how essential are deadlifts?  didn't Dexter just start doing them for the first time like 2 years ago?

for back thickness they're superior to any other exercise. 

but i dont do them from the floor anymore...uses way too much glutes and hams now that i can pull alot of weight.  then on leg day im too sore to go heavy.  i just do rack deads, but i still put the bars pretty low

trust me...put any variation of deadlifts in your back routine...and you'll see a difference in a month
