Title: Be There's OFFICIAL May '17 Competition Thread
Post by: Simple Simon on January 12, 2017, 10:48:31 AM
I am starting a thread here on advice from Princess L as it can be better policed as opposed to the GO.
I competed last year and placed 4th, hoping to improve on that placing this year

never been a big eater, maybe that has held me back in the past, I can go all day without eating and it doesn't bother me, I dont particularly like eating, I really have to force myself.

When I was a kid I used to go from 9am to 5pm most days in school holidays, it was only at school when I had lunch, sometimes didn't even have breakfast, when it was it was only a bowl of cereal.

I look a bit flat at the moment which is understandable, the losing muscle shouldnt be an issue due to other factors.
I also take BCAAs during the day

i'm sure you have tried every method of getting more food in,
It doesn't appear to have held you back.

It works for you - then i wouldn't see it as a problem.
In fact less hassle eating so much.

Do you do any aerobics in your contest prep -  Hmm probably not- no need with
your low calorie food intake.

I do think you would benefit from the combination of steady cardio Twice a day
And eating more.
This is easier said than done in your case.

It may just be worth a try for a few days just to see if it ups your appetite.

Are you office based type of work or more manual/ physical-- mind with your food intake
I'm going to fall over if you say manual / physical. Ha.

Office based, may try swimming, always hungry after swimming, fucking hopeless at it, sink like a stone.
If i curl up in a ball I sink, most people bob about on the surface.

Ha - yep much the same for me. Swim like a Brick.
Good idea - and worth a try. If it makes you eat more.

Any flights of stairs - That may be worth a try - though it can be a bit severe if over worked.

Looking at the pics - I can see to some extent 1 & 2 place each has strong body parts
Overall top to bottom front to back you have the best balanced physique- I'd have placed
You 1st - We don't all judge the same. Some are over awed by a couple of outstanding body parts -
I believe the man with the least weak parts & all round physique while having enough tissue & conditioning
Should win.

Just going all out for condition this year, if they are bigger then so be it, if I lose because I could have been sharper then its my fault.

Not going to weigh myself from 6 weeks out, it can play with your mind.

food today

100gms whey 100gms oats 200ml semi skim milk (left overnight in fridge and eaten for breakfast) 900 cals or so.

2 tins tuna with mayo on two wraps (750 cals)

8 oz ribeye and fried potatoes (chips) with tomato sauce. 1000 cals

30gms of BCAAs throughout the day

not too bad , will stick at this for the rest of the week, will omit the fried potatoes from tomorrow.

If short of cals make it up with peanut butter.

You certainly don't have to worry about size or symmetry. From the looks of it you are going to stick to a rather basic calorie counting regime, nothing wrong with that. Conditioning will win you this show. You are plenty lean enough but not ahead of schedule but right on track. You could forgo cardio if you wanted to conserve energy and just manipulate you calories to get yourself shredded. Since you don't have much of an appetite I would lean towards this approach. Personally I like to keep things simple I would eat lean beef rice potato chicken eggs and egg whites and do around 5 meals. The only reason I say is if you are counting calories it's just easier this way. Unless you are eating the same exact thing daily and you already know the calorie count.

What is your current Bodyweight - if you know.
And how much body fat do you think you need to lose.

Will you change your PED's ( if you use )
& to what & for how long.

Send a message if you prefer- as its open forum.
Or just ignore. Ha.

Had a few stones in the past, doctor put it down to me not drinking as much water when I stopped competing back in the mid 90s, I always drank a lot and then went to drinking like a normal person, he felt my body had adapted to the large volume of water so it struggled when i restricted it.

fish pastry and mashed potatos

Really enjoying this thread, thanks for doing it.  I particularly like when I see your choices a bit similar to something I'd choose - my example here would be the noodles and tuna thing.  I know (now) it doesn't really matter, but I used to choose the cheapest authentic Chinese noodles I could find - no Batchelors Souper Noodles for me LOL.  So I was wondering what you go for?

And after just 5 years of on/off dieting in the '90s it took me a loooooong time to even be able to look at a can of tuna again, so I respect the fact you can still face it  :)  You eat it plain?  Or maybe a little onion, etc?

