are you kidding? It is still legal in most states to fire someone solely for the reason that they're gay.
regarding state taxes, only Mass and Vermont, Conn and California in the near future.
in almost all states, you don't even have the right to hospital visitation. no automatic inheritance.
can't sponsor your partner for immigration
while many big businesses offer their health insurance to domestic partners, all married couples get it automatically. and all domestic partner insurance is taxed at the federal level as additional income.
there are hundreds of other benefits
The problem is, if you make the gays a "protected class", they'll be just like the blacks... walking arund with a chip on their shoulder looking to sue people at the drop of a hat, and perceiving every slight or thing that doesn't go their way as "it's because I'm gay".
Next thing you know we'll have quotas for hiring and promoting gays and for college admissions!
No thank you, we have enough "protected classes"... the only people who think this is a good idea (besides the gays themselves) are the lawyers! This is a large part of the opposition to gay marriage... the whole agenda, not marriage itself.
How 'bout we offer the gays a deal: we'll let you get married, tax & survivor benefits, etc, the whole ball of wax, just like hetero couples, so long as you forever drop the push to have yourselves declared a "protected class" with special priveleges who can sue people at the drop of a hat like blacks, women, and other groups can? Sounds like a fair deal to me, but it doesn't fit your "agenda", so you'll never accept it.
