Apart from firearms, what's the next best choice of weapon for home defense?

I was considering a short sword, which I could keep on my desk as an ornament and have ready for self defense, should the need arise. Of course, I would then also keep it in my bedroom and lock my bedroom at night, so nobody could theoretically use it to kill me in my sleep.

wouldnt a short sword be superior to a knife? dog is too much of a liability. plans of my home did not take into account the proper power over ethernet wiring for home security systems and i refuse to blast myself with more emf wireless data.
