Traditionally, I've been a wine guy, but I recently started to really enjoy Bourbon.
I've taken to making a Manhattan during the evening while enjoying some Fox news.
What's your preference in Bourbon?

Jack Daniels Old No. 7.
Man, Jack takes me back to the mid-90's. Every club/lounge would have tons of Jack and a shot or double shot was the poison of choice.

It's my favorite by a wide margin although I don't know much about Canadian offerings specifically.

Louis XIII is cognac isn't it?

A real man drinks beer ;)

Anything filtered through a spray-tan stained posing thong is good in my book.

Eagle Rare 17 was my favorite, but the hipsters and the market make it impossible to get. And it was $36, now it's over $800.
All of the Pappy Van Winkle's are amazing, but now over $2000 a bottle, so one shot is over $50 bucks. Coach is a lucky fuck for getting his bottle lol.
So for the stuff that's left:
Buffalo Trace was favorite sub $30 bottle, but now that's getting rare.
Four Roses Single Barrel is great - about 40-45 bucks.
George Dickel bottle in Bond is $40, and was 2019 bourbon of the year.
Blantons / Michters / Willet / Eagle Rare 10 all good choices too.

That's what I started on. I wanted to have "a drink", so I ordered Jack on the rocks. Got the shivers when I took first drink, then got used to it.
Once I found better bourbons, that shit went by the wayside.
But as far as shitty gimmick bourbons go, I will admit the Screwball Peanut Butter whiskey is super tasty.

Solid choice that’s widely available.

The good stuff is hard to get these days. Around here you have to win a lottery to have the opportunity to buy stuff like Pappy.

Yeah, it sucks from that perspective. Pappy is really really good.

Can't go wrong with that one.

Crown Royal. Technically not a bourbon but close enough.

I'm a fan of Whistle Pig.
I don't drink adult beverages but I do like this quote from Goldfinger!
Colonel Smithers : Have a little more of this rather disappointing brandy.
M : What's the matter with it?
James Bond : I'd say it was a 30-year-old fine, indifferently blended, sir... with an overdose of bon-bois.

Crown Royal. Technically not a bourbon but close enough.
Gross enough, not close enough.

It is very smooth. I don't care for most whiskey unless I chase it with something but Crown goes down easy like a cheap whore.

If you want to show up at a party with a bottle in your hand, this is a good choice that’s inexpensive but not cheap and that’s widely available.

As a heterosexual male, I make a point to never show up anywhere with a bottle of white wine.

Maker's is alright. Not what I would call the most pleasing Bourbon to the palate, but does the trick if running low on the good stuff. I actually mix Maker's with Coke (3:1 ratio) and it goes down easy.

With this particular bottle pictured, absolutely neat. These were about $2-300 shots
-
Couple different levels.
What I like, at least in Florida is hard to find. The Buffalo Trace line of Bourbon is almost never on the shelves. I did find a Walgreens of all places down the street that occasionally gets in a case of Buffalo Trace priced at $24 a bottle. On rare occasions someone I know will score a Blantons for me but it is a once a year type thing. Blantons retails for under $70 but the flippers have made it all but impossible to find in the wild like that. Eagle Rare is nice as well but never see it around here.
I found my taste for bourbon changes and what I used to like, like Makers Mark, Woodford Reserve, have lost their appeal.
Some of my favorites that I can find on most shelves are;
New Riff Single Barrell
Rare Breed
Russell Reserve 10 yr
Old Forester Statesman
4 Roses Small Batch
Horse Soldiers Small Batch (Some Special Forces guys opened up a restuaran/Distillery in St. Petersburg
What I have on hand on any given day
1.175 liter of Wild Turkey 101 for gatherings. Makes a good Old Fashioned, Cheap and has character
Buffalo Trace
Russells Reserve

Prosecco sparkling wine (think champagne, but cheaper) Bitches love that here. Don't think it's very well known in the US.
They gulp that down and soon after they'll be gulping your load. No homo