Best of luck dude, you're an inspiration (no homo of course  ;))

Has there ever in your whole life been a time you had no abs at all?  Or have you always started from a basically lean position.  I guess what I'm getting at is do you buy into the ecto meso endo somatotype thing, and if so what would you classify yourself as?

And how do you cook/like your rib eye?  I use a griddle and cook it rare - never tried grilling it.  (Christ I just realised what a dull sentence that was, apologies)

I did get a bit lost at around 44, I saw a photo of myself in the garden asleep on a hammock, fuck me was that a wake up call, I have never been over 34 trousers.

Im naturally lean because i dont eat a lot, if I ate pizza and ice cream every day I would just get fat.
I started at 140lbs lean and have managed to get to 200lb onstage, thats a 60lb lean gain, not bad really.
I used to think I had a fast metabolism but in reality I have never really eaten much.
As a kid I would regularly go all day without food during school holidays, not that I had a shitty childhood or anything it was the norm where i lived, all my mates were the same, they sometimes had a beans on toast at home but that it.
Fuck sake I used to drink water from the outside toilet flush because i couldn't get in the house.    ;D

Rib eye just pan fry, I tend to cut them in strips to cook quicker.

Are you where you want to be condition wise ?

Im 3 weeks in front of where i was at this stage last year so Im OK.

Its always a panic thought when you see bits of stubborn fat.
Also condition fluctuates from day to day, some days you look great then another you look shit, it plays with your mind a bit.
I will be going seeing the guy I normally see before a show in a couple of weeks , hes always brutally honest..
Having a day off today, eating a bit of treat foods.
Full steam ahead from tomorrow.

this was me last year on the 14th March with the show on the 21st May
this year the show is on the 6th May

Hope it's going well.  Two questions please:  how do you like your chicken prepared?  And do you use salt - either to cook or at the table?

Actually 3 questions if you don't mind this one I've just thought of - does your wife diet at the same time as you?  I ask because I always find it easier if we do it at the same time.  That way I can cook exactly what I want and there's no temptation caused by her preparing stuff I choose to stay away from... (I know, I know... my lack of willpower sickens me too!  ;D)

I have started cooking my chicken in these

sheets of paper you lay on the george foreman grill and it flavours the chicken while it cooks
I never really add salt to food apart from chips...

My Mrs doesnt diet, I just prepare what she wants and eat my own stuff, TBH most of the time our evening meals are not that much different
I have a steak wrap and she has steak and chips..
Last night we both had the lamb cobs

dont really count as such, but prob eat around 2000 during initial prep, just dropped another 3-400 this week by cutting out noodles and wrap and adding in some more protein.

Off season around 3000 most days, but every day is different.

then they must have no legs, the only reason people buy larger waisted trousers is to fit their legs unless you have them specially tailored.

cheers mate, going to a new gym opening tomorrow meeting some of the guys from a new up and coming supplement company, they are doing lots of promotions at shows and sponsoring a lot of new bodybuilders.
Bit of networking didn't do anyone any harm...

👍🏻  Looking tighter & it's not the best quality pic.
And no muscle tears that I can see - It's sadly fairly common to see as we get older.
Is it 3wks out now.

How was the new gym opening - go well.

no muscle tears  (fingers crossed), dont fuck about with heavy weights, all moderate weights and reps
its just a pic from the mac built in camera, I dont have a camera phone, i look a lot tighter this morning, hams and glutes are sharpening and my low back which was a problem last year is a lot better, tighter and drier than it was on show day last year, its 3 weeks to my warm up show and 4 weeks to the main show.
the gym opening is today, looking forward to seeing some of the UKs top guys and girls.

Excellent all good news.
Ahead of where you were at last year and still got enough time to get leaner
& fill out nicely for your main comp.

Sadly for me I have a damaged left pec & tricep/elbow - motorbike accident.
It's the main reason I stopped competing.

Let's us know who you rub shoulders with today.
Enjoy

what are you doing for upper chest or are you mainly just flat pressing? as i suspect you are.

