VINCE, Happy 80th .... and many more!

I plan to sit down on this damn machine and tell ya some shit that you most likely heard before and was more than likely involved with.I hope I can do this ASAP and also send a copy to good guy WES also, but I gotta admit that robbing the local casinos of  their ill-gained profits has a priority which I have been winning very slowly but somewhat consistently and almost enough to buy a monthly MTL bus pass.

So stand by to stand by for some interesting shit which you may  already may be aware of  but have forgotten due to old age.... Respectfully stated of course!

PS.... Most of my lifetime stories are dumb as shit , BUT always TRUTHFUL and I think that we should leave them for prosperity before passing to greener pastures.

Vince, Don't tell anyone, but I once owned BENJI before he became a movie star.

My hair is combed, my Uber has arrived, and an empty chair at a BJ table awaits
my assault.

Happy Birthday ... a few dayz late!

PS.... Is Ray Beaulieu still on this planet?

Gambling, absolute fruitless endeavor for 99.9% of the population. I'd compare gambling to a meth user, just retarded!

True, but most are never successful financially anyway.

True, but most are never successful financially anyway.

My uncle has gambled and lost in his lifetime, at least close to $500,000k, if not more. He’s been gambling for close to 55-60 years, often routinely gambling 500-1000k per month religiously. He didn’t make that good of a living either, which is why my aunt had to work 2-3 jobs.

A few weeks ago he told me he was up $2,000k from winning online. I said “no, you’re not up. You are still in deficit of $498,000k.” But in the gamblers mind, the past losses don’t count. It’s only what’s in front of them.

Yup... My inlaws like to go to Casinos. They would do it small time (and just for fun I guess), but still blow a grand just to walk around, drink, smoke, hang at Casinos, etc.
My wife's Ma would say "I won 200.00 on a slot-machine. I'd say similar "Nope, you lost 800.00".

They stopped going now that older, have COPD and other health issues, but I used to find their way of thinking to be comical...

My birthday present to myself is to renew my interest in designing and building new gym equipment. I bought a used pec deck several years ago but it needed a repair and I finally got around to starting this project. Not so easy since a lever that gets the pads into position had snapped off the steel rod that it pivoted on. Curses....big job. Then I found bent rod ends on both arms that pull the pads forward. Curses. What was I thinking buying a broken piece of gym equipment when I already have a good pec deck in my possession?!

I have several biceps machines with me and 3 are operational. I decided to modify the position of the pads on one machine and it took me hours to get my welder up and running again. Then I did some cutting off with an angle grinder and it brought back memories of dust and smoke in the factory. I need better ventilation. I hate getting my hands dirty and end up washing them quite often. Welding is one of the black trades!

I want to build another triceps machine. Already have a modified Nautilus machine that I can do a variation of lying extensions like Larry Scott recommended. I wouldn't mind finding a Medx triceps machine but they are as rare as hens teeth. It is quite a challenge to make something new. Nowadays I will build it for my exclusive use.

I do have an unfinished project...build a machine like the Nautilus Duo Squat but with a different cam and with two weight stacks. If I can incorporate a mechanism to bring the weight stacks down faster than gravity it will be suitable for sprinters and other athletes to train on.

About training arms. I procrastinate all the time. Always do the minimum and miss workouts. I know I should be training arms twice a week but I have a torn biceps and also tender elbows. I damaged them back in 1965 after visiting York and talking to Steve Stanko. He claimed he used to do pullovers on a bench with 250 pounds. I got up to that poundage but got sore elbows from the effort. A good lesson learned. Now before training triceps I have to warm up carefully. 40 plus reps with 3 plates then 30 with 4, 20 with 5, and so on up to several maximum sets with 11 plates X 10 reps. With tender elbows this is a sort of madness. One of those things about hypertrophy. No easy way to get big.

Talking about getting bigger arms. Well, I twice got them to just a bit over 18 inches cold. First time was back in 1999 but an injury ended the progress. Only the last 10 or so years I have done 2 exercises for arms. My biceps-supinator for biceps and the modified Nautilus triceps machine for triceps. Both effective exercise but I can't do more workouts because of nagging soreness in the right elbow area. The muscles that do the pronation get inflamed. So I use my hands like I was doing a karate chop. My triceps are the biggest they have ever been. Biceps are lacking because of the torn right one. I did that one winter day trying to do a maximum deadlift. Got 510 pounds almost up but not fully. The Pope, a bloke in my gym, was beside me urging me on. Silly me I kept going and tore the right supination muscle. Curses. Had an operation a couple of years later but there was nothing they could do. When I started lifting weights I was told to hold the bar with one hand under and one hand over the bar. Guess which hand was under the bar? Yep, my right. I should have kept both hands over the bar and I probably wouldn't have torn it. That is why I tell bodybuilders to avoid heavy dead lifts. I can't see that they do much good and surely they do untold damage which you will find out when you get old.

