U.S. Launches Cruise Missiles Against Qaddafi's Air Defenses

The U.S. Navy fires the first U.S. Tomahawk cruise missiles against Libyan leader's Muammar al-Qaddafi's air defenses Saturday, a military source tells Fox News.

The U.S. military strikes clear the way for European and other planes to enforce a no-fly zone designed to ground Qaddafi's air force and cripple his ability to inflict further violence on rebels, U.S. officials said.

Hours after Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton attended an international conference in Paris that endorsed military action against Qaddafi, the U.S. was poised to kick off its attacks on Libyan air defense missile and radar sites along the Mediterranean coast to protect no-fly zone pilots from the threat of getting shot down.

"We have every reason to fear that left unchecked, Qaddafi will commit unspeakable atrocities," Clinton said.

Allies launch first attacks against Gadhafi forces in Libya

BENGHAZI, Libya — French President Nicolas Sarkozy said allied air forces had gone into action on Saturday over Libya and were preventing Moammar Gadhafi's forces from attacking the rebel city of Benghazi.

A French official said a French fighter jet had fired on a Libyan military vehicle, in a first reported strike in the international campaign to enforce a no-fly zone.

French Defense Ministry spokesman Thierry Burkhard said the strike was reported around 1645 GMT Saturday (12:45 pm ET). The target was confirmed as a military vehicle, but it was not clear what kind, Burkhard said. He said no hostile fire on the French jet had been reported.

Russia deeply regrets the Western decision to go to war with the Gaddafi regime in Libya.

A diplomatic spokesman said in Moscow Saturday that this hasty action on the Libya resolution of the UN Security Council must be pursued in a way that does not harm foreign diplomats or Libyan civilians who find themselves in the war zone.

He also reiterated the need for a solution that is achieved through peaceful dialogue between the Libyan sides

CAIRO - Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi said there was no justification for a UN resolution aimed at ending violence in Libya and called it "blatant colonialism", al Jazeera reported on Saturday.

Al Jazeera said the remarks were made after Libya's response to the UN resolution was given by Foreign Minister Moussa Koussa on Friday but it was not immediately clear where he made the comments, which were aired by the television channel.

"This is blatant colonialism. It does not have any justification. This will have serious consequences on the Mediterranean and on Europe," he said.

"There must be safe air or sea navigation whatever the case. In 2011 they are colonizing us, massacring us, and imposing one no-fly zone after the other and one military attack after an other. What is this racism? What is this hatred?"

British forces are in action over Libya, Prime Minister David Cameron has confirmed, as UN allies began military strikes in earnest.

The action was launched against the country after leader Muammar Gaddafi apparently defied the UN's demand that he stop attacking his own people.

Loud blasts have been heard east of the capital Tripoli and fireballs were reportedly seen on the horizon.

British ships are also involved in a naval blockade of the country, sources told Sky News, as the world launched a co-ordinated response based on an earlier UN resolution to protect Libyan civilians. HMS Westminster is reportedly one of the ships involved.

Sounds like Libya is an an ASSLOAD of trouble...
