Poor parenting. Lack of respect and discipline. Limited mental development and maturity.

The extreme narcissism comes from being raised by an absentee parent who couldn’t be bothered to tell BWHH that what he was doing was wrong and never corrected or disciplined him. The “free will” upbringing without boundaries leads the child to believe that they are special and the rest of society owes them everything. It is why Hankins creates his false realities through dishonesty and then refuses to accept responsibility or accountability when he fails. In his stunted level of mental development he doesn’t think he fails, he thinks the world just isn’t capable of understanding his successes on the intellectual level he exists at.

His lack of social skills is highly likely a mental disorder. He chronic lying is definitely a symptom of a sociopath.

I get what Brian is trying to do.  He thinks that by giving his kid options (even at utterly retarded moments like allowing him to dictate training), he isn't driving the kid towards the type of cobra kai lameness that pervades himself.  He very often refers to the options he gives the kid in response to any pushing about whether he's doing the right thing. 

Still, that aside, he is still doing exactly what his parents did which was cart him around looking for low hanging fruit to boost the ego of the boy so that he has an impossibly high opinion of himself to get rebutted in adulthood (and become the same chip on the shoulder that Brian has).