I just bench press occasionally normally a warm up excercise, I only use 25 a side
my core exercises are machine decline press and flys and cables.
nothing for upper chest as i dont think you can develop different parts of the chest, you either have thick upper pecs or you dont.

i think you have to look at 2 ways yes once your genetic limit is met size wise nothing can be done, shape we know is at birth, but those little extras a tweak o a movement or slow/fast rep /hold/squeeze or even a slightly higher angle on bench pad can stress certain parts of the chest,,a point on a leverone thread was certain yrs his chest was smaller than usual or better due to less front delt 'over blown'size wise, guy was a wicked pressure strength wise and his side chest pose was great ,,from front he looked less chest wise,,i don't know just my opinion,,u look great man,,maybe some in or careful done bench to neck'gironda'special can maintain the clavicle upper chest tie in,,

fair one if it works for you. I like low incline BB press and flys myself. maybe you should throw in some incline machine press like Hammer strength. not nit picking but i am sure you could fill out more in the upper chest.

yes good post. press to neck is effective but risky for some. not an exercise to go heavy on.

I think thats just my age pal...

I feel really focussed at the moment, everything seems to be falling into place.

Im staying at just about eating enough to function, that way I know I couldnt have done any more to get in condition, My diet will stay the same now, will be going for a meal with my son and his wife and our grand daughter on Saturday, I will have something nice and just stay within my calorie limit for the day.

Its hard dieting through Bank Holiday weekend, my Mrs is a real support and hasnt complained once.

Will be going on holiday right after the show, going to book somewhere really nice for her.

You have a balanced family life
And have a nice holiday to look forward to.

Good man you got your life sorted.

He's always in good lean condition for off season.
Better than a fair few who get up & compete.

probably go up 14lb , maybe 20 tops

any more than that and i look like shit, im not one who can go up 40lbs and still look reasonably good, I carry fat on my low back and low abs, doesnt take long to make a mess of yourself with that combo.

lowest I have been this prep is 195lb, that was dried out in the morning.

Been to see a trusted friend today and had him take a look, he says its the best hes seen me for a long time,.

just got two weeks now to tighten things up a bit around the low back and lower glutes and should be spot on.

Really looking forward to getting onstage this year, last year I was a bit non plussed.

feeling great at the moment, still fatigued but got rid of all the sickness feeling, looking forward to the first show, going to cruise in and not do anything to change things apart from dripping in a few more carbs
I had a bowl of oats before bed last night and a banana at 3am when I woke for the toilet. this morning I was very tight and dry and my low back had crisped up a lot.

slight bit still to come off under my glute hamstring but confident its going to be gone come show day (10 days out)

small tiger bread hollow with turkey and pastrami
Mrs back from a few days away so went out, had a double cheeseburger from BK

Been advised to experiment with carbs this week , drip feeding to see how it affects condition.

Funny enough that's actually my favorite thing about all this. I love people assuming one thing about me based on appearance whereas in truth I couldn't be further away from the stereotype.

The dichotomy is great. Probably the main reason I even do it

But Just be wary that sev may have been secretly following this thread and conducting his own prep for both him and radu with plans of showing up at the same show meaning you could place no higher than a disappointing third, so try and not get your hopes up too much.

Looking good 👍🏻
Almost there - some extra carbs & a bit of water depletion,
You'll be dry & full.

Sounds so easy when Typing it.

2nd place, bit disappointed, will be competing against the guy again next week, had some greta feedback about my posing routine and said I should overturn the result next week with a deeper tan, just wasnt dark enough.
Picking some protan up tomorrow on the advice of ex 212 pro John Hodgeson, eating a bit of good food at the moment, back on the diet tomorrow, no stone unturned this week, this may well be my last time onstage, will go out knowing i couldnt have done more.

should have some pics tomorrow when they go online

Congrats on a top 3 position whether you are disappointed or not!!   8)

I look forward to you reversing the situation next week.

Did your trick of staying up late and rising late work for you?

nah... went to bed at 1 am, fucked woke up at 5 am, lay there until 6am then got up, really nervous all day.

