What is NABBA?

NABBA is the abbreviation for the National Amateur Bodybuilders Association. It was founded in 1950 in England to give the United Kingdom bodybuilders a unified and strong organization in which to compete, and to give the athletes publicity and recognition. As bodybuilders from countries all over the world began to compete at the Universe, their countries' organizations joined NABBA and NABBA International was formed. NABBA International currently consists of more than 40 active nations making it the second largest world-wide bodybuilding federation.

What is NABBA USA?

NABBA USA is the NABBA organization in the United States and an active member of NABBA International. It was founded in 1992 to provide a fresh and dynamic alternative for bodybuilders here.

  • NABBA USA strives to have divisions for men, women, novice, junior, teenage, masters, grandmasters, collegiate, and couples so everyone can compete

The NABBA USA Code of Ethics

We believe that the sport of bodybuilding is an ideal means for achieving total physical fitness and bodily perfection. It is a constructive force for developing discipline of the mind as well as of the body. We believe that this discipline should find expression not only in good health habits and planned physical exercise, also we believe in clean living, good sportsmanship and in correct and friendly relationships between competitors, officials, and administrators. To meet these ends we publish the following codes of ethics for the guidance of competitors and officials of NABBA USA:

    Competitors

We, the bodybuilders, realizing that our conduct reflects on the good name of the sport of bodybuilding, and realizing the responsibility thereby placed upon us, pledge ourselves:

    1. To fulfill our responsibility to society, to our coaches, and to the officials and administrators of the NABBA USA.
    2. To honor, dignify and support the sport of bodybuilding by competing to the best of our ability, and to be in top shape when giving an exhibition or a seminar.
    3. To respect our opponents on equal terms in the spirit of friendly rivalry and good sportsmanship.
    4. To respect the rules of competition and to observe them honestly in cooperation with the officials.
    5. To accept the decisions of the judges in the spirit of good sportsmanship without descending to selfish recriminations, realizing that those decisions have been made honestly and objectively.
    6. To continue striving for bodily perfection and correct moral principles.
    7. To honor the special trust conferred on us by our participation and representation of our country, and to adhere to the standards of personal conduct expected of us.
    8. To recognize the value of bodybuilding and to promote its future by serving as an example to inspire other young people to participate.
    9. To cooperate with our administrators in the development of high standards, both moral and physical, for the sport of bodybuilding and in the progressive furtherance of the aims of NABBA USA.
    10. To strive to eliminate the use of physique enhancing drugs such as anabolics and diuretics in the sport.

    Officials

We, the officials, realizing that our actions and decisions as judges, etc., reflect on the good name of the sport of bodybuilding, and realizing the responsibility thereby placed upon us, pledge ourselves:

    1. To apply honestly, impartially, and objectively all rules controlling the competition.
    2. To safeguard the interests of all competitors on equal terms.
    3. To cooperate in providing the best possible conditions for the competitions for the benefit of the competitors, officials, and administrators.
    4. To respect the feelings and competitive drive of the bodybuilders, and to make allowances for their heightened emotions in the heat of competition.
    5. To respect the requirements of an effective administration and to cooperate willingly and promptly with the officially-appointed administrators.
    6. To cooperate with the controllers of the competitions by rendering decisions clearly and promptly and in accordance with the requirements of the competition or judging procedure.
    7. To refrain from attempting to influence the decisions of other judges or officials, and to respect their individual opinions and decisions.
    8. To honor the special trust conferred on us by our selection as judges or officials, and to adhere to the standards of personal conduct expected of us.
    9. To cooperate with our bodybuilders and administrators in the development of high standards, both moral and physical, for the sport of bodybuilding and in the progressive furtherance of the aims of the NABBA USA.

    History of NABBA

The first Mr. Universe competition was held in England on June 24th, 1950 with Steve Reeves of the US taking the Mr. Universe title. In the years to follow, the title of Mr. Universe was to be awarded to many of the great bodybuilders of the world including Reg Park, Bill Pearl, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Boyer Coe, Frank Zane, and Chris Dickerson.

Bob Gruskin, the President of NABBA USA, is responsible for bringing NABBA to the United States. Bob attended his first NABBA Universe in 1983 and was so impressed with the efficiency of the organization, its world-wide establishment, and it direction in catering to and having athlete's interests foremost, he took it upon himself to lay the ground work for NABBA USA. In 1992, NABBA USA was official christened, providing athletes with a new opportunity to compete nationally and internationally as an amateur and to qualify for professional competitions.
