I once read there was a guy somewhere with the name Muhammad x 26 times in a row. Now that's dedication.

Didn't you sign the waiver acknowledging the danger of posting in a Hulkotron thread without his express written permission, "thegayflamer"?

Not true, Muhammad and it's spelling versions are not first.

Quote
But even when the different spellings are collated, Muhammad is not Britain’s most popular name. The latest research putting Mohammed at the top of the baby name lists is based on responses from users of the website BabyCentre. According to the most recent figures from the Office of National Statistics, though, Muhammad was only the 16th most popular boy’s name in England and Wales, and the 52nd most popular in Scotland last year. In previous years, newspapers have arrived at the conclusion that Mohammed is the most popular name by adding together figures for all the different spellings. But it has been pointed out that if we did the same for other popular names, such as Oliver and Ollie or Henry and Harry, the Mos would not get a look in.

Since your sister is taken, any chance I could have a go with your mom?

Maybe, but those examples for white people names don't seem very strong to me.

Muhammad and Mohammad or however else it's spelled are different spellings of what is phonetically the same name.

Nobody is literally named Ollie, maybe not "nobody" but there can't be very many, it's short for Oliver, like Michael and Mike or my favorite, the 30 year-old man-children who call themselves "Mikey".

Similarly Harry is either a nickname for Henry (e.g. Prince Harry) or they're two different names entirely.

My list is according to the Office of National Statistics data if you merge spellings.  It was widely reported:

http://www.babycentre.co.uk/a25011625/top-baby-boy-names-2014
http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/muhammed-really-is-most-popular-baby-name-in-the-uk--as-is-mohammed-muhammad-9895605.html

I assume most getbiggers know more about statistics than the ONS though.

I don't have a horse in this race but the argument against merging multiple spellings based on nicknames doesn't hold water.  "Jim" is not an alternative spelling for "James", for example, it's a nickname.  Very few people are literally named Jim, it is not among the top 100 names in the USA or the UK.

An appropriate example of an analog would be merging "Jeffrey" and "Geoffrey", not "Ollie" and "Oliver".  Do you actually know a substantial number of people with the legal name Ollie, and how is it an alternative spelling for Oliver?

Why would anyone want to name their kid Charlie, Harry or Oscar??

Might as well go with hunter, billybob, or Cletus
