Magazine wars? I mean it's a big issue but who wants to hear pro-Weider guy Chick blast MD for an hour.  Dont get Shawn Ray on there or we'll never hear an opinion.  If Romano shows up someone is going to have a meltdown.

Dan should "accidentally" hang up on Shawn when he starts rambling.

God, that man loves to talk!

This should be an interesting way for us in the peanut gallery to learn more about the writers.  I'd suggest a few things:

1) Dan is awesome at this, but Bob is not - I would ask that the hosts remain very very neutral this week during the debate.  Do not offer opinions on the mag wars.  Otherwise it'll quickly become a 2 on 1, as Bob and Team FLEX take on MD. (See: Lee priest radio piece)   If Bob can - even just this week - step back and just ask awesome questions, and each side receives equal time to respond, it'd be awesome, and it'd be true journalism!

2) Now, for Bob himself, I'd like to ask him to tell us this:
Please tell us the difference between 2 Bbing mags and 2 Bbing federations.  Please tell us why it's A-okay for the sport to have two magazines, but two federations is very bad for the sport.  Why is it cool to divide up the BBing audience into segments for marketing publications, but dividing up the federations (mass=ifbb and aesthetics=pdi) is a terrible idea you've argued so vehemently against?

3) Finally, at the end, I would design a structure and earmark 3 minutes so that each guest can hae 20 seconds to make ONE statement which summarizes his points and positions.  Tell them ahead of time so they can write it down.  The radio show is awesome but closure is sometimes a little awkward.  i'd like to hear each person have EXACTLY 20 seconds to share his composed thoughts with the listeners so that we walk away with the impression of a series of thinking points, not 6 guys yelling over each other as we run out of time.

Just have a cage match between the Weider athlethes and MD's.

don't rush him.
We are starting him off slowly.  Today a couple of mags, maybe next month a book.
It will be an Archie Book, but it is still a book.

I am starting a collection to buy him a speak and spell, so cut the guy some slack.

You also have the NABBA, the WABBA, and lot of other fun groups.  But as with all fields, there are always two names that are known.  Coke & Pepsi.  Nike & Reebok.  Hertz & Avis. XBOX & PS2.  Dems and Repubs.  FLEX & MD. Come on man, this is mktg 1, the Law of Duality.  In the long run, every market becomes a 2-horse race.   Scribbles, call me up.  You teach me to talk to fitness girls, I'll school you on the laws of mktg :)

Poor taste in the title of your show...on the five year anniversary of 9/11 to say this is a "war" is a mockery of a very real war that was launched on america.  >:(

I have faith that Bob can show restraint and that the questions can be 50/50 and the time can be 50/50.  I think that since they know there is a potential conflict of interest, they'll go out of their way to avoid this in order to maintain journalistic integrity.

If they do, people here and everywhere will give them props, and IMO they'll take a step forward.  If Bob grandstands and speaks his potentially biased piece each time, the split may be a 66/33 split.

I'll say it again - if this is billed as Magazine wars, the job of the media is to observe and not influence.  Let's see a 50/50 split!

we're not talking about your hardon for the "war on terror". Talking simple terms comparing two guys talking smack in a subculture industry vs planes being flown into our tallest buildings on the same day 5 years ago is much different. two very different "wars". show some respect for the real war people are fighting because of the events on 9/11, not some pissing parade between inflated egomaniacs.

"potential" conflict of interest? when you have FLEX magazine's logo as one of your sponsors there is clearly more then a "potential" conflict there boss.

why isn't steve coming on the show to discuss?

PS - let me know if you need some tips on talking to fitness women, I'll be down in West Palm Beach the week after the Olympia if you want to sign up for a couple classes. ;)

I live media and politics man.

Despite the fact that each show will be tailored to its target demo, there has to be a modicum of neutrality or the show hosts lose their ability to call themselves journalists and they become entertainers.

Lou Dobbs is a journalist.  O'Reilly is not.  Now, let's not kill this topic with politics.  Which fitness girls you meeting?  You do know that's arvilla's stomping grounds.

