Study:

For strength I agree 100%.

There are some good machine assistance exercises, but for strength you want to use free weights 90% of the time.

Strength just doesn't carry over from machine movements to free weights.

I hope they didn't spend too much money for this study.  Casual observance confirms this.

It's all to get more funding for more studies.

Pick stuff up and put it down. It's not rocket science. The more I read about exercise physiology the less I know. One thing for sure. In the words of Jeff Preston, "Until pigs know how to fly you don't need to be a scientist to be a bodybuilder."  No need to google for answers from questionable  and conflicting sources.

There is just no way that sitting in machines will build athletic attributes. I couldn't imagine sitting in machines for all my exercises.  Bill Starr was right. If you want to build a better athlete using weights to supplement you could do it with three exercises. It would be an Olympic lift like a power clean, squat and a press.

I also prefer free weights, but it depends on each day of the week, and in what mood do I have. Anyway, before making any basic training, I do prefer to use Chirp wheel, because it can help with adjusting my spinal muscles and stretch them up. I also use it for my sides as well. You can visit this escapemonthly resource to get more useful information about this workout stuff.

aside from a bit of balance, i believe resistance is resistance and machines can offer a bit more safety for those prone to injury...but i agree people need more rest not more training, especially if not juicing...

Standing on your feet working out is always superior to sitting.

All the old time lifters knew this or at least practiced it.

Both are effective and powerful. Both give us strength and endurance, Weight machines mainly focus on the movement pattern while free weight workout is quite natural and with no restriction. You can get stronger without the use of machines at home and maintain your level of fitness.
Free weight is better for developing muscles as it activates more muscles as compared to the machine.

I prefer free weights mostly because of the variety of exercises you can do. If training in a Gym i will make use of machines but i will not get better gains just by using some machine rather than a barbell.
The only exceptions for another stimulus is cables but even cables will not build thick muscles like a barbell or Dumbbells.
A good example is chest flys with cables, a great exercise but it will not stimulate growth in the deep muscle fibres like a basic flat or incline barbell press.

spot on here however as you age with injuries some things you need to move around & change it but that is the beauty of free weight training you have so many variations on each exercise, a basic squat can be several free weight exercises.

There are almost endless variations with dumbbells just by changing the angle.
