Ocasio-Cortez Is Embarrassingly Wrong About ‘Death Panels’
Townhall.com ^ | December 4, 2018 | Justin Haskins
Posted on 12/4/2018, 3:47:56 PM by Kaslin

Democrat Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who will represent New York in Congress in January, has once again proven she’s more interested in misleading Americans about single-payer health care than having an honest debate that’s based on the facts.

On Sunday, Ocasio-Cortez engaged in a brief Twitter sparring match with Jim Hanson, the president of the Security Studies Group. The exchange began after Hanson commented that under government-managed health care, “Democrat Socialist overlords” would decide “who will live and who will die,” adding “#DeathPanels rock,” at the end of his message.

Ocasio-Cortez, a vocal supporter of Sen. Bernie Sanders’ (I-VT) “Medicare for All” proposal—a plan that would transform the current U.S. health care system into a single-payer model—responded to Hanson by alleging that “we have for-profit ‘death panels’ now: they are companies + boards saying you’re on your own bc they won’t cover a critical procedure or medicine.”

Ocasio-Cortez’s claim that health insurance companies essentially act as “death panels” for choosing to cover certain treatments and not others is a highly erroneous, reckless comment. For starters, health insurance companies are heavily regulated—some of the most heavily regulated companies in the country, in fact—and they are already forced under the Affordable Care Act to cover “essential health” treatments, including emergency services, hospitalization, and some non-emergent treatments, like substance abuse services. States have numerous additional “essential health mandates.” The National Conference of State Legislatures notes “there are more than 1,900 such statutes among all 50 states; another analysis tallies more than 2,200 individual statute provisions, adopted over a 30+ year period.

It’s simply not true that there are all sorts of serious health problems health insurers don’t cover, which is clearly what Ocasio-Cortez was suggesting in her Twitter post.

Second, the “death panels” descried by Ocasio-Cortez aren’t “death panels” at all. Death panels are composed of government bureaucrats or policymakers who decide which health care treatments will be covered in a single-payer or government-run health care system. The reason they have been labeled “death panels” is because under many single-payer proposals, the government is the only insurer, which means it has complete power to decide which services will be covered. There are no other options in a single-payer system; either the government will choose to pay for your care or it won’t, and if it chooses not to, then you’re out of luck—unless, of course, you are a millionaire like Bernie Sanders.

Ocasio-Cortez says that because health insurers can choose not to cover certain services, that means they have “death panels,” too, but that’s totally false. In a true market-based system, if my health insurance company were to refuse to offer me a plan covering all of the services I’m most concerned about, I could simply go to another health insurer who would. If enough people want a particular health service covered, insurers would surely offer it; that’s how markets work. Since Ocasio-Cortez majored in economics, she should understand that basic, universal economic principle. If there is demand for a product or service, someone out there will supply it.

However, if we’re going to apply the term “death panel” in such a way that it can be used to describe anyone that makes health insurance too expensive, then the federal government is already the country’s biggest “death panel.” No one has done more to raise the cost of health insurance in the past decade than President Barack Obama and the Democrat-led Congress that passed the Affordable Care Act in 2010.

Since the Obamacare exchanges first opened in 2013, health insurance premiums have doubled. Even worse, Obamacare deductibles are so high, most people can’t afford to use the health insurance they purchased. HealthPocket reports the average maximum out-of-pocket costs for a family enrolled in an Obamacare Bronze Plan, the cheapest plan available on the exchanges, is greater than $14,000.

Ocasio-Cortez likely knows much of this, of course. But she, like many other politicians promoting single-payer health care, will say anything to trick people into supporting their government-run proposal. When you can’t win debates based on the facts, resorting to deception is the only option remaining.

OCASIO-CORTEZ: ‘INEVITABLE’ GLOBAL WARMING GOVERNANCE WILL CREATE ‘ECONOMIC, SOCIAL, AND RACIAL JUSTICE’
‘It’s inevitable that we can use the transition to 100% renewable energy as the vehicle to truly deliver and establish economic, social, and racial justice in the United States of America’

New York City’s incoming socialist congresswoman, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, says there will only be benefits, and no costs, to passing a raft of new climate change laws. In particular, she said, a new system of global warming governance will usher in “economic, social, and racial justice.”

suggesting the federal government should nationalize technology the automaker Tesla developed following its receipt of tax subsidies.

“As a matter of fact, it's not just possible that we will create jobs and economic activity by transitioning to renewable energy, but it's inevitable that we are going to create jobs,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “It's inevitable that we're going to create industry, and it's inevitable that we can use the transition to a hundred percent renewable energy as the vehicle to truly deliver and establish economic, social and racial justice in the United States of America.”