One alcoholic drink a day linked with reduced brain size
The research, using a dataset of more than 36,000 adults, revealed that going from one to two drinks a day was associated with changes in the brain equivalent to aging two years. Heavier drinking was linked with an even greater toll.
But according to a new study, alcohol consumption even at levels most would consider modest—a few beers or glasses of wine a week—may also carry risks to the brain. An analysis of data from more than 36,000 adults, led by a team from the University of Pennsylvania, found that light-to-moderate alcohol consumption was associated with reductions in overall brain volume.
The link grew stronger the greater the level of alcohol consumption, the researchers showed. As an example, in 50-year-olds, as average drinking among individuals increases from one alcohol unit (about half a beer) a day to two units (a pint of beer or a glass of wine) there are associated changes in the brain equivalent to aging two years. Going from two to three alcohol units at the same age was like aging three and a half years.
Going from zero to one alcohol units didn’t make much of a difference in brain volume, but going from one to two or two to three units a day was associated with reductions in both gray and white matter.

I doubt this. BS.
How would you even do a study like this? Do brain scans on 36,000 people? Not likely.

And while the researchers underscore that their study looked only at correlations ::)

I've had it a few times. It's on the sweet side for me. Lots of people rave about Woodford Reserve Double Oaked... I tried it a few times but for the same reason I just don't prefer it to the cheaper WR. Kind of a maple taste

Just had some Whistle Pig at dinner. I prefer Woodford.

I have 1 1/2 bottles of pappy 15, and probably 5 full bottles of blantons…I usually prefer buffalo trace or wild turkey 101 when it comes to bourbon.
Scotch on the other hand…I spend money on scotch!!

BT is a great bourbon, especially for the price point.
But I've always thought Pappy was on a different level, even pre-hype.

White Label. I’ve had all the big names. I’m a bit of a watch and beer snob, can certainly afford to be a bourbon snob as well, but can’t shake this stuff. Have it almost nightly.

I’m happy to hear that.
It’s like 17 bucks in Southern California.
At the end of the day, I’m a Glenmorangie scotch guy, I do hold a special place in my (proud American) heart for bourbon.
Beer is another story.

Beer IS another story. I'm fortunate to live in an area where we're surrounded by some of the top ranked breweries in the world. I think Treehouse up here is #1 in the world on some lists. Trillium gets super high rankings too.

Where have you been?
-
Then comes the zenith of man’s pleasure. Then comes the julep – the mint julep. Who has not tasted one has lived in vain. The honey of Hymettus brought no such solace to the soul; the nectar of the Gods is tame beside it. It is the very dream of drinks, the vision of sweet quaffings.
The Bourbon and the mint are lovers. In the same land they live, on the same food they are fostered. The mint dips infant leaf into the same stream that makes The Bourbon what it is. The corn grows in the level lands through which small streams meander. By the brook-side the mint grows. As the little wavelets pass, they glide up to kiss the feet of the growing mint, and the mint bends to salute them. Gracious and kind it is, living only for the sake of others. Like a woman’s heart it gives its sweetest aroma when bruised. Among the first to greet the spring, it comes. Beside gurgling brooks that make music in the fields, it lives and thrives. When the bluegrass begins to shoot its gentle sprays towards the sun, mint comes, and its sweetest soul drinks at the crystal brook. It is virgin then. But soon it must be married to old Bourbon. His great heart, his warmth of temperament, and that affinity which no one understands, demands the wedding.
How shall it be? Take from the cold spring some water, pure as angels are; mix it with sugar till it seems like oil. Then take a glass and crush your mint within it with a spoon – crush it around the borders of the glass and leave no place untouched. Then throw the mint away – it is the sacrifice. Fill with cracked ice the glass; pour in the quantity of Bourbon which you want. It trickles slowly through the ice. Let it have time to cool, then pour your sugared water over it. No spoon is needed; no stirring allowed- just let it stand a moment. Then around the brim place sprigs of mint, so that the one who drinks may find the taste and odor at one draft.
Then when it is made, sip it slowly. August suns are shining, the breath of the south wind is upon you. It is fragrant cold and sweet – it is seductive. No maidens kiss is tenderer or more refreshing, no maidens touch could be more passionate. Sip it and dream-it is a dream itself. No other land can give you so much sweet solace for your cares; no other liquor soothes you in melancholy days. Sip it and say there is no solace for the soul, no tonic for the body like old Bourbon whiskey.