Funny thing about being 80 is that I don't feel any different over the decades. My body is okay but my flexibility isn't as good. I used to be on the university gymnastics teams at McGill and UBC. In recent years my waist has expanded and now it is an effort to tie my shoes! I remember doing those fitness tests in high school and wondered how anyone could fail any of the exercises. Well, it is easy to fail the touch the toes if you don't watch your diet. Oh, I can still do it but not so easy.

Another thing about getting older is when to finally get around to doing things. Like unclutter my place. Sell some things. Do a will. Do things on time and not on the last day.

Talk about gambling. I knew this single mother who was living in a government home with her daughter. Her uncle who was a mechanic died and she inherited his home and even all the nice tools. I visited her after she was in her new home. Nice place near Kiama south of Sydney. All the tools were on the wall along with a work bench, etc. The kind of setup guys only wish they could have. Anyway, this woman wasn't a girlfriend but I found out that many years later she had put her home through the poker machines that are in a sports clubs in Australia. She lost the lot and her daughter had to find her own place and ignore her mother's requests for loans. I shake my head at how anyone could do that.

I have a brother who plays the horses. Can't say he was successful but he told me not many people know how to read the forms like he could!

Thanks, Wes. I never could understand how you always got teased about being old when Stunt and me are way older. Not that it is any honour being 80. I outlived Vince Gironda and Steve Reeves. Steve was so healthy we all expected him to live well over 90.

Vince I think they actually thought it bothered me.....all those young "punks" are now mostly in the 50`s or older.......when you are young, you feel like your`re bulletproof but as we both know Vince the more that times moves on......it seems to move with lightning like speed.

Sounds like my aunt, she has lost over $300k in the last 5 years. So much that her husband divorced her so his money wouldn't get wasted. It was crazy. He had saved a lot of money over his career working at a bank; she never saved a dime. One day just starts gambling, gets addicted to it and blows over $100k in one year. My uncle didn't know about it at first. Since the divorce she has gone broke, works as a substitute school teacher at 78 years old. Her ex-husband is retired with a good chunk of money and fishes every day.

This engineer i worked for many years ago was amazing at playing cards. He would go to the casino every 2-3 weeks and make $3-4k playing cards. He was smart enough to stop when he was down, never gone deep into a loss, he would just quit and come back another time. The way he saw it was that he enjoyed it and his wife went to all the shows while he played cards, so it was a free vacation with a little profit. I remember he used to try and count cards during lunch, had a system for blackjack that he used that seemed to work.

Steve Stanko did pullovers with 250 pounds. I met him in York, Pa, in 1965. Would you believe I went there with a pile of articles I had written. I favoured Hoffman over Weider in those days. York were the good guys and Weider were the bad guys. Both were bullshitters as I later found out. Anyway, I met Terry Todd, PhD, who was editor of Strength and Health magazine. I gave him my articles to read. The next day he returned them with some grammar corrections but said they weren't interested. So I approached John Grimek in his office of Muscular Development. John always wore sun glasses because he damaged an eye doing an exercise with those chest expanders. He read a few of the articles and told me maybe Weider might be interested. That ended my ambition to be on the staff of a bodybuilding magazine. What the hell was I thinking. Those hacks don't make much and have to kiss the owner's ass instead of writing with integrity. John refused to let me take a photo of him.

There was a national powerlifting contest in York while I was there and also the Mr USA contest. I think Bob Gajda won that. There was a big, black bodybuilder in the audience who many thought was Sergio Oliva. Nope was a guy from New York. I took some photos of him posing outside the hall where the lifting was taking place. I got some frowns from some officials who passed by. Those were the days when Mr America contestants had to submit to an interview and also demonstrate some athletic ability. That requirement saw many lackluster guys win the very coveted Mr America contest from 1959 to 1964 or so. The AAU Mr America was second only to the NABBA Mr Universe in those days. After I took a roll of 36 slides I gave the film to the bodybuilder. Now what photographer would do that?

