Buying a collectible car before it becomes one
« on: December 02, 2014, 05:01:01 AM »
A long time ago I was close to buying a BMW Z1 for 3k, now they are highly sought after and can fetch 17k plus and I think in 20/25 years time (in time for our retirement) they should be even cooler and more expensive.

Right now I see the old shape Z3 as a potential contender, thinking of buying one for 2/3k and dumping it in a garage til I am 60 then bring that bad boy out.

Is this something anyone thought about? any other cars I may consider?

"Pickling" a car is trickier than most people think.  You have to drain all the fluids while still protecting the moving parts from corrosion.  Quite a lot involved really.  You have to remove quite a bit and store it sealed.  Chances are good that down the line everything will be seized up.

10 or so years ago Sierra cosworths (original whale tail model) could be picked up for 5 grand or so and now decent ones are fetching 20k plus, as more time passes and they become more rare perhaps the less sought after sapphire cosworth which is still available cheaply will follow the same path

This is the most egregiously trashed Bentley Mark vi in the world.  I am ashamed to admit that this was done here in the ‘States.  Before anyone says, “That's a Rolls”...in addition to the obvious travesty committed on the car, the describing text reveals that it is a 1949 Bentley with a Rolls grill glued on.

Tough one to say.
I'd probably be looking at the 8 series bmw.
Some of the early 2000 Maserati or aston martin's.
Other than that possibly cars like the rs focus, / escort
Lancia intergrale, the four wheel drive hot hatch / saloons etc.

Would it need pickling if I drove it a tiny bit twice or once a month? this way the engine gets a warm and a spin.

I also have a Jaguar XJS in mind, I really think we are at the end of its tail now. 10 years from now and its a solid collectable.

Caterham won't appreciate in value but it's a cheap track car that is also road drivable. A 15k or 20k well maintained 911 is prob best bet for price appreciation if it is suitable for the classic car races. U wd have to research the spec on those though as it makes a huge diff in value.

Why would he buy a car as an investment then take it to a race/track day?

Highly collectable cars are stored away kept in mint, bog standard condition and trailered to the odd show, not driven under the harshest conditions possible around a race track you fucking clown, a few hard track days could wreck a classic car and it will be far from collectable.
Do you ever see a concourse winner at a track day?

Listen u prick. A Ferrari that has been kept indoors and Ferrari serviced etc is a 'highly collectible car'. That costs a lot more than 15k. A 911 that will be eligible for classic car races and can race will go up in value as similar cars get written off... And yeah it will be thrashed on the track.

its hard to tell

sme quirky  cars that dont catch on can become cult cars

anything with race pedigree like cosworth

for instance a limited edtion focus rs 500 will appreciate

your best bet is a morgan if you can find ne their residules are bullet proof

they can never build enough to keep up with demand

the r34 skiline gtr v spec if you can find an original will become a very sought after car

early porche 911 turbos as well

Your talking utter nonsense you obese cu nt, take 2 of the exact same car, one concourse the other a track car, the concourse example will always be worth far more

that is an abstract idiotic statement. people dont race rare cars like ferraries or lambos. they race scarce sports cars like 911s.

But the fact remains if you choose a car for an investment the last thing you do is hammer it around a track

Nissan Figero is a dead cert future classic. If you can get one from one of the UK specialists that has been reupholstered, serviced and any niggles ironed out, then they would be a good bet for ten years time.

But its a collectible investment and limited in numbers.

It costs telephone numbers to buy and maintain a true sports car, than a ford escort pinto you know mate.

Exactly.

Nobody is stupid enough to have fun with a $30,000,000 automobile.
