Coup attempt in Iraq put down?
« on: September 29, 2006, 10:05:15 PM »
We know there is something like a 48 hour martial law in baghdad.

underground media is saying there was a coup attempt that we helped put down.

is this just a rumor, or is the world media reporting something we're not hearing here?  If it's just a rumor, why the sudden martial law?

are these folks locked up at home, right when rammadan is starting and they want to go to the mosque?

i've never seen the iraqis pissed off.  what do they do to protest?  sit-ins? letter-writing campaigns?

i just surf the 911 boards.  people there will often post links from world media.  sometimes our media will ignore something incredibly huge to the rest of the world, but we'll see something like some bullshit youtube dancing midget video clip  monster waste of news time.

No source - post from another board:

u.s media is now reporting more details on what i reported late last night, namely that there was an attempted coup against the government of pm maliki in baghdad last night.
according to u.s. media reporting, it was a bodyguard of adnan al-dulaimi, who is the head of the largest sunni bloc in the iraqi parliament, who was planning a major suicide car bomb attack inside the so called heavily fortified green zone.
the spin continues that the bodyguard, khudhir fardhan, was a member of al-quaeda in iraq.
briefly mentioned in western reports is the fact that seven others have been arrested in connection with the plot.
the u.s. military states that mr. fardhan was being detained in connection with the planning of a major multi car bombing attack inside baghdad's international zone, otherwisw known as the green zone.
according to the u.s. press, al-dulaimi cooperated fully with u.s. authorities, stating that he didn't really know mr. fardhan, as he had only been employed with him for about a month.
now let's tell the truth about what's going on...................... ....
al-jazeera has an interview with al-dulaimi wherein he condems the u.s. military for surrounding his home with no less than 10 humvees, and went through his home with dogs.
he also demanded the release of his guard, saying that there was nothing but the illusion that mr. fardhan was involved in terrorist activities or any coup attempt.
u.s. military spokesman lt. colonel barry johnson said that he has no reason to dispute al-dulaimi's claims but could not comment further on an ongoing investigation.
reports from turkey, syria, and iran all claim an attempted coup by a faction of the iraqi security forces was put down in a fierce gun battle, with at least 8 members of the rebel security forces being arrested after setting off car bombs inside the green zone.
this fits with the earlier reports by western reporters who were in the green zone who said they heard explosions and gunfire coming from the direction of maliki's presidential estate, and they were told by u.s. personnel to "get off the streets".
also on friday, president bush held a telephone conference with maliki on how to best pacify baghdad. white house spokesman tony snow claimed the call was merely to wish maliki best wishes for the ramadan season.
so, it comes down to who's version of events that you believe.
u.s. press claims it was a mere attempt to car bomb something inside the green zone.
all other reports suggest it was an actual coup attempt, as al-arabiya tv reports former interior minister hussein ali kemal saying that the security situation in the green zone as rapidly deteriorating. the curfew was placed in effect according to ali kemal, to prevent further terrorist atacks upon the civilian population inside the green zone.
the new interior minister, jawad al-balani apparently has been allowing renegade forces opposed to maliki's government into the secured areas for some time.
the impetus behind all of the discord seems to be a plan by maliki's government to partition iraq into 3 autonomous regions, with baghdad and eastern iraq remaining the true iraq state, and basically conceding the al-anbar provinces to the west to the insurgency. the kurdish fighters in the north have declared a truce against turkey, in the hopes that the part of the plan to allow them to declare their independence from iraq will go forward, in effect, creating a third state in the northern region of iraq called kurdistan.
the iraqi military is demanding this plan not be implemented, saying that it would cause turkey to launch an invasion of their country from the north, as the turkish government has repeatedly stated they will never allow a kurdish state on their border.
more to come, i'm checking everything i can..................... ..

watch the latest on the attempted coup on msnbc.com new video has gov't officials admitting to attempted coup....................

furthermore, this is actually the 2nd coup attempt since july of this year. eli lake of the tel aviv daily, writing for the new york sun, reported on aug 7th of an attempted coup by baathist officers loyal to the saddam regime apparently trying to stage a military coup while pm maliki was on a state visit to kuwait.
the plotters were rounded up on july 5th, with the help of american military authorities.
mr. maliki was scheduled to leave kuwait and head for amman jordan for an official state visit, but instead rushed back to baghdad. when u.s. authorities and maliki's own staff were questioned about what was going on, they were told that maliki's trip had been cut short due to a security situation.
get the picture now?