The comments came during a recent Bernie Sanders-hosted symposium on global warming.

The incoming congressman did not elaborate on how laws aimed at curbing global warming would create “economic, social, and racial justice.”

Ocasio-Cortez has likened her envisioned global warming programs to another New Deal, or as she calls it, a “Green New Deal.”

“I believe that the progressive movement is the only movement that has answers right now,” she said. “We're the only ones that are drawing from the lessons of history, from Franklin Delano Roosevelt, from some of the most ambitious projects that we have pursued in American history. And that truly again is the scale that it's going to take.”

Ocasio-Cortez also suggested the federal government should nationalize Tesla’s technology, following the company’s receipt of tax subsidies. [Video]

It’s past time, she said, that the government gets its “due” for this “investment.”

“I think that there's so much work that has been done and there are some outlying questions, especially when it comes to investment in technologies, when we as a public choose to invest in private — when we as a public choose to invest in new technologies, we deserve a return on that investment,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “And for far too long we gave money to Tesla, we gave money to a ton of people, and we got no return on our investment that the public made in creating technologies. And it's about time that we get our due, because it's the public that funded and financed a lot of innovative technologies and that's another, you know, way to go."

Ocasio-Cortez fires back at Trump Jr: Keep trolling, we have subpoena power next year

Democratic Rep.-elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (N.Y.) fired back at Donald Trump Jr. on Friday after the president’s eldest son shared a meme implying that her democratic socialist views would lead to Americans eating dogs.

“I have noticed that Junior here has a habit of posting nonsense about me whenever the Mueller investigation heats up,” Ocasio-Cortez said on Twitter. “Please, keep it coming Jr - it’s definitely a ‘very, very large brain’ idea to troll a member of a body that will have subpoena power in a month.”

“Have fun!” she added.

Her tweet was in response to a two-paneled meme shared by Trump Jr. on Instagram on Thursday. The top photo of the meme showed an image of Ocasio-Cortez along with the text: “Why are you so afraid of a socialist economy?”

The second photo featured in the meme shows President Trump and a blunt answer: “Because Americans want to walk their dogs, not eat them.”

Trump Jr. captioned the meme that he shared with 1.5 million Instagram followers, saying: “It’s funny cuz it’s true!!!" The post has since garnered more than 66,000 likes and more than 2,500 comments as of Friday afternoon.

Since pulling off this one of this year’s biggest upsets during primary season when she unseated Rep. Joe Crowley (D-N.Y.), Ocasio-Cortez has become a top target for many conservative pundits and lawmakers for her policy proposals and democratic socialist views.

The 29-year-old Democrat asked on Twitter on Sunday why she has already come under fire by so many top Republicans despite having yet to take office officially.

"I’m not even sworn in yet. Don’t y’all have jobs to do?" she tweeted on Sunday.

Yes, ignore the elephant in the room and not the republican elephant.  Every time she opens her mouth you know you are going to be shocked by the ignorance that comes out.  The people in her district must be real geniuses to have voted for her to represent them.

Ocasio-Cortez finds Amazon’s HQ2 in NYC ‘extremely concerning’

Queens residents are “outraged” at Amazon’s plans to build part of its second headquarters in Long Island City, according to Rep.-elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

The Democratic Socialist, who cruised to victory in the midterm elections after beating Rep. Joe Crowley (D-Queens) in an upset primary win in June, fired off a series of tweets Monday night into Tuesday regarding the blockbuster plans.

“We’ve been getting calls and outreach from Queens residents all day about this. The community’s response? Outrage,” Ocasio-Cortez, who officially takes office in January, tweeted.

The 29-year-old went on to say: “Amazon is a billion-dollar company. The idea that it will receive hundreds of millions of dollars in tax breaks at a time when our subway is crumbling and our communities need MORE investment, not less, is extremely concerning to residents here.”

Isn't it disconcerting when enormously wealthy corporations are wooed by tax breaks? In Oregon, Nike continues to get big tax breaks by threating to move their operation elsewhere. "I really think this is a game-changing moment when a single company can create a special session and have everyone fall all over themselves to vote for it," Caleb said. Here's the flip side. More than 8,000 Nike employees and contract workers were employed at its headquarters in 2013. Today that number is closer to 12,000.Jun 15, 2017. The company (Amazon) now employs about 40,000 employees in Seattle, up from 5,000 in 2010. Now it is by far the largest employer in the city. Under Amazon's current plans, there will be room in Seattle for more than 55,000 Amazonians at the beginning of next decade.Aug 23, 2017.

