I am honored to present here part of the personal photo collection of Dave Mastorakis.Dave has given me premission so please all enjoy.
Here's Dave.....
Dave may check in from time to time so if you have any questions fire away.
-
Dave lived in the LA area for quite some time , Onlyme ever run into Dave ?
-
Dave with a couple of his old buddies. No GH bellies here :o
-
GREAT physique! How about a basic overview of his training style?
-
Here's Dave with a SuperStar of the 60s.

Hint, he trained in the same fashion as his best friend in one of the above pics.
-
I don't him but I do think I have seen him at the gym or even at the club I worked at. But his face looks very familar.
-
Here's Dave with a SuperStar of the 60s.
Bix tell me you didnt just say "a Superstar"
The guy in the suit is Marvin Elder one of the naturally strongest men of all time. Marvin could bench over 500lbs and do dips with 300lbs strapped to his waist.
-
It looks like Harold Poole to me.
-
I seems doing dips and chins with 300 lbs. around the waist was popular back then. Roy Callendar used to do dips and chins with 2 150 db's around his waist. Bill Pettis used to do dips that way back then. I tried and failed. But I could do sets of 50 by myself.
-
The guy wearing his little brother's jacket is indeed Harold Poole.
-
I have been know to be wrong you know :-[
-
It looks like Harold Poole to me.
Looks like Harold to me too-big dude, little waist......the good old days, no gorilla bellie.
Roy Callendar was famous for doing those pullups with the big dumbbells straped to him. I have done dips with 100+bells, but pullups are out of the question. Actually, in my prime I could only get 18-20 clean pullupswith my own bodyweight-today I bet O could only get 2-3.... :'(
-
It is Harold Poole- I had the right guy with the wrong name- very strong cat back in the day
-
It is Harold Poole- I had the right guy with the wrong name- very strong cat back in the day
Yes that is Harold aka Damian.
Dave himself was no weakling....
-
More Poole...
-
A young Dave Mastorakis asks Harold Poole " Hey Mr. Poole, that's a really nice suit. Does that come in your size?" :D
Bix, is that Mike Mentzer in the one photo with Dave? Is that the friend whose training style he emulated?
Also, wasn't Mastorakis supposed to have been a natural?
-
Lord Humungous you are right about Marvin Elder being the strongest guy of his time. Also one of the greatest physiques but the times were not kind to him if you know what I mean.
I started competing in the early 1960's and remember the bad old days of the AAU when the black guys stood no chance under Hoffman. Thank god for Weider.

Jimmy,
Ive heard some stores about hoffman being partial to white BBers. Im not sure but I think I read a interview from Sergio Oliva saying that Bob was a flat out racist. I never thought Elder looked that "black" to me in some pictures ive seen.

Dave up against some stiff competition..

His best friend again....
-
Hid best friend again....
is he pigeon toed....or is it the way he's posing?
-
Hid best friend again....
Damn he had a good, athletic looking build...I wish I could stay that lean year round and maintain size :'(

I talked to Pete the other day and told him about this thread. he competed with Dave in New York I think he said. Does anyone have pics of that contest where Pete is in it too.

Ya I'd love to see pics from that show.
Onlyme, where is Pete living these days ?

Still in that beautiful place called Victorville. I have no idea why he likes it there. He has a condo here but hasn't been here in about 4 years. He was down in Costa Rica when he found out his wife was pregnant so he came back to the US. He has a place in Vegas too. But he will be staying at the Orleans for the Olympia. He sound really good. You know he is about 80 pounds lighter than when he competed. SO look out for him at the Olympia. If I go I'll be right next to him most of the time. Don't if we'll go to the night show. He might, I don't care either way. He gets his free tickets and I get mine so who knows. I may stick my head in.

Hoffman was a full on racist, no black man ever won when he put on a show.
That is one area Joe Weider really put BBing on the map. Weider did not discriminate at all, and he never would tolerate that in his shows/judging.
Ricky Wayne was always a top writer for Weider, and also competed in Weider shows, and he really sticks up for Weider when it comes to race relations.
Ask Robby-he used Robbies upper body as a model for his muscle man bust ;D
-
Bix, did he and Mentzer stay friends through the 80's and 90's? What is he up to now?
-

Victorville is a growing place. I know it's hard to believe, but in the last 2 years the growth is phenomenal. I still wouldn't live there....but some like it.

