused by long-term steroid use.
 * Geoff Capes: A two-time World's Strongest Man champion, Capes also achieved success as a shot putter. He passed away in 2024 at the age of 75.

Bad life choices—like traveling abroad without health insurance at 71– makes you wonder why anyone would look up to this “champion” much less donate their money to him.  WTF has he been doing with his money and life to end up in this situation?

Geoff Capes only made it to 75? He should have lived to be 76 according to census data!

These guys are passing way to soon.

When I was in college there was a dude named Johnny Perry who was dominating the qualifiers and died before getting to the big show, IIRC. He was 27 when he passed I think.

Sigmarsson was the most entertaining competitor ever in that contest. I think he knew he would die young and didn't give a shit.

Some actually get quite old, but that extreme lifestyle must be damaging for their health:

He's the reason I got into strongman and powerlifting.

His son claims Jon knew he had a heart condition and would die young, and that's why he was the way he was.

Not sure if that is true or just trying to build on his legend.

Either way JPS had a crazy life and loved what he did it seemed.