There will only be a conflict if the hosts let there be a conflict.

They can deliver a solid gold debate in which each side is asked 5 adversarial questions specific to their position, and each side has equal time to respond.  I think they will, and I am looking fwd to it.

For starters, you'll be glad to know that Mr. Blechman has been invited to appear on the show.  In fact, all "parties" know that they are encouraged and welcome to appear.  -- The radio show has maintained good relations with both magazines.  John Romano has been very supportive of PBW in his MD column....and we have welcomed him on the show 3 or 4 times.  Flex Magazine has also provided some tremendous support for the show.  We maintain open communication with all parties and we ALWAYS encourage their participation.

Now that's some funny politically correct B.S. right there. Your sponsor is Flex Magazine and your co-host is under contract with, oh yeah, AMI, publisher of Flex Magazine. You can't have it both ways. You're insulting our intelligence here.

HaterSpice,

You are a creative guy, but you're often quick to pass judgment before things happen.  I could see some criticism should it turn into an AMI commercial or a bashfest... but if each side has equal time and the hosts are not opinionated, the show sponsor doesn't have to influence the show's content.

You're right 240. I am a creative guy, and a bright guy. It's not about hate, just keepin' it real. Take the blinders off. Like the Lee Priest appearance was fair and balanced, right? You remember the 2 on1 where Lee literally could not get a word in edgewise.

I cited that example myself as a way the debate should NOT be run.  I was very vocal in my unhappiness about the way the argument was Bob&Shawn vs. Lee, with Dan being a neutral journalist and Bob just firing away.  I am fine it that is the announced format and bob/Shawn's combined time = lee's time.  but Shawn just talked nonstop and seriously took up more than his share, IMO.

I think that if they come with some tough questions for each side, let the sides ask each other Qs, and give everyone time to say their piece at the end, it could be one of those radio segments we're talking about next year.

If it turns into a Chic soliloquy, interrupted occasionally by some guys muttering at each other about who did what and when, it will be less memorable.

I can appreciate your skeptisism.  But, to answer your question - YES, we "CAN" have it both ways. -- The facts do not lie.  Romano has been featured on our show 3 or 4 times (Fact).  MD covers us in their magazine (Fact). Steve Blechman has received several invitations to appear on the radio show (Fact).  -- Don't get me wrong, you are completely justified for feeling the way you do.  It's hard for some people to comprehend that we are making every effort to showcase opinions and perspectives from ALL camps.

See 240, we agree how bad and unfairly run the Lee show. However, Dan was not being a "neutral journalist". Since he is the HOST of the show, neutrality would have been shown by him stopping the double team and making sure that Lee had a chance to speak. That didn't happen and all you have to do is listen to the replay if anyone is delusional enough to think otherwise.

But let's agree on one thing. If anyone is talking about a lousy segment of an internet radio show next year, that person must submit to therapy and we'll all take up a collection to help that person get a life! LMAO

As for you Dan, whatever you may say, you can't escape that Flex is your sponsor (FACT). Bob is your co-host, an AMI paid athlete (FACT). Romano being on the show to talk about the Olympia judging and a 'roundtable" snoozefest doesn't change the prior two facts. (FACT). And that same guy, Romano, doing a piece in his column proves nothing and doesn't change facts 1 and 2. (FACT).

You really think they'll make it less than a 50/50 split?  I think they'll do the right thing and split the time evenly.  I know, it's a little less of everyone's favorite guy holding rusty's trophy, but a 50/50 split on talking time would be great for fans who wanna hear both sides of the issue.

I will update times each break.

Also, I will not be recording Bob's time for AMI - unless he is arguing the merits of their case.  Any time he starts presenting their side, they get clocktime added.  Same if he chooses to give MD's side of things.

of course not.  but it's just a little tool to see if they give about the same amount of time to both sides of this argument.  Some have said they might not, or that Bob Chic, an AMI bedfellow, might skew things a bit.  Sponsorship issues too.

This will be a way to see exactly how it's split.