I wasnt nervous last year because I wasnt at my best, this year I couldnt really have done any more so if I didnt do well I had nowhere really to go after.

eating a bit tonight then really going to hit it hard this week, sorting out my posing routine to get it spot on and just trying to get the last little bit from my glute ham tie ins.
John Hodgeson picked up on my hams looking softer in some poses, I really have to be careful tensing my hams and glutes too much as it can cause my back to spasm, if that happens then its show over.

will do my best for next week then Im away on holiday from Monday for a week in Minorca to relax, looking forward to spending some quality time with my Mrs, shes had to put up with a lot these last few weeks.

did the old drop the sodium for three days routine, fuck knows why I do it, this week keeping sodium high up until Thursday, cut back and keep the water going in all week until Friday night then stop the water and add in some sodium the morning of the show.

I went out after the show Saturday night and had Chinese food , Sunday morning dry full and 4lbs heavier.
Have been advised its the sodium that keeps you dry and full not the carbs.

Read about the monks who preserve their bodies after dehydrating for days they have a huge amount of salt which pulls all the water from their skin. it kills them, but I will be fine because I wont be dehydrated and wont be overdoing the sodium   ;D

fingers crossed.

lets see how it pans out this week, Im not getting onstage flat and lacking vascularity , which is what happened last week.

That sounds good - the sodium loading / dropping does work very well.
do you use slow k - potassium?

With those corrections to your physique it will be a dramatic visual improvement.

will put things right for Saturday, looks like its going to be a big line up with some real quality competitors, just going to bring my best, hope this new approach works out this week, I cant really do anything more at this point.
I am putting together a (I hope) a very polished routine, last week I winged it and didnt practice it at all and got a lot of good feedback.
My strong point is my posing so really going to give it everything...

and no, no bias at all from knowing you.

You've got the best physique on stage.  Other two look like washed up drug addicts while you pumped and full.

I swear to god, the best judges would be a random selection of college chicks picked from a spring break beach and asked to rate you best to worst.

Being a contest judge I would say Be There should of won that,
From a judging perspective they could of been swayed by the apparent
Better condition of the man that they placed 1st - I say apparent because
Of his better colour - Be There's tan let him down as he knows.

Far better structure & shape & flow to Be There - Also it is possible the
Winner was Known to some of the judges - I have refused to judge those
I have got ready & have asked that other judges not judge people that are from
Their gym or have helped.
Often they won't step down.

Like you I know nothing of how these things are judged, but be there looks to have the better physique by far, the other blokes have the "bunch of body parts thrown together" look about them.
Also to echo what has already been said, awesome physique for any age, to just say awesome physique for 50 is a massive understatement.

I beat the guy who beat me in the first show yesterday so its all good, Bernie is now 72 I think, really nice guy, honour to share a stage with him, hes a legend in UK bodybuilding, Paul was also a very humble nice guy.

I may do the Britain to get my posing routine done properly, my music wouldnt play so I had to wing it to a tune I had never heard, disappointing as I got a big build up from the MC about how he recognised my posing style from 28 years ago when we were both competing back in the day.

Thanks mate, massive thanks to you for the online prep work, you asked me to do things that went against the grain for me but fair dos mate, they worked and i looked the best I have ever looked.

Anyone reading this who needs help with prep contact this guy, he couldnt have been more helpful, phone calls at 5am up until 10pm, (I dont know when he sleeps)

think im going to do the Britain, my Mrs seems to want me to because of the feedback I got after the show, as said on holiday for a week, may not get the chance to train but will keep an eye on my diet... I will be in touch mate, once again massive thanks, you are a top guy.

May give the Britain a miss and make some improvements up until the last show of the year
In November which would allow
Me to qualify for next year Britain that would give me another five months to make some gains and hopefully a bigger impact at the brits
Enjoying my time away at the moment will make a decision 100% when I get home

Do you ever check your BP at all?  Not on holiday of course LOL, just in general.  I've got a bit obsessed with mine - got a spreadsheet and everything (oh brother)

Hope you both had a nice holiday (nh)

back on a decent diet as of today, no more ice cream and huge pizzas and pasta.

food today, egg mayo on two toast
bowl of oats with cinnamon honey
protein bar
tuna and noodles
bowl granola with milk
mixed salad with prawns ham peppers and onions
flap jack
will have a wrap later around 9pm

1st day back training today since the show, huge pump still carrying water, slowly getting back to normal.
Will look at maintaining my weight around 15st and eating around 3500 cals a day for the next few weeks then re-evaluate.
Its 25 weeks until the November show, hope to make some improvements to legs hams and some upper body thickness around the pecs and delts.

