I think Vince Taylor's success as a pro is limited by - and defined by - the era in which he competed.

He'll be remembered as one of the top guys, in the top era in the sport's history (early 1990s).

However, if he competed TODAY at his peak, he'd be top 2 Olympia without trying.  Unfortunately, he was up against Cormier, Levrone, Ray and Wheeler in their primes, battling for the runner up slots to yates and haney.

I dunno if he'd be top 2 olympia today... certainly top 6... they don't build em like that anymore.

How do you mean he was underrated?  He's won the third most shows, was endorsed even past his prime, and got tons of pub from the time after he broke out his terminator routine for the first time at the O.  In an era with the likes of Haney, Dorian, Flex, Levrone, Labrada, Ray, Flex, Francois, Cottrell, and others I think he got about the right amount of respect and pub (maybe even more because of his likeablility).

I agree with you that he's a great bodybuilder, just not that he was underrated.  Everyone knew they were up against a great competitor who would come in good condition, and win over the crowd.

The guy has the 3rd most wins of all time... yet these other guys (levrone, ray, wheeler, cormier) are almost always mentioned first - and they're from the same era.

Post by: David M on August 16, 2010, 07:53:30 PM
He just went on PBW radio and sounded like he feels betrayed.  He won a million more shows than Rich Gaspari and 3rd most pro wins in history and for some reason no body talks about him as one of the greats.
Is this because of:

A. He really wasn't that good.

B. Race

C. Guys with big mouths like Shawn get more respect than they should.

D. ?

C.

I met Vince at a few shows in the early 2000's. Great guy, humble as can be and sported a classic physique well into his 40's. He is one of the all time greats, no doubt about it.

thats weird, i didnt know he had that many pro wins............for some reason he kinda flies under the radar

i think his age has to do with it too, with the younger generation.....most only know the guys who won the olympia

like after lee haney, no one, who is in their 20-30, know all that many guys who competed back then............rich gaspari wouldnt be talked about as much, and he isnt really, other then he is one of the supplement scam big-wigs shyster criminals

btw..........who has the most pro wins.........ronnie?

who has the second most?

Maybe he was too humble and not a loud mouth whiner like some others and decided not to open a supplement company. He is probably the one with the best physique from all the pros of his time and age.

He competed 3-4 years ago and looked amazing, I think he placed 11th at '06 O.

Vince is easily one of the 10 or 15 best bodybuilders ever! He looks great even today at 52 while many of his fellow bodybuilders are no longer competitive! Just my 2 cents.

its actually calmed down a little now, (that or guys learned how to use it more subtly)........five or six years ago there were pros walking around with all kind of funky parts

but then again, BFG said the other days hany rambod's whole FST-7 protocol is based on site injections with SEOs..........so who the fuck knows, apparently flex wheeler used to have plastic surgeons do hsi injections,. so there are ways to use it without it looking obvious

In my opinion, Vince Taylor needs to get a bigger ego. He's still looking for approval, even now when most BBing fans DO consider him a legend. The thing I always liked about Rich Gaspari was that he never acted like he wanted your respect, he just went out and got it regardless of what you thought about him. Even in the mid 90s/early 00s when Gaspari's name had faded quite a bit he never bitched about anything, just kept working on his business. Then BOOM, Gaspari Nutrition is a household name in the supplement game, and Rich is baller again.

Vince likes to play the role of the victim, and when you play that role too long people begin to see you as one.

C'mon man, when you act like a champ people talk about you like a champ. All victims get is pity.

you could ask 100 BBing fans who the top 10 bodybuilders of all time were.  Chances are, Taylor wouldn't be on many of their lists.  Guys with far fewer wins - Levrone, Ray, Gaspari, Labrada, Wheeler - would probably be before him on the list.  (Not even counting the O winners)

They are mentioned first because they all were better.  Most of Vince's wins appear to have come from Grand Prix shows.  Only 7 wins at the shows in the states that are more competitive.  (I'm not counting the Masters stuff, cuz the competition isn't the same)  Out of those, only 4 wins would be considered to be wins at the "high caliber" shows.  2 Ironman's, The Arnold, and N.O.C.

Again, great bodybuilder but he got all the attention he deserved and then some.  Having so many wins doesn't mean he was better than those guys, he just competed more and at places he knew he could win.  The other guys mostly went for the big shows with higher quality competition.  I will say though, that he deserves extra props for being able to compete so many damn times though.  Damn! 8)

vince is noted for having some of the best old school calves before this oil BS...so wtf yall talking about?  vince came up orange cty with melvin (underachiever) and shawn (cover boy) via john brown.  he has a lot of wins (mostly 10k shows like cormier and charles) but shawn worked to get his face on the covers...so he is the guy who will be remembered even 10 yrs from now.  john brown always said shawn was the best of the pack, shawn's muscles responded to weights and gear the best.  i think john's guys are about ole school lifting.  it's too bad john brown didnt get flex via the shawn connection...so he may have reached his potential and been a 2-3 MrO because he was right there to beat Ronnie.

Shawn Ray or Kevrone probably could have had more wins, but they didn't spend every year on the pro circuit like Vince, nor did they compete as old as he did.

IMO, if you put peak Levrone and Ray and Wheeler in the lineup with Vince Taylor, he'd be 4th. He's one of the greats, hall of fame caliber no doubt, but he has more wins just because he did more shows.

"Quote from: 240 is Back on August 16, 2010, 04:51:58 PM
The guy has the 3rd most wins of all time... yet these other guys (levrone, ray, wheeler, cormier) are almost always mentioned first - and they're from the same era."

Damn!

Does this mean I helped you to see the light?   :P

Add in peak Haney, Francois, Dillet, Nasser, Yates, and probably a few others and he is lucky to be top 10 in an O lineup with him and everyone else on point during his day.

Maybe, but he's not the one who's begging for sponsorships, b/c he's the one handing'em out.
bro......vince has twice the personality and twice the physique.....not to mention he was a very entertaining poser on stage......rich has a company now......but he was very much the jerk when i was around him.....then he starts in with his attitude......too much of a cock sucker for me.....sure now he is engaging cause he wants you to buy his supplement line......supplements are a waste of money.....we all know that......i might buy a little protein powder.....but all the other products are garbage......vince would get plenty of sponsors.....like i said......personality and a great physique.....gaspari is a moron.....taylor is a classy rep for the sport.....period!

thats great, what year was it?
you know, these guys are all human, just like you and me, not perfect, sure, they're pros and you'd expect them to act professional, but they're people with opinions...and he is from Jersey...
Gaspari must've been a sight to behold in person back in the day!
the year was 1995......he was a bad mouthing, cry baby.....he talked bad about benfatto.....made fun of paris because bob was gay.....talked shit about dearth and dorian.....and said that the only reason haney won his titles is because rich kicked his butt in the gym....which may be true.....but lee was head and shoulders better than most those fellas......gaspari isn't a very nice guy.....he was always a little touchy......not a great attitude.....just my 2 cents.

Maybe Vince needs to come up with his own line supplements, his own company, and training methods...Call it Vince Taylor's Terminator Line...Makes Them say, "I'll Be Back"

Vince Taylor kinda like the Dan Marino of BBing.

Tons of records, but never won the big one and will be juuuuust outside the conversation of top 5 ever.
