I tried researching it, but I can't figure out which is actually the best and most secure. I was thinking about Linux, but it appears to be a massive rabbithole.

  • Thank you for your attention to this matter.
I use Linux exclusively.
It's excellent.
If you want a Linux version that mimics Windows try Linux Mint.
You can buy a computer that is on Windows and then blow out Windows and install Mint.

If you need it for work then get whatever they use.

I read that keeping linux secure takes advanced knowledge and constant attention, while MacOs and Windows does most of that automatically. True or false?

Never buy a Mac. Overpriced crap, super arrogant company too. Apple decides what's best for you. Everything goes only throught their app store. Apple is a brand for retards with a slave mentality.

Spend as little money as possible. All computers are throwaway products. No matter if it's a desktop, laptop or smartphone. And only buy with a huge discount. Don't buy "refurbished", theyx all suck.
Better to buy a new one from the 2024 or 2023 model year.

I actually started test driving Debian, and for my use cases it's very easy to use, I notice almost no difference with windows. But I got worried about security, as I read that it assumes you know what you are doing in terms of security, and for example does not come with firewalls or antivirus if I understand correctly.

As ex computer geek...I would disagree with the refurb part.  Super inexpensive and you don't have to deal with the bloatware bullshit that comes with new computers.  I do agree with spend as little as possible and that they are all throw away.

For example...

Dell 7050 Mini Tower Desktop
Intel i7-7700
4.20GHz Processor
32GB DDR4 Ram
New 1TB NVMe SSD + 2TB HDD
Wi-Fi
BT Wireless Keyboard and Mouse
Win 11 Pro (Renewed)

$270

Thats more than enough for the average person.  Would it support a Getbigger requirement of 6 screens to watch the Olympia?  Probably not.  I only buy the refurb stuff for my office.  I never spend more then $150 on them either.

I built mine and thats the way I go for home.

This is all great advice.  Especially the bold part.

I bet you are right. Having said that, have you noticed that a lot of computer scientists use macs when doing public appearances? Is it a sponsorship or a legit choice? Obviously we can't really know that. But I have wondered.  Same for other public figures, usually sporting macs, iphones, iwatches. For technical reasons, identity management, or endorsement deals? We will never know.

ZX81 (Sinclair Basic Interpreter),
VIC-20 (Commodore Kernal and Basic 2.0),
Amstrad (AMDOS)

or

Amiga (AmigaOS).

Besides that, no.  There's no reason anyone who dons a thong for battle and going to war with iron would want to CAD software.

I've bought refurbs for years with excellent results.
Debian is just a version of Linux.  What Linux are you using.
Anti-virus not necessary with Linux but you can use ClamTK if you want.
It does have a firewall.  You just turn it on.

I played around with Linux a few decades ago - lol! It's cute and all, but what kind of productivity software can you run on it? 3D work, photo editing, audio editing, video editing, games, the list goes on. It just cannot compete with Windows. If all you care about is browsing web site and basic photo editing with Gimp, then yes Linux will be sufficient.

Pre-activated as in hacked? Hacked Windows and Warez is fine for your play computers. If you have confidential info or use it for crypto related stuff then it is probably better to get a vanilla PC / Laptop with a legitimate copy of Windows and antivirus software. And that vanilla PC should only be used for banking / crypto related activities and shutdown when done.

Mint is awesome! My favorite program is Hypnotix, a free world TV app. I'm obsessed with RTV Noord from the Netherlands. No clue what they're saying but a cool channel (so are the other RTV channels). I want to visit the Netherlands so bad.

Taking into account everything you've said, I'd probably just do a hybrid linux / windows and see where you end up.

Not a hard to thing to have both and then the limitations you'll have in linux will be catered to.

Mac.

No one I know has anything but Apple products at home although many do use Windows for work.

Don’t even know what Linux is.

It seems like it's an ideological issue for many. This makes it even more confusing.
