The second pic, another pic to show the regression of the sport, isn't a smart comparison because Ruhl was full of 'enhancements' as well. It's why his biceps popped like that :D

The competitors aren't fatter today, they're much leaner in fact, it's not why they appear smoother. They have more detail at least in several body parts today as well, but the physique is 'crowded' due to the extra size so it may appear as though there's little detail and less separation between parts. The waist comparison may not be a fair comparison either because Buchanan's waist was really unique even back then. At the same time I'm not arguing the guys look better now, I see why fans think that.

Regarding being lean, Lee Priest used to say it shouldn't be a dieting contest. His ass was never striated; probably why he said that. But perhaps being extra lean isn't actually helping aesthetics?

The lack of detail/separations nowadays is so obviously SEO abuse I am really disappointed to have to point it out to you.

You don't have to point it out to me.

It's why I said

They have more detail at least in several body parts today as well,

Which is true, in some body parts there's more detail. I've said many times body parts like delts are a mess because everyone builds about 30% more delt size with enhancements. SEO is used less in quads and hams and ass for example, though some have put it in abs even. The 'crowding' phenomenon is something very few have thought about. Does Buchanan look like he has much more striations and detail than Krizo? Clearly Krizo is leaner and has more "detail." Doesn't mean he's more appealing. Many have actually pointed out that today's competitors are too lean in their opinion and it looks ugly to them. If Buchanan was transported to a pro stage today everyone would say he looks at least 8 weeks out and didn't even try dieting.

Back in his day only Gaspari had a striated ass. Today many pros have some glute cuts in the deepest off-season. They hold a lot more water though. I started reading bb mags when Gaspari was on top and I remember what a novelty his ass was :D Him and then Renel Janvier.
