Which one of these sources would you say is more accurate?
« on: March 10, 2007, 12:05:50 AM »
We would like to find out the % of Americans who believe 9/11 is an inside job.  We are having a disagreement about which is more likely to produce accurate results.

Choice 1 is Scripps poll, a widely accepted and reputable polling firm which uses well-worded questions, polls a wide group covering proportionate numbers of rfactors.  They publish their findings with all scientific analysis.
http://www.scrippsnews.com/911poll

OR

Choice 2 is an anonymous guy named ozmo that another anonymous guy, beach Bum, talked to and said he talks to lots of people all over and it never came up.

Absurd.  Absolutely ridiculous.  I think Ozmo is a much better gauge.  He previously indicated he travels quite a bit and NOBODY talks about this conspiracy nonsense.  It is primarily an internet phenomenon.  I deal with lots of people too and with the exception of two of my softball teammates, it has never come up.

Now, you have two choices.  Which do you feel would provide you with a better estimation of the number of Americans who believe 911 is an inside job?

1) Scippt scientific poll
OR
2) stranger talks to other stranger about worldwide voluntary "bringing it up" with strangers they meet.

okay, you two have made your point clear.  You make fun of me but cannot back up why you believe Scripps is wrong.

I would like the rest of the political board folks to weigh in on this question now please.

I don't know about the  1/3 part...but I would think a poll is the most accurate.

Are you saying that polling ten people is more accurate than the 1,000 they polled?

Wait, so polls using LARGE samples are inaccurate, but using ten people is more accurate?

You don't put stock in the large poll with well-selected rpopulation representations and a team of statisticians computing the results, but you do believe in the little, unscientific one on getbig?

Wow, you just embarassed yourself man.

At least 240 backs his position up with facts and or references...he never presents an argument without some kind of research to base it on. I don't know which one of you guys are right...but it makes for a much better argument when you have SOMETHING to base your opinions on.

I bet you want me to stop.  Team BruceBum doesn't understand statistics.  They think polling 10 is more accurate than polling 1000, and they're both less accurate than "some guy named ozmo said..."

Team BruceBum decided to throw a red herring => "Let's do our own poll!"

Team BruceBum is tearing up.  Seriously, they are at the point of tears laughing at a man who understands stats while they don't.

Man.

I am trying hard to picture a 38 year old man falling alseep, laughing to tears about a poll he doesn't understand.

Creepy.

Scripps interviewed over 1000 people, using various demographics to ensure a fair representation.

Using "a few getbiggers" is a tad less reliable.  Using "twatjoe blog" - also less reliable.

It's a cute red herring you're throwing though.  "240 made a point that I cannot argue, so I'll start my OWN poll, even though I just said polls are less accurate than one stranger's memory of conversations with strangers"

Just because we are not  die hard republicans does not mean we are all liberal. I agree and disagree with issues on both sides.

Lies!

Actually BRUCE, multiple-administration ensures reliability in polling.  Polling 1000 people will have more reliable results than your twatjoe blog, unless you have 1001 respondants, which you check for population dispersement consistent with the actual population, which will be hard to do on an internet blog.

Also, in the future, any articles featuring polls posted by Bruce or beachBum should be instantly discarded.

You see, they love polls when it makes their point.  but they don't believe polls when it says something they disagree with.