Anyone have any cool pics of Freddy Ortiz? That cat was jacked for back in the day.
-
Chris Dickerson and Jim Morris, who of course are black, won the 1970 and 1973 AAU Mr. America contests respectively back when it when it was under Hoffman's control. Dickerson, in fact, was the first African American ever to win the AAU's Mr. America title.
Nevertheless, Hoffman was indeed a racist, a political reactionary, and as generally shady in all his dealings as the Weider brothers ever were. That--and Hoffman's at one time very successful magazines--is probably why the Weiders detested him so much; they realized he was even more of a scoundrel than they were.
The full story of Hoffman's York empire and its primary influence on the era's iron game is fasinatingly told in John Fair's masterly "Muscletown USA: Bob Hoffman and the Manly Culture of York Barbell. It's in paperback from Penn State University Press, and last I looked it was available on Amazon. For my money, it's an essential book in bodybuilding history.

Not to sound bossy and all but can we keep this thread limited to just pics from Dave's collection?

What year was that-1970-how long were blacks competeing in the AAU-since 1939- so saying that b/c Dickerson won in 1970 in no way vindicated Hoffman-Hoffman was probably not even involved at that time.
Sorry Bossa-I will stick to Dave on all other posts here!
Dave looks fantastic in his shots here! The one of Mentzer is very impressive also.

What ever you want bix :-\
Well the title to this thread is "Photo Collection Of Dave Mastorakis" ;D

Franco and Waller from the original Golds Gym.......
Not Waller, he never had triceps that thick.

Paul Grant?
-
Not Waller, he never had triceps that thick.
Those tri's are looking big, I dont think it is Paul Grant-Waller had Grant on size everywhere- including tri's......

Marvin Eder was a Jewish gentleman from NY (The Bronx I believe) who was not only super strong in the weighted dip & chin department but was also a very heavy military presser. His BB curling was way up there also. At that time , I've been told, the east coast BB'ers were more into the basic lifts like the dip, chin, etc with fewer sets. Lou Digni (misspelled) was another east coast BB'er with great potentional but had more interest getting into the movies out here than taking advantage of his superior BB'ing gifts.
-

He played Hercules didn't he?
-
I heard that Lou Digni (spell?) was in a few Italian muscle flicks but some were so bad they never reached the main movie houses here but mostly the drive in's when they had drive in's. That what's happen to a lot of Reg Park's movies made in Italy. I one's I saw were really bad but some of those Italian actress were hot. Had some old muscle mag's given to me when I was a kid and Digni really looked top rate.
We need some old vet's who were around the Italian movie lot's when some of these sand & sandel flicks were being made. Heard there was some wild times on those sets. And I think some were made in Spain like most of the old Clint Eastwood western were made by Italian conpanys. Any Italian verson of stuntman, Bix, onlyme, etc out there? And has anyone ever heard of a character named ED Fury who hung around the old muscle beach? My uncles said he was a whack job but funny in a strange way never the less.

The bodybuilder doing the front lat spread is Gabe Broudreaux . the scene with Franco is Mentzer [ Mike] doing a barbell curl pumping up.
In 85 I spoke with Mentzer about Masterakis and he said they had a falling out and didn't associate any longer. Just 2 weeks before his passing I had made arrangements to come to LA to visit Mike and I asked him the same question about Masterakis in which I received the same response- hadn't seen him in years.
I find it uninspiring that Masterakis never even sent a remembrance to Mentzer's web site apon his and Ray's passing.
-
The younger Mentzer...
-
Guess posing at the 1978 Mr. New Hampshire. I was there and couldn't believe the size of Dave's forearms, incredible.