Which is exactly why watchdog groups like the Pencil Peanut Gallery exist.  When the masters pro turned into a gift exchange in which no one pulled Rusty's name, the peanut gallery jumped into action.  When a Jersey Princess was given a gift fit for a Wolf, the Peanut gallery was there.

Tonight we shall keep them honest.

Attention to all:

Due to the fact the the radio show is hosted by an AMI athlete - and giving preference to AMI and Flex Magazine - Muscular Development has hijacked the show - and it will not heard today.

The war has began - and the AMI run radio show has now being held hostage by MD. If they give MD a fair shake on the radio - the tape will be released to the general public for their listening pleasure.

There is a one hour time delay to get rid on any unflattering remarks against AMI, and to put more negatie remarks against MD.  Let's get it going boys - we want it live and uncensored.

I don't think it's the end of the world either...the question is...does it LEND anything to the magazine?

Does it add any value to have 15 pages devoted to some porno chick? Columns that have nothing to do with BB? Sex cartoons?

As I said...they have cleaned up their act considerably over the last few years, but they need to stay focused on BB, first and foremost.

As a MD writer and a part time reader of many of the magazines (bathroom time permitting), i do think that many of the articles on training, the science side, nutrition (Alway, Fleck in MD; Jim S in Flex) have a lot of merit. All of the magazines need to spend more time educating all body builders the importance of health check ups and what tests to be done at what age and especially if you use gear. I would also think that since so many Pros and a few others are so focused on BB and forget to learn about a second career or investing, that there is merit to a small financial and career oriented column - to remind people that life does not revolve around the squat rack or the EZ curl bar.

Anyway, back to MNF.

I've talked to Don on the matter...from day one.

I STILL dont like the idea of Don taking the stage again, personally.

My personal feelings aside....as his rep, I did all I could to make it a possibility for Don to compete again...thats my job.

As for "ragging" on MD...Shawn has his opinion, as do I, etc....John isn't in charge of the content of the mag...he himself may agree or disagree with the format...apparently someone else within the company had the same outlook, as the look and content of the mag has changed 180 degrees on numerous occasions (as I said on the show)...

Ever notice that my responses are in kind to yours? If you were just act normal, 240...you wouldn't get half the shit you do. Instead of trying to "Pwn" someone every time you post...why not try and make a point, or contribute to the discussion somehow?

bob, i only give you heat because you made up some horrible shit about me and never apologized or took it back.  I have quit beating on everyone here, i've given olive branches to just about everyone man.  It's just, you use the word 'fool' to address anyone with a differing opinion from yours, and you called me a horrible thing based upon a damn AOL proxy block.  And my offer to take a poly for $10k still stands on that.

That's why I still rip on your.  I leave everyone else alone.  And if you can ever apologize for the horrible shit you lied about, I'll leave you alone too.

Don't make up guys, your tantrums equate to Kamili and Titus a few years back. It's kinda Jerry Springerish..

For real, if I made a horrible claim like that, and I was proven wrong, I would say something like "damn man, that was kinda a big thing to accuse, and yea, the AOL proxy stuff makes sense.  Sorry bout that one" and do the right thing.

It was never proven you DIDN'T post it either...only that it was possible that someone else POSSIBLY could have had thee same proxy, etc.

I'm sure it was just a big coincidence that YOU were the one who posted it on Getbig...YOU were the one who was also posting on BB.com, and YOU also had the same IP as the person who posted it....

My bad, 240...we'll just chalk it up to circumstantial coincidence...

AOL uses proxy blocks.  At any given time, you might have 20 to 100 users on BBing.com using the same IP block.  They just send all the packets at once.

That punk was using some program which posted something like 200 posts a minute, just unreal.  And we were battling back then bob. So you know if I had known how to do it, it surely wouldn't have been that redneck drivel.  It would have been a very witty baghdad bob image of course :)

All is well tho!

Right?  My King Ron Championship fund is already earmarked for a nice baby swing should I win, as much as I would have preferred a bottle of jaeger and a few lap dances.

Huh?  Do I believe there should be a new 911 investigation? Sure.  Can you tell you 20 glaring holes in the official story which point to complicity of groups outside of ONYA, sure.  But they want us to save that stuff for the general boards.

