Juneteenth (short for “June Nineteenth”) marks the day when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas in 1865 to take control of the state and ensure that all enslaved people be freed. This was early November, so they were talking about Thanksgiving, etc....., and the one guy goes "you celebrating Kwanzaa?", and starts laughing. The other old guy (late 70's) doesn't know what it is, so his friend starts explaining it, his buddy doesn't get it, so he tries again. After about 3 or 4 tries, the one old guy still doesn't get it. Finally the guy that brought it up gets flustered and goes "It's Ni--er Christmas!" as loud as can be.
Boy would I have liked to hear them suss out this "Juneteenth" business ;D.

Juneteenth has been celebrated by black people for decades. Basically, it's to commemorate when black people in certain states were informed that slavery had been abolished.
There wasn't any real push to make it a national holiday, not even during the 8 years of Obama. Only because of this George Floyd crap did this even get the national light of day.
Basically, all the Dems (and squish Republicans) did was give themselves another day off with pay. To my knowledge this only affect government workers.
The last Juneteenth festival I attended was in 1994. Basically it was just a picnic with good food and a softball game. It was on a weekend (as is this one, June 19th). So of course, the politicians gave themselves a paid Friday.

As stated earlier, the celebration has been around for at least 100 years, usually in the form of a glorified outdoor barbecue.
