Spent 4 days in Chicago
« on: June 09, 2021, 11:51:46 PM »
Really didn't know what to expect. It's the murder capital of the country. We stayed at the London House off Whacker and Michigan Ave on the river. While I did see some homeless, it was not as bad as downtown Austin. Every place we had reservations for was within walking distance of the hotel. The day and night architectural river tours were quite stunning. We ate at Giordanos for deep dish, Il Porcellino for italian, Chicago Cut Steakhouse..Tzuco French Mexican fusion (whatever the hell that is) and Beatniks. lunches were spent getting the mandatory Chicago Dogs and Italian beef sandwiches in.  At night we passed a plexi glassed in bus stop where a homeless guy had set up a complete bedroom with full size mattress, night stand table etc. It was almost like a department store display.
I'm sure outside of the 2 mile area we stayed in it's a whole different ballgame, but we had zero issues and a great time. Hate that I waited until I was almost 60 to go see it.

What are some places we missed? We did the river tours, Willis Tower, Wrigley Field, Soldier Field, Magnificent Mile, Navy Pier.

Chicago ranks 28th among U.S. cities for murder per capita.

I visited twice, once after boot camp and then for the 1990 Olympia.  I enjoyed it, though I didn't go beyond the Olympia venue and hotel in '90.

The last time I went to Denver I took a walk a few blocks from my hotel and immediately regretted it - the seediness increased with every block away.  You followed an itinerary, so I think you did well.  When I took my youngest three to NYC I had everything planned in advance.  I would have liked to take my kids to my old neighborhoods, but we would have stuck out as tourists, and I didn't want that.

Would you go back to Chicago?  Walking along Lake Shore Dr. was amazing.

The miracle mile area is awesome.  Once in Chicago I’m walking down the street. Right near Giordanos.  This Tesla stops with loud music playing. A smoking hot babe steps out of the driver seat. Leaves the door opening with music playing and starts dancing for like two minutes.  The song ends. She gets back in and keeps driving.  It was so strange and sexy.

Or Chi-Town or "THE CHI" as the Urbanites call it.

Wrigley is a must attend if you're a baseball fan.

Then the bar scene afterwards.

But none of this makes any amends for the atrocities that seem to occur daily in that area.

There is almost no crime in the Wrigleyville area, that is mostly young, white, professionals. The crime is on the south and west sides of the City.

And absolutely no one from Chicago ever calls it Chi-town. That term is only used by Eurofags.

If you want to see crime stats of 13%ers killing 13%ers:

Quads gym , awesome place

The old Quads Gym down in Thornton/Calumet City was an amazing place to train when Ed Coan and that group were there.

The new Quads up in Boystown is like working out with a couple hundred Primehomosexual wannabes.

It would be right up your Nectar Rewards alley.

Last visit to Chicago was 2 years ago, to watch the Chicago Marathon. Must have walked 10 miles to see the race, lol. My takeaway about Chicago: it's a great city, the mayor is an asshole, most crime is NOT downtown, they had few homeless people clogging up the streets (and I watched the cops toss a few out as I walked along the river!) and architecturally it has some stellar buildings (I took a riverboat architectural tour)

Contrast Chicago to NY, LA, SF - Chicago wins. I'm going to some bike races there in July and I will have zero problems.

That being said, the city and state of IL are overtaxed up the ass. so much government corruption and I doubt it will ever be fixed.

Chicago is a great place to visit but I would never live there.

Chicago is the weirdest mix of spectacular and dreary. It is true that the crime problems are very localized in certain areas, but sometimes it floods somewhat into other areas. Homelessness is way less a problem that in other cities (wouldn’t you leave in February?). People are the best in US, as is the food. The architecture downtown is best in the world, and the architecture in the vibrant neighborhoods is also pretty amazing, but only on clear, sunny, fresh days. Otherwise, Chicago can feel like the drabbest of the drab on a dumpy day or in the wrong season. Weird combinations in Chicago. And more people are leaving than arriving.

Next time hit up South Shore or Englewood. ;D

Like all massive Cities the majority of the City is relatively safe, but the bad parts are really really bad.

Due to the weather the homeless population is nothing compared to other parts of the US.

I lived in Houston for almost 40 years, only had a handful of bad experiences because i lived in the good areas.

Used to have to visit the 3rd Ward area for a large project we worked on for 3 years. In those 3 years i experienced and saw the craziest things of my life (besides living in Venezuela). People getting robbed in the middle of the day, hookers everywhere, homeless zombie camps, needles all over the ground, kids living in complete filth, locals selling drugs out in the open, heard gunshots many times.

One thing i almost never saw there were white people and Police. They just avoided it unless they got a call.

I got harassed almost every time i went there. I had to walk the project site once a week. Got to the point that getting out of my truck i would look around for 5 minutes first. Carried that G43 every single day. The contractor provided a security escort for everyone. Brothas would just walk up and start talking shit for no reason, looking for trouble, most of them were young too.

Stay out of the White areas and you'll be fine.  Go to the South side and hang out with some of the bros.  Diversity is our strength!

This is the case in every predominantly black area of the country. Contrary to the bullshit that cops are spending the day looking to oppress Black people, they really just want to avoid these areas at all costs. It’s nothing but trouble.
