Terrible thing to be homeless.

Yes I give, but only to native homless people as they get the least help. I like the ones with quiet dignity who just sit quietly witha cup head bowed, when they hear teh jingle theyseem so appreciative of it.

My dad every winter buys lots of gloves, hats thermal vests etc and gives them to the hostels to give out free.

Here's a funny for ya. Back in uni, one of the lads was doing the errands downtown, and in a fit of generosity, gave some guy a fiver. He later ran into the same guy an hour later at the liquor store buying top-shelf scotch, while he was only buying CC. Took him 8 drinks before we could get him to laugh about it.

I have before.....but it's rare that I do. If I feel the guy is sincere and is going to use my money wisely I have no trouble trying to help. In fact I would feel guilty if I didn't. I have spoken to many homeless guys and they eventually admit that they head to a bar after they collect money all day. They are (95% of the time) healthy enough to work but don't. They often are healthy enough to run to the local bar or corner store to waste your money on alcohol. I have have had homeless guys lie to my face just so they could get some cash out of me. That alcohol addiction was calling. Sometimes people are so mentally beaten down that drinking is their way around the pain. It numbs the pain. They are so mentally beat up that they would rather do nothing but hold a sign on the side of the road asking for your cash. The thought of working a job for minimum wage has left them long ago. They will give you every excuse in the world why they cannot physically perform work. It's a lie that they have convinced themselves is true.

I have a friend that was hit by a train when he was a kid and he lived. He has tramatic brain injuries and this guy rides his bike every where. He broke is arm once and couldn't ride the bike so he pushed himself around town in a wheelchair with one arm. He has worked out at the gym for years. That's where I met him. He has had a rough life. He has been mugged several times. He undrestands that women don't want him and that gets him down. But he doesn't abuse alcohol or do drugs.

Another good thing to do is buy a few hamburgers for a couple of dollars at a fast food place and give it to them.
