NEW YORK (WABC) -- NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio has called for the State legislature to revoke Gov. Andrew Cuomo's emergency powers amid the recent allegations against him.

Amid increasing calls for an independent investigation into the allegations, the Cuomo administration has asked the attorney general and the court of appeals to select an independent lawyer to conduct a thorough review and issue a public report.

De Blasio released a statement Sunday morning after a second aide came forward with sexual harassment allegations against the governor on Saturday.

"New Yorkers have seen detailed, documented accounts of sexual harassment, multiple instances of intimidation, and the admitted withholding of information on the deaths of over 15,000 people. Questions of this magnitude cannot hang over the heads of New Yorkers as we fight off a pandemic and economic crisis. It's clear what must now take place. The State legislature must immediately revoke the Governor's emergency powers that overrule local control. In addition, two fully independent investigations must be held immediately into the deaths at nursing homes and the disturbing personal misconduct allegations. Precedence shows that investigations of the Governor must be completely independent of his office. The investigation into nursing home deaths must be free to examine campaign contributions from the nursing home industry. And the investigation into sexual misconduct must be led by someone fully independent of the governor, not the former business partner of the Governor's top advisor. 2021 must be a year of progress and recovery. These efforts for transparency must be met."

There’s a reason that Gov. Cuomo, Emmy-winning TV star and best-selling leader of the fight against the coronavirus, has abruptly gone dark.

Actually, there are a few reasons.

The fatal moment, politically speaking, probably wasn’t Cuomo’s decision last March — when it looked like the hospital system here could collapse like it had in Italy — to require nursing homes to take medically stable patients back in from hospitals without testing them for COVID and to give both nursing homes and hospitals a legal shield. It’s his refusal, nearly a year later, to acknowledge the literally fatal consequences of that decision.

Last month, Attorney General Letitia James released a devastating report estimating that the number of deaths of nursing home residents in hospitals was 50% greater than the state had previously acknowledged, forcing Cuomo’s health commissioner to finally disclose 4,000 additional deaths tied to nursing homes.

Cuomo shrugged, arguing that since we already knew how many total people had died, the breakdown he’d concealed for nearly a year was a mere detail:

“Who cares [if they] died in the hospital, died in a nursing home? They died.”

That was remarkably callous, more so because he’d had so long to prepare his answer. But Cuomo simply isn’t built to admit a mistake.

Then came his chief aide Melissa DeRosa’s blackmail-attempt-turned-confession on a conference call with Democratic lawmakers two weeks ago. That’s where she told them that the administration hadn’t turned over the coronavirus-related nursing home death numbers they’d been asking for since last spring because Trump’s Justice Department had asked for the same numbers last summer.

Gov. Cuomo dropped from LGBT gala set to honor him

Gov. Andrew Cuomo was set to be the primary honoree at the LGBT Bar of New York’s 2021 gala but when news broke of allegations he sexually harassed a former aide, he was scrubbed from the event.

Early Wednesday, a few hours before a Medium post on the alleged harassment was published, the LGBT Bar of New York sent an email announcing Cuomo as this year’s “Community Vision Award Recipient.”

“For decades, the LGBT Bar Association Foundation of Greater New York, LeGaL, has bestowed the Community Vision Award upon individuals or organizations with a distinguished record of service to the LGBTQ community, including a sustained commitment to achieving equal rights for all members of our community,” the email reads.

It includes a long list of accomplishments the non-profit worked with Cuomo on, including the repealing of the “walking while trans ban” and the passage of GENDA, which prohibits discrimination based on gender identity in New York.

But when it came time for the virtual gala Thursday evening, Cuomo wasn’t mentioned by the hosts once, a video of the event on YouTube shows.

“With the help of the LGBT Bar of New York, we have achieved so many major victories right here in New York,” master of ceremonies Marti Gould Cummings, a drag artist and City Council candidate, said at the start of the event as they rattled off a list of accomplishments they’d credited Cuomo for in the email without mentioning the embattled gov.

The gala went on to celebrate five other honorees for the group’s “Community Excellence Award,” naming them and congratulating them on their success without any mention of Cuomo.

Cuomo’s office has repeatedly denied the allegations.