Never been as motivated as I am now.

Having spoken to 'Be There' we think it's best to miss the Britain & plan for the later show this
Year & The Britain finals next year.

I'm confident he can still make great improvements to an already very good physique,
He will place very high.

Haha!  What happened to putting blue circles over your face?  ;D

No disrespect to your fellow competitors at all, but in that particular shot it's hard to fathom how you came 3rd....  I can see the muscularity of the other guys, sure, but structurally/aesthetically I'd pick you as my favourite (nh) even if I didn't 'know' you...  no BS.

(And I am SO tempted to pop you next to Zane in the same pose...  :D 8))

thanks, I was at my best ever to be honest, I think I was better than when I won the show in 96

Some last week prep from Illuminati really dialled me in this time.
Going to be working with him for the next year to prep for a show in november and hopefully qualify for next years Britain.

just going to work hard this next twelve months, make sure I make some improvements, looking towards November to get some chest thickness and round out the delts a bit, also work on the hams and glutes, I need to get a bit of size on my hams and quads.
Always conscious of my low back disc problem though, need to up my weight a bit on the stiff leg deads, slowly but surely.

But seriously, check out the similarity of the limb balance between our man and The Chemist - it's not just that we all recognise one of Zane's signature poses when we see it, it's the fact that the proportions and lean mass distribution on both men are pleasing to look at in the same way...  (OK, I'm drifting towards Homo Island here so I need to change course, but you get what I mean....)

place third behind Paul Rowe and Bernie Cooper, got an invite to the Britain in 4 weeks, on holiday Monday for a week then will decide about the Britain...

Certainly no shame in that.

Bernie Cooper is/was a good friend of mine.  My first serious training partner and mentor in BBing.  Top man who defies age.

I have no idea how in the hell I just noticed this entire thread. I am beside myself considering that I have been actively following your 2 other threads on this Positive Forum. So much incredible stuff on this thread that I am only now catching up on.

I have to say.....You look absolutely PHENOMINAL!!! Seeing these competition photos are an absolute inspiration to me and the posts and info contained within are inspiring me to think about competing again for something regional  this summer.

I  havent competed since the late 90's and am in my late 40's now. But man....I am beyond impressed with your physique and conditioning in these competitions.  You have tremendous balance to your physique and you really know how to pose and display your physique.  I hate when people try to make comparisons but for some reason...I am reminded of the physique of 1988 Berry DeMey in a lot of your poses, especially the one with bicep flexed and other arm reaching overhead with hand fanned open. Very very impressive body my man. And you clearly got robbed. You look to be the only man onstage that knows how to pose. These other guys look like they are preparing to take a crap onstage...lol. Great job. Truly looking forward to your upcoming shows.

thanks for the kind words.

I was only going to do last years show then retire, I got a lot of really good feedback which changed my mind, a lot said I reminded them of the 90s, it was then when people actually put effort into presentation.
I have got my music ready for this year and am going to put together a routine this time, I normally wing it.
I did a routine last year but my music didn't play and they played some shitty rock track they used about 10 times that day.

It pisses me off that the posing round isn't scored, it would force people to make an effort if they thought their placings would be affected.

They should score muscularity, symmetry and posing as 3 separate entities, no calves, marked down, poor conditioning, marked down, lack of balance marked down, fist pumping, marked down.

I agree with everything you just said. Not scoring the posing round is absolutely insane. Supposedly Wayne Demilia's new IFBB organization will be re-implementing the scoring round. Should be interesting to see what happens.

It is meant to be a show after all, the posing routines should be interesting and watchable.
I get really bored at bodybuilding shows, I end up leaving after my class..
