If the woman is fed up with life and doesn't give a crap about anything anymore...and is not mentally right...and she feels like she's under attack and threatened...then in her mind this is normal behavior. If she was not provoked, and just snapped...she is at fault.
If the man assaulted her first...and put his hands on her first...which I read that he did...then this is the possible consequence of assaulting someone. And I also read that he was fired. Of course this is not the legal way to settle your disagreement...but in this day and age it's a scenario that can happen.
