RACK Deads once a month??
« on: November 17, 2006, 05:42:18 AM »
A bb friend of mine told me to add more thickness to my back.  He said to incorporate rack deads once every few weeks as this is more for mass, i.e. taking the quads out of the equation.  Would you agree?  Plus, if I did str8 leg for hammys on tuesday and have back today, this is a great option?  Here's what he outlined:

barbell rows.over had 5 x 6
lat pull wide 3 x failure
lowcable rows 3 x 6 to 10
underhand pulldowns 3 x 8 to 12
rack deads 4 x 4 to 6

what do you think....either this or swap rack deads for conventional going 12, 8,8,6,6,4 then back to 5x5 and a max single next week.

you're a young man so there's no reason for you not to pull your deads off the floor every week, you are also very, very thin and slim so take it slow, good luck.

rack deads won't do jack shit to help your deadlift max, if you want to increase your pull from the floor train it from the floor and off blocks to INCREASE the range of motion and squat deep, those two movements will increase your pull.

Feel free to include DL's twice a week, every week, and make them the first order of business in your workout. That is, start with DL's, as this is a major mass and power builder. No reason to have them last, like in the program you listed, with some of those  other unneeded exercises. The usually position for power rack partial DL's is little below knee height. Lot's of guy's have trouble with the lower back when lifting from the floor, that's the main reason (shin hitting & extended stretch, leaning too far forward also, etc) for beginning from a higher position. No benefit of doing DL's will be lost if training for muscle size, unless your a PL'er who's main concern is a total lift. Remember that with DL's, you are holding the bar in a stable position, while the lower body does the actually raising to a standing position.  Might even try setting the pin's on the rack to about 3-4 inches from the top and start the exercise from there. A great total power and size builder. Most guy's will use at least  100lbs more than a normal DL. That would be included with the knee starting position in the workout.

Might try:

DL...if you do the over/under hand grip, might try the overhand grip only.
Chins (or pulldowns if you prefer)...curl grip..most affected exercise for hitting the lat's directly

3-4 set's of each. 7-10 reps. Back doesn't need a lot of set's, just heavy basic exercise to add impressive thickness and depth, and rather fast at that..Just train with serious intent.  Those 18 set's you have listed can be counterproductive and a waste of gym time. Good Luck.

I am gonna stick to this routine for the time being and really focus on barbell rows as I believe they are helping my back mass more than conventional deads...then I will do str8 legs for back and hammys on Sunday........I feel deads are a fantastic movement, however, more of a lower region exercise than for back...thoughts on this routine for pure mass?

lat pull wide 3 x failure
lowcable rows 3 x 6 to 10
underhand pulldowns 3 x 8 to 12
rack deads 4 x 4 to 6

Im scared of rack deads, you can go so much heavier and your pulling at weird spot when you start off. I'd rather end the workout with them.

I used to do them at the end of a workout but now I do them right at the beginning, when I've got more energy. Makes sense.

I prefer racks to full deadlifts though for isolating the lower back but doing them off the floor will build strength quicker and you'll increas you're pulling power more effectively.

More or less it takes the legs out of the equation which some like and some do not.  I would rather do cleans than rack deads but I have done them.

I do DL's after cardio, but keep it to 2 sets of 7, then I do my workout, then I finish up with 2 more sets with the most weight I can handle and well, it really gets me pumped.  To a point where I can barely walk.  I love it!

Idid this routine last night and it waas a dire struggle to finish.....strength is ok as I mustered 335lbx1, but the 6 reps sets killed me and I only could get four.....also did 2 sets insteads of the 4s.....double my bodywieght, now I jsut need to get my bench up but my shoulders are so weak....weird that I can ull 315-335 but only flat barbell 200 or so?  80lb dbells for 4, it's all in my shoulders as my chest is decently strong....
