The National Drug Council played a very important role in the bodybuilding championships held at King’s Sport Centre on Saturday 3 June.

The World Natural Bodybuilding Federation’s (WNBF) Pro Natural Universe Championships, the WNBF Caribbean Figure Championships and the International Bodybuilding Federation’s (INBF) Caribbean Grand Prix Bodybuilding and Figure Championships were all contested at the weekend’s event, organised by Tiger Wilson and his company, Eye of a Tiger Promotions.

For the second time the National Drug Council and the promoters joined forces to provide drug testing procedures to the over 50 local and international contestants. From Thursday through Saturday, 1 to 3 June, all participants underwent polygraph (lie detector) tests by a certified licensed and insured official examiner from overseas, as well as GC/MS (gas chromatography/mass spectrometry) urinalysis testing, all under the observation of the NDC.

NDC also assisted with providing two resident doctors to oversee the drug testing and participate in the pre-judging of contestants.

Urine samples were tested for a full range of anabolic steroids, masking agents, diuretics, pro-hormones and other illegal performance-enhancing drugs as well as related diuretic and steroidal compounds.

“We applaud the organisers for taking rigorous steps to ensure that this is an all-natural event by utilising the highest quality examinations. We know that drug use in sports has been much reported and it is indeed encouraging to see that these Caymanian sport promoters and competitors have demonstrated their commitment to complying with the regulatory standards of the World Natural Bodybuilding Federation (WNBF) and are supporting drug-free athletic excellence,” Ms. Catherine Chesnut, Chief Executive Officer of the NDC, stated.

“The NDC is pleased to be associated with the Championships and fully endorse this event while we encourage all sporting organisations to take drug testing seriously,” she added.

As part of its endorsement, the NDC also presented trophies and T-shirts to all contestants for their achievement and in support their choice to be drug free.