You talked to Don on the matter but wanted him to guest pose, not compete... You say on here you STILL don't like the idea of him taking the stage, yet on the show you state you look forward to seeing him to taking the stage, which is it? As his rep you did all you could to keep him off the stage and we all saw it here and heard you on the show....your show coined it "comeback ambitions", so you must have it right here and not on your show, there is no comeback.

Tonight I will be using two stopwatches to see if indeed, both sides of the magazine aisle receive equal time.  I will stop both watches whenever men speak over each other, and I will post times.  I encourage you all to do the same.  Show is starting-

What is pathetic is that Chick and/or Shawn have no clue how to run a magazine, how to obtain quality content for the magazine and add to that have the audacity to criticize MD for changing formats over the years. Not only do these small-minded folk not understand the influence of being a public company (when Twinlab owned MD, before Steve Blechman bought the publishing arm of Twinlab), but they also do not acknolwedge the fact that there "own" Muscle and Fitness and Flex also have changed formats and content since AMI bought it as well as over the years. If you remember, back when Muscle Media was up and coming, it rankled Joe Weider and he had Flex try to be more edgy (never cam close) while adding some science to MnF (which in academia is known as Muscle and Fiction).

So, here we have AMI/Weider Publishing lackees bashing John R and MD AFTER John is not on the internet radio show...wow, so smooth there boys. Man-up and note that the more magazines that cover the Olympia and promote the BB's, the better chance that the BB's can make some money and have a career.

dknole, agreed.  Why would Bob and Shawn keep referencing whipped cream, naked chicks, and overt sexual content in MD?  Was'nt that shit like 4 years ago or something?  Talk about coming onto the show with an agenda to try to take some steam out of MD.  Once Romano was gone the show became nothing more than more AMI bullshit.  This is getting old.

Should we expect anything different from two gents that made/make their livelyhood off of Weider/IFBB/AMI? What are they going to do next year when Ben Weider owns the Olympia again and sells the marketing rights to MD or Muscletech?

What did anybody expect?  Everytime anyone gets riled up for PBW they get let down.  When King came all he rambled about was suing people, blah blah blah, instead of what he said he was going to do (bring Shawn Ray out).  Lets think about it for a second.  These are two magazines!!!!!!!  I got amped up about it a week or so ago but when I came back to earth I thought "Who really cares?".  I mean MD is ad after ad after ad.  Palumbo telling idiot fans how to ruin they're physique and health and a couple mediocre articles from athletes talking the same bullshit they said last year around Olympia time. "Eating clean, dialed in, on schedule."

Flex is worse.  Whoever they're recently signed athlete is, is shoved down our throat for 8 months leading up to the O.  Then they actually print odds on who will win, is there any question anyway?  In closing who cares?  If the magazines arent competing to make the product any better than shut the fuck up.

If not for "the magazines" how do you think bodybuilding would have gotten as far as it has today?  there was no internet when the Weiders began.  So now because the net is here, suddenly print should be discounted as having no merit?  Wrong.  The net may be getting info out faster etc., but for the time being there is still a place for magazines.

As far as the editorial slant of Flex and MD, they both put out a product that they believe will sell...Remember, they are in BUSINESS here.  Just because you do not appreciate the article content they have does not mean that everyone feels the same way.  If that was the case, then the mags would have no sales, zero ad dollar support and would find themselves out of business.

Yeah, their place is redundancy, obsolescence, and the reporting of 2-month-old "news".

In 2006, a paper magazine is about as useful as a buggy whip.

Bob, that was really awesome how you had the scoop all along on the Don Long scoop.  Question though - why did you deny it for four days and mock those who posted it (um, me), then when FLEXonline pwned you like a crackhead's VCR, you disappeared for 4 days?

Was the part of the master plan?  if so, good work champ!

You don'texpect Bob to actually admit he was wrong

He's wrong so much, and makes a complete ass of himself so often, that if he admitted it every time it occurred, he'd have nothing to say but negative things about himself. People would think he had no self-esteem at all.
