Shrooms dampen the default mode network which is a task negative network in the brain, essentially one's autobiographical sense of self (our running narrative or privileged stories). It has many other effects as well... the salience network, namely the anterior insula and some prefrontal cortex stuff.
Without that running narrative the sense of a "self" dissipates- what remains is a sense of minimal phenomenal selfhood- pure awareness free from linguistic identifiers and signs. This sense of self is pre-reflection, pre-linguistic, it is the real... it's presence.
The odd thing is that this "presence" is actually more of an absence as it's a no-thing (it's prior to the subject object dichotomy) but clearly aware. It's intangible but the reduction base for whatever is happening. It's completely open (nothing), aware and unchanging---- it's MIND.
