I guess clean & press would activate most muscle groups, but I hate doing them, the clean is not very gentle on my body.

For long stretches of time I did only deads, a whole workout could be 15 total reps including warm-ups, once a week. People asked me how much I was training. A little I said. A little my ass was the reply...

Ultra Abbreviated training? i did just BB presses & squats for a while

Indeed but i just feel better squating .. but yeah a real power full body exercise & time tested by the strongest of the strong !

The preference probably depends on your structure. For many the free barbell squat feels like an injurious, awkward exercise, like for many tall people. Though some say you should do the exercises you hate doing, I say listen to your body. Lots of people have a real fear of hurting their lower backs deadlifting; though the squat may often be more risky for the lower back. You don't have to use excessive loads on deads. At least some deads may protect against tweaking your back on squat and row exercises imo, a weak lower back is a big weakness. Strong abs and lower back for back health.

If you give someone excercises they dont like doing they wont do them

I always advise people to find excercises that work the muscle through a full range of motion that you like doing, that way they will do them.
