How can Chick decrease his credibility more?

ONE-SHOW COMEBACK SET FOR ATLANTIC CITY
Written by: Shawn Perine

To fans of 1990’s bodybuilding the name DON LONG conjures images of a mass monster with beautiful lines. The 1995 overall Nationals winner showed tremendous promise right from the start of his pro career, when he took third place in his IFBB bow at the 1996 Night of Champions behind winner FLEX WHEELER and a guy named RONNIE COLEMAN.

A mere four years into his pro career, however, Long was diagnosed with massive kidney failure. He soon learned that he was born with one atrophied kidney that was effectively non-functioning. The condition may very well have necessitated that he eventually undergo dialysis treatment had he lived an average, sedentary life. The extraordinary stresses of elite bodybuilding, though, necessitated it immediately, lest he wanted to end up an extremely muscular corpse. Oh, and he had to give up competitive bodybuilding too, doctor’s orders.

Knowledgeable fans may remember that Long received a kidney transplant on March 23, 2002, courtesy of elder sister Michelle. In a groundbreaking act of selflessness, Michelle had become the first volunteer in a program that allowed family members to donate organs in order to move loved ones up the donor’s list.

Unfortunately, the kidney Long received didn’t take and he was forced to live a lifetime of six-day-a-week dialysis treatments, which he self-administers from his home.

Contest-going bodybuilding fans may have noticed that over the past four years Long has had an increasing presence at top NPC and IFBB competitions and that with each appearance the man has done a bit of increasing himself. In fact, the Don Long of 2006 is beginning to look strikingly similar to the Don Long of a decade ago.

Still, it should come as a surprise to even the most ardent of Long fans that he is planning to test the competitive waters again, dialysis and all. “I’ve decided to step onto a bodybuilding stage once again,” he confides. “Up until a couple of months ago I never even thought about competing again. I had put it all behind me. I was just going to work on my business.

“Part of my business was to do a training video, which I was planning on doing in September. Then, once I’d decided to do that I thought I should start trying to get in shape for it. After that I thought that if I started to look pretty good again, why not just step onstage again? So I’ve got my energy focused on doing that now.”

Long plans to make his return September 23 at the Atlantic City Pro in Atlantic City, New Jersey. But don’t call it a comeback. Long’s only plans are to do this one show and nothing more. “My goal is really just to show people that if you put your heart and mind into something you can always find a way to come back from adversity. For me, this is just about finishing my career on my own terms. It’s not to beat anybody else or to win this or win that. I don’t have any plans for further competitions. When I was told I’d have to go on dialysis in ’99 I had no choice. But now the choice is mine.”

Long says he’s gotten medical clearance to compete again and that with his conviction to maintaining a healthy diet, regular exercise and a positive attitude his return to the posing dais poses little threat to his health.

Here’s to Don beating very Long odds indeed.

Unreal.  This is certainly going to make the Atlantic Pro a show to follow!

240 started a thread, and you all jumped to your own conclusions....as usual.
Don's Kidney transplant didn't take as of 2 years ago due to rejection...he's been back on dialysis since.
NO, he isn't planing a comeback...

Should give light to ANYTHING 240 writes...

I was going to post that Don's kidney's had failed and he was back on dialysis but I thought I'd let someone else inform you.  Pleasant surprise Chick did.  You should next time check the facts before opening your big mouth.  Don's barely alive.

240 has came to the conclusion that Don Long is going to compete without no kidney's....... ::)  Even David Blaine couldn't pull that shit off.

If you folks are willing to believe this guy then you need to get your head checked.

Please stop this posting.  Just like Chick said, he isn't getting back on stage.....ever.

He's looked incredible at expos this year.   I know it says a one-time thing, but you'd have to wonder how he could decline an O invite, just a week later, if he should win top 3.

ATLANTIC CITY
PRO  Sep 22-23  Atlantic City.
NEW JERSEY  Sports Partners LLC/Ronald Goldstein, Stokely Palmer
Ph. 732-261-8713
Ph. 973-224-5052  $30,000

Will his kidney ailment be the most severe EVER experienced by a pro BBer and still competing?  This goes way beyond what Flex and TP did, right?   His condition, good or bad, will probably be the story of the week.  I sure hope BBing.com is scrambling to get the hookup with the webcast (if they haven't already).  I am SURE that many would tune in to see what Long looks like, and if he gets an O slot, who else will jump in for a last minute qualification, and IF don will compete at the O, should he get an invite.

I'm gonna take a guess that Cicherillo is as shocked as anyone, he sees what Prince lives through.

Good find 240.

Quick, if it's not too late, add Don Long to my deadpool! I wonder if he would let me take out a 12 week insurance policy on him. He may be a good guy, but I'm wondering if his bicep size is larger than his IQ.

Wonder if doctors gave him medical clearance to resume steroids, hgh, insulin, and diuretics.

I would guess the chances of him doing a Momo is slightly bigger.

Since he has no kidneys to fuck up, the kidney he recieved was rejected etc maybe competing and doing a bit of juice wont hurt him any further?

hahahah 240 your a legend. Well i hope for Bobs sake what he says is true about the majority of bodybuilding fans not visiting boards because this guy constantly digs a deeper hole for himself. Dude seriously i think you should stop posting at least in response to anything 240 has to say, i dont meen to offend but the guy obviously has his wits about him and you seem like you just have something to prove to yourself by constantly trying to prove him worng. Give it up Bob its a no win situation for you.

Don't be so sure about him competing still.

1.  He still has to make it onstage

2.  He'll have to get IFBB clearance to compete

But it appears that I was mistaken in him wanting to compete.  But he's a complete moron if he does because he's risking his life.

well even if he doesn't it shows that he was very seriously contemplating it. I like what someone said on here not long ago that unfortunately stereotypes 98% are gonna hold true hence the term stereotype. Fuck bodybuilders are dumb ::)

OOH this starts out my day nicely. Many years from now, when Chick is an old, embittered man (I know, I know) on his death bed his nurse will hear his last death rattle: twooooooooo-forty. And like Citizen Kane's 'rosebud', people will wonder what it means. Or maybe they won't. Thanks for the smile.

To be honest I don't fully understand what is happening here. In that Tom Prince thread Chick and everyone else agreed that being on a machine for 12 hours/week means that it would be near impossible to build muscle.  What does this say about TP?

Also is he competing naturally? Wouldn't the gear and other "supplements" be too much stress on his other kidney?

I can't believe that a doctor would clear him for this.
