It's like that book, "The Complete Book of Running". There was a sequel.
Nautilus is still in business and doing well. They also own bowflex, schwinn, universal, etc.Gary Jones (Art's son) started Hammer-Strength with Kim Wood, also very successful.(Now owned by Life Fitness, who also owns Cybex, SciFit, etc)
Nautilus is still in business. They make exercise bikes, elipticals, and treadmills. The same company also owns bowflex.Nautilus was the forerunner for just about every machine you see in the gym now, so I would hardly call them a failure. When it comes to inventions, you always give credit to the first even though everything that follow will be better. Look at how much innovation there's been in exercise equipment since the first Nautilus and look at how different the modern gym looks today.
A machine that seems to have gone out of fashion for some reason is the pec-deck - I hardly ever see anyone using them nowadays? Only injury I ever had (touch wood) was from one of those things hundreds of years ago - trying to use too much weight showing off like a prick and strained my rotator cuff - anyone on here still use them..?
I don't think I ever trained anywhere that had their equipment... and I'm a free weights sort of person I suppose. But I always thought that if you were going to design machines, then wherever possible, matching the resistance to the strength of the muscle through the range of the movement kinda made logical sense - cams, and all that. I always enjoy using a pullover with a decent cam design, for exampleA machine that seems to have gone out of fashion for some reason is the pec-deck - I hardly ever see anyone using them nowadays? There is logic in much of this regarding recovery.https://www.mike-mentzer.com/most-productive-routine/

Is Jim Fixx still dead?
Yup! But I think Mentzer faked his death.
He's alive and living in Dubai, India.Personal trainer to the Maharaja.
I completely lift by dumbbells now and feel a lot better than when I used the machines at Gold's.
Pec Decs have been replaced by this...