Bob Hoffman had a great gym at the York Barbell premises. Guests were allowed to use the gym while visiting. They used to call York, "Muscletown" but I didn't see many good physiques at the shopping center I visited! Over many years I had read Bob Hoffman's editorials where he sounded very pompous. One day while he was walking through the gym in his sports jacket I called out about how he had a fat gut! I always said what was on my mind. I still get in trouble even today! Bob stopped and invited about 5 of us training there to gather around him. What happened next was unbelievable! He took off his sports jacket, tie and shirt. He stood there in his white singlet. He asked us to observe. He inhaled a big breath and then exhaled. He kept exhaling for perhaps 15 or more seconds. When he finished he did a vacuum of his abdominals and got a guy there to touch his abdomen to see how hard it was. He dressed and off he went. The next day John Terpak, the operations manager for York, reprimanded me in the gym and told me not to insult Bob again or I wouldn't be able to train there. Shit, I felt very bad about what I did. Later in the shopping center I met Jules Bacon, Mr America in the early 40's. He told me not to worry about upsetting Bob because he was a windbag. That made me feel much better. One day Bob gathered all the visitors in the gym to listen to his tale about a weightlifting contest he entered many years ago. The night before the contest he told us he had sex for hours with some woman. The next day at the contest he clean and jerked 275 pounds. The moral of the story was that he might have done more had he not had sex for hours and hours. I was told Bob was notorious for telling those stories. We all shook our heads later thinking he was a sad guy to relate that shit! Very amusing to hear just the same.

Anyway, I did talk to Steve Stanko who was a heavyweight USA champion weight lifter in the old days. He had torn a biceps but when he showed me his arms I couldn't see much damage at all. He mentioned his pullover poundage and when I returned to Kamloops I started doing heavy pullovers. Maybe it might help increase the rib cage? I got up to 250 pounds but had to give that movement up because of very sore elbows. It took almost a year of very light triceps pressdowns to rehabilitate the triceps so I could train them heavily again. I always had a slow gradual warmup before using heavy weights.

You look like you could pick Frank Zane up and put him in a garbage bin. My hero Jack Lalanne lived to mid 90s. You have many more years to go.

Frank Zane turned 80 a few months before me. I have seen some videos of him in recent years and was astounded at how puny he looked. He looks like a typical grandpa who never lifted a weight in his life. Perhaps he suffered injuries to his shoulders that made it difficult to use heavy weights. Heck my arms are still over 17 1/2 inches cold and I am stronger in triceps than ever before. My calves are over 17 1/2 inches without any training. If I go on a hike carrying my back pack of heavy lenses they will be over 18. I have put on too much safety fat but my muscles are still okay. I hate training legs but should do more because most older guys experience atrophy in their thighs.

The scientists all claimed that old men lose muscle size as they age. Not true. You can trigger hypertrophy if you train right and do it consistently over the years. I look at Arnold and wonder how he lets himself be a shadow of his former self.

You are one of the only Getbiggers to have ever won a contest and you get ripped for it. :D

Because he picked his own judges.

Because he picked his own judges.

I picked 15 judges from current and past bodybuilders. 8 showed up including Chuck Sipes. I was surprised I won but most believed it was a fair decision...except Ken Rivard who came second. He refused to be in the top 3 winners photo after the contest. He never competed again as far as I know. I got 6 votes for 1st, Ken got one and Philippe got one.

We both trained at Western Gym in downtown Vancouver in a skid row area of the city. We were mates but not friends. 4 months before the contest he asked if I was entering. I told him I was going to win it. He laughed in my face. From that day I got serious. Decided to take Dianabol...two tablets a day. I also trained in secret wearing a track suit so nobody knew what I looked like. I practiced posing 15 minutes every day. Ken arrived with no tan and and didn't know how to pose. He won best arms, chest and back, I won best legs and best poser, and Walter Milner won best abs and most muscular. I don't recall seeing Ken again after that contest. Then in January 1971 I emigrated to Sydney, Australia so never enjoyed being Mr Canada in my home country. Well, not for long anyway. When I returned in 1980, 87, 2000 and 2004 the bodybuilders had no idea who I was.

Ray Beck was the promoter. He was running two gyms and had a store selling supplements and equipment. He got my wife Roz and me to do most of the work for the contest. Pick judges, select and order trophies, do the advertising, etc. I appeared on TV doing my posing routine during a wrestling program.