A bottle of it is about 45 bucks so while it isnt cheap, its not going to break the bank. Its made in Charleston, SC and the minute i took a swig, i had to have it for my bar. Virgil Kaine is more known for their whiskey and some people avoid it due to its name but its a good Southern Lowcountry bourbon. Since i drink mostly coffee along with having a variety of fine spirits, i may buy a bottle every 4 months. Goes well with a maduro

Yes it is and it shouldn't be that hard to find in the late fall early winter when it's released. Most distilleries send out their allotments that time of year.

I absolutely hate malt liquor....its there to get you drunk cheaply.
Most of my spirits i keep at my bar are from the Hilton Head Distillery. I have Jocasse Gin, Aeromoor Vodka, and their Spiced Rum along with their Mountain Peak Expresso Rum occasionally. Im a big fan of the company and they provide a high quality product for an honest price made from locally sourced ingredients and i never get a chemical taste or wake up with a hangover. The other items i keep is of course the Virgil Kaine bourbon, Duncan Taylor 12 year aged whiskey, Amaro Di Toscana, and ABK6 VSOP cognac. I also keep ABK6 Ice cognac in the fridge.
Usually it takes about 8-12 months to go through a bottle as i mostly drink coffee but i like having a variety of items available when i want it. My wine collection is not really impressive but i do enjoy Radius Merlot and Vostra Prosecco for when i i have friends showing up for mimosas. The rest of my wine collection is more for show and filling up the slots on my bar.

Maker's is alright. Not what I would call the most pleasing Bourbon to the palate, but does the trick if running low on the good stuff. I actually mix Maker's with Coke (3:1 ratio) and it goes down easy.
Anything you like to sip neat? I've found that Four Roses Single Barrel Bourbon goes down smooth.

I prefer drinks neat specially when it comes to Scotch and Bourbon. Unfortunately, expensive brands generally taste better neat. Unfortunately, I have a bad habit of chewing ice which can be hard on one’s teeth. Cracked both my lower wisdom teeth that way and ended up needing gold crowns to fix them. This is a good reason for me to avoid ice in all drinks unless it is crushed like a smoothie.

Whenever I go for the expensive Bourbons, I try to have it neat in order to get its true flavor.

Do you ever chill bourbon or do you only drink it at room temperature? Johnny Walker recommends chilling flavored Bourbons which taste more like Liqueurs with an almost seem syrupy consistency.

Amen to that...if you have to mix your bourbon with something then you are drinking crap. While i do have mixed drinks, everything i have on my bar can be enjoyed by itself

A few years into the bourbon thing... Here's my take
I always have Wild Turkey Rare Breed 116 proof in my bar
Bench Mark came out with some bottom dwellers at 19 to 20 a bottle... full proof, Top Floor, single barrel are all strong
Buffalo Trace below $28 is a bargain
Wild Turkey 101 is a staple at $32 A HALF gallon
-
I have 1 1/2 bottles of pappy 15, and probably 5 full bottles of blantons…I usually prefer buffalo trace or wild turkey 101 when it comes to bourbon.
Scotch on the other hand…I spend money on scotch!!
Bench
I'm just waiting on an invitation
-
George Stagg made by Buffalo trace is pretty good
Woodford reserve
Garrison brothers single barrel select
Old forester

Old Forester 86 is swill
Statesman, 1910, 1920 is great. Statesman is always in my bar. I also have a 1910 doube oak at the moment
George Stagg is hard to find, never had it but I hear its good

Respectable.

Coholla….gross…pass the bannicas please.

I like 4 Roses. Less proof than other Bourbons so I can sip it for a couple of hours with a nice cigar...and still do other things after :)

I got some Banana Kush a few weeks ago.
A nice smooth high that isn't too heavy.

I was at a fundraiser event Saturday night in Tierre Verdie at the tampa Bay Watch annual ball. Met one of the family from the Woodford Reserve Distillery. Now I like Woodford Reserve and it is definitely respectable., I had to be honest with her and say I have it at my bar but I am more inclined with the Buffalo Trace offerings and Old Forester Statesman/ 1915. She told me as we were standing in line at the open bar that while she is 3 generations Woodford Reserve, she will drink Old Forester Statesman over Woodford any day. I think the bottom line is Bourban tastes are no different than Burger or Soda tastes. It's really about personal preference. If you like it, enjoy it.

