Title: Posterior labrum surgery recovery timeline
Post by: Jimmy L on December 14, 2007, 07:52:30 PM
On December 31 I'm getting surgery for a posterior labrum tear from the 8 to 11 o clock position. My doc and PT have come up with this timeline. I'm going to be 28 years old. People who have had this surgery or know about this kind of surgery tell me what you think:

1) Mon. 12-31-07 get surgery for a torn labrum.
2) Weds. 01-07-08 1 WEEK POST SURGERY start physical therapy with my therapist.
3) Mon. 02-04-08 5 WEEKS POST SURGERY take off sling.
4) Mon. 02-18-08 7 WEEKS POST SURGERY stop physical therapy with my therapist and start my own physical therapy strengthening program (under the eye of my PT, I will be doing this at his facility).
5) Mon. 03-31-08 3 MONTHS POST SURGERY start running on treadmill.
6) Mon. 06-02-08 5 MONTHS POST SURGERY stop physical therapy strengthening program and start light weightlifting with no restrictions.
7) Mon. 07-14-08 6 1/2 MONTHS POST SURGERY start boxing training.

What do you guys think? Is it too conservative and I should speed it up? Is it too pushy and I should fall back on some things? What do you guys think? Is this a good post labrum surgery recovery schedule?

it sounds about right, on average.

but I like to go according to a Functional Progression of return to activity guidelines.   Your recovery will dictate what you can do and when.  Try to keep things relatively light and in the pain-free range of motion.

I wouldn't rush things, cuz what you think is feeling fine, may still not be strong enough to handle what you're wanting to do.  Tissues need to repair, and stabilize.  There's absolutely nothing wrong with conservative.   You should not be completely sore the next day and furthermore, you shouldn't be developing soreness during your rehab exercises.

good luck

Got cut Jan 3, 2013 labrum tear 10 to 2 with bursa removed and some bone removal. MVA impact dislocated left shoulder from seatbelt.

Still sore and have pain but not like before surgery, very tight. Lifted heavy reps low weight before surgery to strengthen, but looks like had no positive effect. Range of motion at 80% stuck at 155-160 degrees. Paranoid that I re-injured the tear but have been very careful. Started walking treadmill day 7 and PT for 8 weeks now discontinued. Would like some info from fully recovered folks on timeline of recovery and hurdles to watch out for.

Today first time tried bum bells 10's and feel sore with pain. Pain is pinching sensation and dull nagging pain that I have after stretching daily (today just more pronounced). Over the 12 weeks pain has improved but still persists on occasion. Feedback and comments would be greatly appreciated.

Had the surgery myself in 2008 by Dr. Samani.  Like Tedim I had bursa and bone removal.  Healing from the surgery itself was fairly quick.  Gaining full mobility took a little longer, up to a year.  I was very cautiously lifting weights by week four.

It's now just over 3 months since surgery and I have lost a lot of upper body mass and still can't lift past 10 lbs without discomfort....incline 25 deg and shoulder press. Range on motion improving but very slowly.

Today bench 175 for three felt strong top of ladder x5...but 185 for 1 shoulder had a hard time pushing up close hand bench just bar felt awkward shoulder made popping sounds. Arnold press 25s felt raw and tight x4, then 35's hurt. Inclined press 55s x2 laddered up total sets 7 pussed out at 60's rest were lower weigh delt workouts until failure.

Hope no one has to go through this....sucks.

5 month ortho appointment was today....I bitched and cried and begged...no AAS  :(....maybe a cordizone shot in a couple of months  ::)

Ortho said looks good, asked me to not push the weight any higher for a month or two rep more but no more weight...told me to call him in 30 days but no further face to face needed. Said I would be at 100% in 6-8 months from today as long as I do not re-injure the labrum.

So anxious but content,

will start pushing heavy in 60 days again.... so will not exceed 175 bench, 55 incline dumbbell...50 dumbbell curls and 45 each side on curl bar...mil. press max at 40 dumbbell...NO deads, told me to find something else till OCT., no pull ups chin ups until OCT.....the rest pretty much unrestricted or within weight limit above. But reps will go up!

Good day....benched 195 for 3 shoulder held strong, felt tight but no pain until cooldown, and the pain was manageable. Incline dumbells laddered 7 sets with 65lbs for 5 top set.....twice

ROM at 85-90% and tight post workouts when shoulder use is heavy.

215 for 2 shoulder hurts....feels like a stinger. Not a happy guy today. Military press standing  bar plus 40 total feels like total shit...left side lagging in going up...

Arnold press on smith with 25 and 10 plates for 8 feels ok

Frustrated today....this surgery was no joke, be careful people shoulders are hard to rehab!

Shoulder felt like shit all weekend....pain in the morning and poor rotation

Hurt today in all lift at 185 for 7 felt like left was giving out and very painful.....maybe overstrained it will give it a semi rest this week...more reps less weight on everything

Also going to schedule appt with ortho....my collar bone sticks out 1/2 inch higher than before surgery, before he trimmed it. Looks like a bump on where shoulder and collarbone meet.

My recovery was great.  I had the surgery in 09.  Surgery was performed by Dr. Samani.  My shoulder has never been better.  I don't have exactly the same level of range of movement as the other arm but the difference is minimal.  I'm very happy with the results

Geez, I wish I could remember. I don't think the pain lasted very long. Maybe a couple of weeks

getting better  ;D

benching 185-205 without pain for 10+ reps incline and flat.....I'd say 75-80% recovered at this point...

Tuesday...was doing incline bench 205 when a popcorn popping sound in my shoulder and the weight just sat down on my chest, I tucked elbow and racked it. Felt like a zipper opening in my shoulder no pain at first. Now very painful and feels like the pain pre op.

Today tried to do 135 pain in shoulder upper bi and lower bi tendons....have a very uneasy feeling that I tore my anchors out, or something else.

Will be calling ortho is pain persists into next week.....FUCK!

Note from my PT....

Ted

See the doc, the pain in the biceps makes me think that you may have have at least strained the labrum or rotator cuff. Of course you may have just popped some scar tissue, which would in fact be a good thing. It wouldn’t hurt to see the doc regardless.

Dan

..........fuck......

Not medical advice since I'm one of the few on this site that isn't a doctor millionaire rocket scientist ninja special forces samurai stud but one thing I've learned from injuries in Rugby and being blown up in war is don't rush PT. Better to swallow your pride, add extra time and just let shit heal completely and correctly. Otherwise you will just end up permanently screwed and always have "issues" with it.