Imagine how this boosts the economy of the areas where these companies are located. How many employees do they expect to have in Queens?

The "flip side" is exactly why they get the breaks.

Are we getting flippin' crazy?  ;D

Tax breaks in exchange for jobs is pretty common practice and has been for quite sometime. It is not so much to make the rich richer as it's to grow an areas economy. No matter how much benefit is in this, a lot of folks hate it. But think about it, it is not just about creating thousands of well paid jobs. Those wage earners spread their money around creating more jobs for people in other occupations. Look at it like it is an upside-down pyramid. Of course when these colossal employers crash and burm, it can bankrupt entire communities.

Oregon has been a huge player in the lumber industry for decades. Whole towns were built to supply the needs of the people working for the town lumber mill. When the mills close, there are no jobs to retreat to, so people are forced to find employment in bigger cities. Doing so, they either commute to their jobs or move closer to them. Small town America has been becoming extinct ever since the gold rush days. In their place are ever expanding suburbs....urban sprawl, along with which comes all the big city problems.

A lot of these people are Trump supporters, because historically there as been little hope for anything better or anyone they trusted to fix things. Someone new with fresh ideas is their best hope. Trump examples the kind of huckster they are destined to desperately fall for. In the case of Trump, he's never been where they are, not even close. He doesn't give two shits about these people except for their vote. All he has to do is convince them he's on their side and they sign on. It makes me incredibly sad to think how he will eventually be exposed for who he is, an egotistical, bombastic charlatan. What an incredible disappointment to those who pledged their absolute support for Trump.

Trump obviously speaks to these people in their language by telling them everything they want to hear, even so far as to pretend he's one of them. Religious folk, who are outraged by their belief that many people act despicably and immorally and yet they somehow manage to ignore that Trump is a model of the exact bad behavior they rail against. -Reminds me of the phrase; "Do as I say and not as I do" which harkens back to 1689. Are we destined to be at opposite polls where there is no place to try to understand one another's views? "SAD"

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez reveals Jewish ancestry at Hanukkah celebration

Hanukkah celebrates the miracle that oil thought to be enough for only one day burned instead for eight. So the Jewish festival of lights is also, in a way, a celebration of surprise.

A temple in Queens got a small dose of surprise on Sunday - the final night of Hanukkah - when Rep.-elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the New York Democrat with a knack for dramatic flourish, told those gathered to light the menorah that her ancestors were Jewish.

‘‘One of the things that we discovered about ourselves is that a very, very long time ago, generations and generations ago, my family consisted of Sephardic Jews,’’ Ocasio-Cortez said. These are Jews who settled in the Middle East, North Africa and southern Europe after the Jewish diaspora. They were expelled from Spain in 1492.

The sad thing - she is such a communist ditzy girl - but in NYC doesn’t matter

She is considered a scholar and an intellectual by many in that voting base up there.

She'll get exposed badly once the job starts.

Conway says Ocasio-Cortez is '29-year-old who doesn't seem to know much about anything'

White House counselor Kellyanne Conway mocked Rep.-elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y) during an appearance on Fox News on Tuesday, calling her a "29-year-old congresswoman who doesn't seem to know much about anything."

Conway's criticism came during an interview on "America's Newsroom" about possible successors to White House chief of staff John Kelly. Conway criticized Ocasio-Cortez for describing Kelly as a liar.

"[Kelly] is in his fifth decade of public service, and this country owes him a debt of gratitude, not the nonsense that has been spewed about him recently from the left, and from this 29-year-old congresswoman who doesn't seem to know much about anything when you ask her basic concepts about the economy, or the Middle East, or military funding," Conway told anchor Bill Hemmer.

"[It's] really embarrassing. And for her to even use a slur against him yesterday - I won't repeat her name or the slur," Conway said.

"Let me stand up for Gen. John Kelly. He has done a magnificent job for this country for almost 50 years, including here at the White House as our chief of staff for about a year and a half."

Ocasio-Cortez in a Sunday tweet accused Kelly of having been "straight up exposed for lying" about Rep. Frederica Wilson (D-Fla.), who the congresswoman-elect said was owed an apology.

Kelly referred to Wilson in October last year as an "empty barrel" and charged she had boasted about securing funding for a new FBI field office in her Miami-area district during its opening ceremony. No video evidence could be found of Wilson making the claim.

"John Kelly was straight up exposed for lying about @RepWilson in comments aimed at discrediting her," Ocasio-Cortez wrote to her 1.55 million followers on Twitter. "He absolutely owes her an apology, and his refusal to do so isn't a sign of strength - it's cowardice."
