Emory was a heavy drinker, loved gambling and women, and spent enormous amounts of time travelling around the United States playing chess tournaments. He could disappear for weeks at a time, travelling by bus from tournament to tournament and living an almost nomadic existence. His obsession with chess was intense, but chess itself did not make him wealthy, and the family reportedly struggled financially.
