SULPHUR SPRINGS, Texas (KLTV) - A Hopkins County man chose to have the jury decide his sentence if he was found guilty of child sex crimes. On Thursday, they decided to give him a sentence of life in prison.
Jason Crossland of Sulphur Springs was convicted of two counts possession of child pornography. One count was for a video of a child being assaulted, and the other was for possessing 100 or fewer explicit visual items of a child.
The jury was required to review explicit evidence as the prosecutors proved their case against Crossland. After a relatively brief deliberation, the district attorney said, the jury found Crossland guilty as charged.
He had elected to have the jury assess punishment if he was found guilty. After both the State and the defense presented brief testimony, with the prosecution arguing for maximum sentence of life in prison, the jury deliberated.
The jury responded by assessing Crossland ten years confinement on the third degree indictment, plus a $10,000 fine.
On the 1st degree indictment, they assessed a penalty of life in prison, plus a $10,000 fine. The sentences will be served consecutively, the district attorney said, meaning that Crossland will spend a minimum of 35 years in prison before he is eligible for parole.
