Super sets- trisets-giant sets
« on: July 24, 2024, 07:18:31 PM »
I haven't done super sets in ages. Some stars like Draper did super sets and tri sets for everything. I remember a bodybuilder Joe Means that won best legs and most muscular in the 1976 AAU Mr. America used tri sets for body parts.  He was ripped doing this. His workouts must have been non stop movement.

Share some of your experiences with giant sets and tri sets. I always wanted to try doing something like a giant set of leg extensions, leg press, squat and leg curls.  I know without even without even actually doing it I would be sucking wind after the first series. Do guys using tri sets and giant sets lower the weight each series?

Going to try some ordinary super sets starting tomorrow. Use using a basic antagonist body parts super sets like back and chest exercises.  Also alternating tricep and bicep.

I still have one more charity type 5K that I'm training for in September so I'm skinny as hell right now. I will lower the miles running after the race.

I don't understand your statement that you'll be "sucking wind" after doing these exercises?

Aren't you in shape for lifting?  You get exhausted after doing a few of these sets?

You need to get in lifting shape.

If you can't handle doing this kind of stuff you need to change your training.

I think you'll find you can do it but you have to mentally learn to push yourself through the sets just like you do when you run.

You don't think doing a giant set of legs are tough? We live an hour apart. You should lift with me.  We will see who is in lifting shape.

I did *-sets like drop sets, super sets, and giant sets when I followed the Bob Paris books (especially Flawless book). Giant sets are tough especially for the legs and I'm a total life long natural. Paris had you doing high reps (20/20+) for legs. I really couldn't increase the weight for these and often increased by small increments or kept the weight the same. I got a nice beach body out of it and you do get ripped.

So you can do it?

You just said you never did Giant Sets.

Then why are you asking the question?

If you want more endurance for your weight training do more.

However, this type of training is for pre-contest cutting, not building up.

Be careful about creating too much cortisol and inflammation with intense training as it will mess with your immune system.

You like to do that but you are messing with your immune system by constantly beating yourself into the ground.

Paris was a drug monkey.

Don't copy his training.

That type of training is good for getting defined and cut up.

Supersets are a great way to get a great workout in when time is short or you want to lose a few pounds.
The great Bill Pearl mentioned to me a great superset of Preacher curls & close grip chins for biceps.
The good thing is you can completely exhaust the muscle group in fewer sets without say extra weight on the chins.
Another advantage is as I wrote saving time using antagonistic muscles in your supersets...( also good )
A very overlooked principle is pre-exhaust which is what I did with the preacher curls & chins.

I think pre-exhaust is useful too when lifting heavy isn't possible such as an injury.

Pre-exhaust will be better for Oldtimer1 as he's running lots & as he wrote very lean.
Lifting heavily could injure him at this point..so you have to think about it.

I used them almost exclusively at times and added weight after each cycle.....of course I was doing a cycle (gear) so I can`t comment on their effectiveness when training natty.

I will say try them out but keep sets low and see if you like them.....or mix them into your regimen here and there just to shake things up.

The juice obviously helped me recover faster....so there`s that.

In my opinion. The best supersets are opposing muscles. Chest and back.  Used to love that when i was young and did not have shoulder problems. Biceps and triceps. Still do. Leg curls and leg extensions before some form of squats (now its hack squats) and leg presses.

He sounds like the late wrestler Paul Orndorff. I expected him to say "Remember: no matter how hard you try, you'll never look as good as me" (one of Orndorff's quotes regarding working out).  ;D

Most of these workouts you can take with a pinch of salt
But the tri-sets would be good but not full body.
