Actually, more and more wine makers are boxing some of their wine and they're  not bad.  Not like the old days.  It's economical and it stores much better than a bottle after being opened since there's no air introduced.

Best Red my wife and I have had is Primal Roots. It's technically a "blend" and the only way to get me to have a glass with dinner 2x a week. She says it fights cancer, good for my heart blah blah...

I love my whiskey but since I'm trying to lean out, I have to give it all up for awhile being that its REALLY hard to have just one drink  ;D

There is a local winery I occasionally patronize.  The wine is adequate and not to expensive.   I finished off a bottle last night

So you're saying you want something sweet, semi-sweet, or semi dry?  Maybe a Moscato or a Beaujolais which are somewhat light.  A port would be significantly heavier because it's fortified What was the variety you tried and didn't like?
Title: Re: red wine..
Post by: WOOO on December 05, 2013, 02:23:04 AM
you also need to taste something new at least 15 times to train your taste buds to appreciate it.... try pairing a wine with food that you really like (based on the wine)...

i thought you were an old man like me bench? it always surprises me when people haven't tried something as mundane as red wine before... i grew up in a french household and can remember having a bit of wine at least once a week from age 6 on (as far back as i can remember)... obviously not a lot then but we were always encouraged to have about a quarter cup with our big saturday night family dinner (to be able to toast)

I hate red wine too, but here is one that isn't dry or taste like leather:

Riunite Lambrusco - Red

Palate
"Riunite Lambrusco has a fairly simple taste, much sweeter than most red wines with weak tannins and flavors of cherry, berry, and perhaps a little plum. Red wines are typically served warmer, but Riunite Lambrusco is best served very cold. Be advised also that this wine is slightly carbonated, another difference from standard red wines."

Try a blend like Primal Roots or Apothic Red, both are really good IMO. BTW, I'm not sure if you know this but should always let your wine breath for at least 10 minutes before you start drinking it. Improves the flavor 10 fold. I have been made to like wine (wife says its heart healthy blah blah) but then after trying 10 different kids I finally found a couple I can honestly say I like. I also found that it really helps digestion especially if I eat something with Gluten.

Both of those are full-bodied, so I doubt he'd care for them either (maybe down the road as  the palate develops).  They'd go good with the wild game he slaughters and grills  ;D

Need to know what he had and didn't like to make any real suggestions.

To me they all taste like leather. And I tried over 100 different red wines. Don't like rosé, white or champagne either. Only wine pallatable for me is non-alcoholic carbonated fruit and herb drinks, called children's wine.  :)

I've tasted a red Greek wine that I hated because it was too weak and syrupy. Maybe that would be an option?

I to be fair I haven't tried the black box platinum you posted, but I have tried a slew of box wines. Just bought a House Wine Cabernet today to try out.

A good 12 bottle of wine for me would be

Joel Gott 815 Cab
Sterling Vintners Collection Merlot $9.99
19 Crimes Shiraz  $9.99
Menage a Trois Cab $12
Ste Chateau Michelle Cab $12
