The guy was WWF champ for 2,135 days in the late 70s to early 80s. Beat everybody, from Valentine to Steele to Graham, even Hogan.

Then Vince comes up with the Hogan gimmick, after seeing the publicity stills of Hogan and Stallone(Rocky 3 was shot in 81 so Vince knew it would make Hogan and WWF famous), so first pulls a Montreal with Backlund, where he tells Backlund's manager to throw in the towel when Backlund, an NCAA champion wrestler gets put in the bullshit "camel clutch". The crowd boos and knows Backlund got screwed, so a rematch is scheduled but Vince Jr. pulls a gimmick where Iron Sheik hits Backlund with some "Persian Club" outside the ring and Hogan gets to replace the fucking champion against the Sheik due to injury? WTF? And Vince forces Backlund to endorse Hogan on TV spots to replace him? Then Hogan who can't wrestle his way out a paper bag gets out of the camel clutch to win championship in MSG and we know the rest.

It was because Bob was Vince Sr's champ and Vince took out whatever he had against his father on Bob.

Backlund, always a class act, never got bitter and talked a bunch of shit like all the other former wrestlers that claimed they were screwed by Vince after making MILLIONS.

Fuck Montreal and Bret Hart, Bob Backlund was SCREWED!!!!!

Agree. He bought the business off Vince SR for 1 dollar and transformed it into a global conglomerant.

All agreed. Backlund was a necessary casualty of progress. Just like shoemakers were a casualty of the Industrial Revolution though not as relevant.. Machiavelli style. Still got screwed.
