Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez praised the leadership shown by New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern on the issue of gun control in the wake of the deadly Christchurch mosque shootings by a white supremacist.

Ardern announced that, as a result of the far-right terror attack which left 50 people dead and dozens more injured, some critically, New Zealand will ban a swathe of what she called “military-style” weapons and parts that allow other guns to be converted.

Ocasio-Cortez, a New York Democrat and rising star in the party, drew a comparison with the lack of action on gun control in America after mass shootings, such as the Sandy Hook Elementary School Massacre which killed 26, of which there is an epidemic in the country.

Former DNC chairman Ed Rendell (D-PA) advised 2020 Democratic presidential candidates to look toward the center and not to the far left.

"I think all of a sudden, the 2020 election went from a slam dunk for Democrats to something where we're going to have trouble beating this guy because he's going to make Democratic socialism swing to the left, which I don't think is real, but he's going to make it into the issue," the former governor told CNN on Thursday.

Senate rejects Ocasio-Cortez’s Green New Deal in 57-0 vote blasted as a ‘sham’ by Dems

The Green New Deal failed to pass a procedural vote in the Senate Tuesday, with Democrats slamming the GOP motion as a “sham” and with two exceptions voting “present” in protest.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell put the ambitious plan to create jobs and improve the environment to a vote to force Democrats to take a public stand on the measure and try to divide the party’s moderates and progressives.

The final vote was 57 against and no one for the plan, with 43 Democrats voting present.

Red State Democratic Sens. Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona voted no.

”I could not be more glad that the American people will have the opportunity to learn precisely where each one of their senators stand on the ‘Green New Deal’: a radical, top-down, socialist makeover of the entire US economy,” McConnell tweeted.

Joe Manchin of West Virginia quite often votes with Republicans and even though she is still very early in her senate career, it appears Kyrsten Sinema will reach across the aisle more often than many of her fellow party members.

Both are vulnerable in their respective states come election time so they want to have that voting record avoid consistently moving too far to the left.