You can't help it.. You are a Trump fan.. turn a Bourbon discussion into politics. If you can't handle my posts about your derangement that's cool.. but keep it on the political page.

Looked it up OF Statesmen is a nice looking bottle. Might have to give it try.
I've said it before, never cared for Woodford that much. Drinkable for sure, but no "wow" factor for me.

Got some Wild Turkey "Rare Breed" I will try a little later, any reviews from getbiggers?

It's an ok pour but to me a little weak in the taste.
What I mean is the flavor or taste of it doesn't last long.

I have to laugh every time liquor or watches come up on a getbig thread everyone here is a millionaire. I looked up one bottle of whiskey and it's over $100 bucks. Really, that's your choice of booze and you can afford it week after week ? I bet half of you snobs pour the expensive stuff in with some pop drink while sitting in your mom's house typing how you like only premium booze.

Feel free to ask Grape or chaos. I have over 70 bottles of bourbon and rye including a Pappy 12 and 15 :)
....Only one watch though.

It's one of my favorites but at 116 proof I use an ice cube.

$100 for a bottle is not really very much for this kind of thing, and I think most people who are "into" bourbon aren't drinking a whole bottle of it each week (unless they're a borderline alcoholic).
For me a nice bottle lasts me months.
-
Bought a 750ml bottle of Tennesee bourbon at Trader Joe's for $15.
Aged 6 months. Seriously.
I've read some reviews of this that say it's complete shite but really, I thought it wasn't bad.
Not bad at all.

People post reviews and they say they can detect all these subtle flavors (notes?) in a whiskey.
Like this for example:
a nose full of stale popcorn next to pecan Sandies with a dose of cinnamon, a little bit of sweet grass, and a touch of leather. There’s a vanilla cream pie note on the palate that leads toward more leather, fresh floral notes, and choco-cherry tobacco. The mid-palate peaks with that tobacco spice and sweetness
or this one...
Sweet spice, stewed pears with saffron, and a chocolate cream pie nose greet you. The taste leans into vanilla hard candies with almond-encrusted toffees, soft cedar, and a hint of potting soil. Pears and soft apricot-laced tobacco leaves drive the mid-palate towards more pear and hint of that soil, tobacco, and nutty toffee.
All bullshite.
A true tasting of whiskey is this:
Gasoline flavor with a touch of lighter fluid and a finish of kerosene

a nose full of stale popcorn soiled thong next to pecan Sandies with a dose of cinnamon manfat, a little bit of sweet grass sweat wrung from Bhank's curling onesie, and a touch of leather ass. There’s a cream pie note on Matt Canning's palate that leads toward more leather, fresh floral notes, and choco-cherry tobacco ass juice contaminated astroglide. If I may broaden it to include all whisky, then it has to be Ardbeg 10. Made whisky sours tonight (is a 'no homo' required here?) with a cheap Chivas Regal, but they were outstanding.

Honestly I don't know how y'all can drink hard liquor- the stuff burns like draino going down the hatch. Wine is a different story though ;D

A whiskey sour done right is a kick ass drink - even for people who normally don't drink whiskey

'tis true.
And it SHOULD be made with a cheaper whiskey too.
So, all good here.

Chivas 12 is cheap as fuck here, mate. It's a common blended whisky that goes for the equivalent of 20 dollars. Even their 18 is less than 100 bucks.

Chivas 12 is $32 here.
18 is $79
Chivas isn't bourbon though.
Cheap is under $20 like Rebel Yell $15.99
For Scotch how about Clan Mcgregor $19.99 for 1.75 liter?

Haha, yeah, but I didn't think we were talking 'Shizzo' cheap. Good Islay single malts cost quite a bit more than that but I do think they are worth it. Chivas is great for get-togethers and making cocktails, and it doesn't break the bank.
I don't think I've ever tried Clan Mcgregor, actually. Will look for it next time I'm in the UK. Any blend around that price should be great for mixing, though.