Here's the truth straight from Dave MASStorakis...
Larry,
Who wrote the quote? In 1985 Mike was in a crazy state of mind. One night Julie his at this time girl friend
was being stalked by Mike so she spent the night with me in my appartment. Mike was crazy with jealous and left me a message which could have frozen hell. He forgave me about two years later when he realized I had done nothing wrong.
He gave me his entire clientele in 1994 when he was getting out of the personal training business. One night when Dorian was in town Mike rented a limo and he, Ray, Dorian, his wife and myself drove all around Beverly Hills, Malibu and Santa Monica.
Many times he would invite me out for dinner. One Thanksgiving about 1996 0r so he spent the entire day with my friends and family.
We would talk about the fact that we had been friends for so long about 35 years or so. When I moved away we spoke several times before he died. We spoke in April just two months before he died. He told me that he was gong to donate his kidney to Ray but they discovered that his blood was clotting, so they put him on a blood thinner. This stopped the surgery for a while. Ray was very disappointed. Mike had just had surgery to unpinch a nerve in his neck. We spoke on the phone for about one hour.
Regarding my never writing any thing on his sight. Well most people do not know that for months after their death I was going to be a speaker at their memorial services. I was in constant contact with his sister in PA. This kept getting posponed. Well it never happened. I felt for me the services would have been the best time to say my feelings about my two best friends since we were 15 years old. I would read the messages posted on the sight and most of them seemed to continue the rage between the HIT believers and the Non believers. Only a few spoke from their hearts. It seemed to me the ones who knew and loved them did not use that forum. So I choose not to. This person's responce is exactly the reason I DID NOT. No one really knew my relationship with Mike except Mike and of course Ray. Let people say what they want to. I remember the early years when we would go the the movies or listen to Cheech and Chong records or just talk for hours about the future. That is the Mike Mentzer I remember the person. His sence of humor and his intensity about life were non-compromising.
Larry I do not wish to debate this subject but feel free to quote me or use it in its entirety.
I could go on and on as you have seen me do on IronAge. Enough is enough!!!!

It's ok.....
I've seen better

-
JPM, Yea, I knew Ed Fury. At least I met him a couple of times. Hs real name was/is Ed Holvochik if I recall correctly and he was a very impressive bodybuilder in his time ( 50's - early 60's?)
The last time I ALMOST ran into Ed was while he was appearing in some kind of show in San Francisco. Never did get the chance at that time to look him up though.
I believe there are some photos of him on one of the better web sites. I'lldo some research.
Good to hear that name again And Lou Degni too!
-
OK, lets get back on topic here :)

-
OK I'm BACK ;D
I had not thought to tell ya all but the pics I'm posting except for the ones of Dave , Dave took so I'm sure there may be some stories behind them . Again any questions for Dave ?
-
good picture of Roger
-
Roger C has the slight X-mas tree coming in, but not there just yet.
Roger tried to make a come back in the IFBB-I think it must have been in the 1980's-late 80's-can't rcall. But anyway, the competition had long surpassed his physique of the 70's and he dropped out of the show beofre the prejudging final posing round -b/c he knew he was geting killed.
I always felt sort of bad about that-he skipped the night show obviously.
-
wonder how much sauce Casey was slamming when he was 16, 17 18 years old?
My buddie who lives in Arizona has trained with Casey. Said he has some weird training philosophies. Plus my friend said he was a major drug abuser-as in smoking coke!
Crazy life of a pro BBer for the 80's....
What type of statement is this? You have no right to accuse someone of doing hard drugs ( or anything else ) with out proof.
619, every post I read of your is like those a child might write . . . poor grammer, inappropriate punctuation and nothing but foolish bashing.
What next? " My daddy can beat up your daddy . . ." why don't you grow up, son.

When you go to make a post....under wear you type it says "Free Image with TinyPic.com Upload, Copy BB Link & Paste
it's pretty simple.
What I do is once I "host" the image is copy & paste the one next to IMG.....paste that address under what you write & presto....image will be there.

There's no way that Eddie should have beaten Dave at that contest .

Eddie has been the manager of World Gym (Santa Monica/Venice/Marina Del Rey) for 25+ years now.
He is a great guy, and is very well repected!

OK-How old is Mike at the Jr. Mr. A? He looks very young-like 25 or so.
-
Only just found this thread, some great pics of Dave here Bix,cheers. The guess who on the previous page is Len Archambault.
-
Very cool pictures. I knew Dave reasonably well. He was always a bit quiet. I knew he was friends with Mike, but I did not know they went back that far and were so close. Kent Kuehn would always talk about Daves bodybuilding history but Dave would just sort of laugh him off. He was humble and always friendly... a good guy.
